A b o u t t h e F a c i l i t yEstádio Mineirão, a soccer stadium

located in the city of Belo Horizonte,Brazil, holds 58,170 fans. It was one of12 venues that hosted games duringthe 2014 FIFA World Cup. Soccer gameswill also take place there during the2016 Summer Olympics.

Estádio Mineirão opened in 1965and had a renovation to modernize thefacility completed in December 2012. Ithosted six 2014 World Cup matches,and is the home stadium for theBrazilian soccer team Cruzeiro. Thestadium held over 132,000 fans for amatch in 1997. However, capacity hasbeen decreased steadily due to safetyreasons.

Johnson Controls Brazil selectedSoundvision Engineering, an audio andvideo contract integrator in Brazil, todesign and install the sound system forEstádio Mineirão.

When Soundvision started theproject it faced significant challengesright away. The first issue was the sizeand scope of the control/monitoringsystem. The team designed a solutionconsisting of 16 racks with BSS AudioBLU-800 signal processors and Crownamplifiers. The loudspeakers are fedfrom five technical rooms throughCobraNet with D-link redundancy.

The team also needed loudspeakerscompliant with FIFA requirementsfor the World Cup that delivered well-defined coverage and high intelligibilityfor the massive crowds soon to fill thestadium. Since Belo Horizonte can see

Community’s R SERIES loudspeakersare the world’s standard for greatmusical sound quality with high voiceintelligibility in continuous outdoorexposure. R SERIES features high-power models like the R2s used inthese World Cup venues. Mid-powermodels like the R1, R.5 and R.35-3896are designed for arenas, gymnasiumsand distributed systems. Compactmodels like the R.25 and R.15 o erR SERIES performance for smallervenues and distributed usage. Five “RMAX” models are ideal for venues thatdemand uncompromised music andvoice quality at high output levels.Most R SERIES models are equippedwith versatile U-brackets and manyinclude 70V/100V transformers.

Soundvision ran EASE simulationsto evaluate several di erentloudspeaker systems during projectdevelopment. After thorough testing,they selected Community R2loudspeakers.

A configuration featuring twenty-four clusters, each with four or five R2loudspeakers, was chosen for theproject. To overcome one additionalchallenge, they created customizedbrackets to safely secure the clusters.

After completing the installation,Fernando Gargantini, SystemsManager for Soundvision, tested thesystem and made performanceanalysis measurements. The resultsshowed that it provides exceptionalcoverage, SPL, and intelligibility.

Two other stadiums used R SERIESloudspeakers during the World Cup inBrazil: Arena Corinthians in Sao Pauloand Arena Amazonia in Manaus.

Both stadiums opened in 2014,shortly before the World Cup startedin June.

Arena Corinthians, which hosted the first game of World Cup2014 between Brazil and Croatia, has 48 R2 loudspeakers. Based inSao Paolo, Arena Corinthians has seating capacity for 46,116 fans.However, temporary seating enabled it to hold over 63,000 duringthe World Cup. Since the 40,549-seat Arena Amazonia is located inthe Amazon rainforest, weather-resistance became even moreimportant when selecting loudspeakers. That sound system has 64R2 and 76 R.25 loudspeakers.
