Program Notes

March Caprice from Nulli Secundus James Curnow (b. 1943)

Nulli Secundus was commissioned by the Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association in 2012 to honor Dr. HarryBegian for his lifetime of dedication to instrumental music in Michigan schools, the United States, and throughout theworld. The Latin phrase Nulli Secundus (Second to None) describes to a “T” Dr. Harry Begian.

Dr. Begian loved marches and his love for them is why he was a great conductor/teacher of the march. “March Caprice”(free in form) is so designated because it is set in a fantasy variation form. It is a concert march and not in a traditionalquick-step form. All of the melodic content is based on motifs extracted from the Armenian folk song “Cilicia” (MyHomeland), and shaped to encourage the joy of march playing.

At Morning’s First Light David Gillingham (b. 1947)

David Gillingham’s At Morning’s First Light is a programmatic work that captures the serenity and beauty of daybreak. From the opening thin layers of sound, a broad, sweeping feel emerges, sprinkled with active lines depicting natureawakening.

Scootin’ on Hardrock David R. Holsinger (b. 1945)

About half a mile east of my office on Shady Grove Road, you will cross Hardrock Road, the former main street of ShadyGrove Township, Texas. Sitting close to the railroad line between Dallas and Ft. Worth, this little community thrived forits initial 20 years. But when the township was absorbed by Irving and Grand Prairie 30 years ago, Hardrock Road wasdestined to suffer dearly the abandonment of both a future and “county maintenance”. One doesn’t mosey downHardock Road anymore. You scoot along because now the only reason to drive through there is to go from somewhereyou’ve been to someplace you haven’t. But once upon a time, Hardrock Road was the center of town. D.R.H

Prelude, Siciliano, and Rondo Malcolm Arnold (1921-2006) arr. John Paynter

Originally composed for the standard British all-brass band and entitled Little Suite for Brass, Op. 80 this 1979arrangement by the late John P. Paynter brings its beautiful character and melodies to wind ensembles. All threemovements are written in short, clear five-part song forms, reflecting Malcolm Arnold's interest in folk songs and dances. The Prelude begins in a fanfare style and evolves through changing keys and themes; it slowly resolves into a quietcantabile ending. The Siciliano is true to the character of its lilting and graceful namesake Sicilian dance; solo instrumentscarry the melody as brass and woodwinds provide contrasting textures. True in style, the rollicking Rondo explodes withthe prominent theme that reappears again and again in alternation with contrasting themes.

The Vikings Andrew Boysen Jr. (b. 1968)

The Vikings was commissioned by Dan Chaston and the Viewmont (Bountiful, UT) High School Bands. When thecommission process began, the composer was asked to write a march that was not like a traditional march. Thecomposer immediately focused on the idea of writing a dark, angry march. The piece follows all of the traditional marchconcepts, including the standard form, key changes, and even a piccolo solo over the trio. In searching for a title, thecomposer discovered something fortuitous: the school nickname is the Vikings – a perfect title!
