PRIMARY INTENDED OUTCOME(s)The College of Pharmacy was the first health science college at the University of Arizona, and now has more than 65 years of history. Today the college is one of the premier pharmacy schools in the nation.

Within the College of Pharmacy, we are always searching for tools that support and strengthen communication with our students, graduates, and preceptors. A mobile app was a logical tool to support this strategy, in which we sought to:

1. Offer a mobile app at the program level to present pharmacy students, alumni, and preceptors with pharmacy-specific content, resources, and career services.

2. Increase audience engagement with our other communication channels, such as the College of Pharmacy website, social media, and monthly newsletter.

3. Continue to strengthen the College of Pharmacy’s image as an innovative program.

University of Arizona College of PharmacyUniversity of Arizona College of Pharmacy launches a mobile app to support students, alumni, and preceptors.

Our mobile app demonstrates that the College of Pharmacy is invested in the life-long success of our students and graduates as we continue to support them throughout their career.

CASE STUDY

THE CHALLENGEWe understand that an effective way to reach an ever-growing segment of our audience is through their mobile devices. With this in mind, we wanted to obtain a mobile app solution with the following criteria:

• Custom built for the College of Pharmacy, rather than the University as a whole.

• Affordable, and with no hidden costs.

• Low risk (if unsuccessful, limited resources would have been invested).

• Ability to operate on any device and in any OS environment.

• Simple to implement (no internal project management or IT Dept resources required).

• No effort to maintain (hands-off maintenance).

• A simple, password-protected control panel to manage app functions and analytics.

THE DECISIONIn 2015, the College of Pharmacy moved forward with a CareerTapp mobile app. A web-based mobile app was chosen (over a native mobile app) due to the flexibility and long-term benefits a web app offers.

CareerTapp was able to develop the mobile app within seven days, and with no resource requirements from our IT department. CareerTapp handled all buildout details including the design, layout, job integrations, CE integration, and calendar integration.

THE RESULTSQuantifiable analysis show that the app had been viewed more than 2,082 times within the first three months.

CASE STUDYThe mobile app provides the College with an intuitive communication tool for our students, alumni, and preceptors offering simple features/tabs: A “Jobs“ tab to present Arizona pharmacist job opportunities, an “Events” tab to promote seminars, meetings, and job fairs, a “Continuing Education” tab to promote professional development activities, and a “Resources“ tab to present informational buttons to relevant resources such as our website, resource logins (RXpreceptor, PubMed, ResiTrak, etc), social media, and LMS logins.

The features and content in our mobile app provide a perceived value of “convenience” that encourage students, preceptors, and graduates to load the app onto their mobile devices. As a result, the College of Pharmacy has added an additional communication channel, while providing our audience with highly focused and relevant content.

Supporting the preceptors that take our students is a priority for our experiential education department. We are now able to offer our preceptors a convenient communication tool to review continuing education opportunities and events, as well as convenient mobile access to our ELMS (experiential learning management system) software, CORE ELMS/RXpreceptor. Additional benefits stemmed from the ability to auto-import continuing education activities from our partners at the Arizona Pharmacists Association, providing another venue to stay connected with our audience.

THE CONCLUSIONAt the College of Pharmacy, life-long support of our students and graduates is important. The CareerTapp mobile app has provided our program with a significant tool to strengthen the communication between the College and our students, preceptors, and graduates. Our mobile app demonstrates that the College of Pharmacy is invested in the life-long success of our students and graduates as we continue to support them throughout their career.
