Archaeology & Cultural Heritage Environmental Impact Assessment Historic Building Survey Conservaon Area Consent Support BACKGROUND The Olympic infrastructure development at Osprey Quay, Portland Harbour, depended upon work undertaken by SLR’s Archaeology and Cultural Heritage Team. The site is located in close proximity to a Scheduled Monument, Portland Castle, one of Henry VIII’s coastal arllery forts, and has a long history as a Royal Naval Base and Air Staon. Significant historic structures from its military past were idenfied for retenon and have been incorporated into the sustainable design for the development. PROJECT OBJECTIVES The Portland Harbour regeneraon included a brownfield waterfront site acquired by SWRDA in 1999 for mixed-use development to create housing and employment for the marine sector. Planning permission was required for an HQ for the Royal Yachng Associaon, hotel, food store, residenal apartments and office space. SLR undertook the necessary work to obtain this planning permission. OUR ROLE SLR undertook the following works: Environmental Impact Assessment and a chapter for the Environmental Statement was produced for Cultural Heritage. Archaeological site invesgaon examined colluvial deposits overlying Mesolithic and later prehistoric land surfaces. Historic building survey was undertaken of Royal Naval Air Service structures standing at the site, including the iconic Canteen Building which forms part of the Underhill Conservaon Area. Conservaon Area Consent Supporng Statement was prepared to guide paral demolion and retenon of the Canteen Building as part of sustainable development.
