Managing the explosion of digital data The city of Illkirch-Graffenstaden is a French community located in the region of Alsace. To better serve its 28,000 citizens, the city is expanding its hotline service offerings. As part of this effort, the city plans to digitize most of the community’s important paper documents as well as improve its ability to manage, archive and store its ever increasing amount of data.

The department of information services of Illkirch-Graffenstaden is in charge of the entire information infrastructure which is distributed at three main locations: the town hall, event hall/media library and technical services. The infrastructure is connected via cable to approximately 20 locations, including schools, education facilities and off-site administrative services, as well as to 10 smaller sites and remote sites via ADSL.

Under the director of information services, Monsieur J. KALMBACH, a team of three employees manages approximately 500 workstations and all facilities which are tied to the information infrastructure in terms of network, archive, applications, data, backup, security and telephone for the deployment of web portals for citizen services.

Productivity increases with easy-to-use and simple-to-maintain solution“Our daily challenge consists of ensuring that the IT infrastructure operates with high efficiency. Our small team has to be multi-talented generalists and specialists at the same time. Because of this, we need to deploy products and solutions that are easy to operate and maintain,” said J. KALMBACH, director of information systems for the city of Illkirch-Graffenstaden.

The city’s IT department was particularly looking for a new backup solution to replace the aging SDLT autoloader, which was not able to handle the growing data volume any more. At this time, the backup volume totaled 1.4TB and is increasing by about 100GB to 200GB per year. The new solution needed to allow a fast restore of individual files if necessary.

At the recommendation of Bechtle, a European reseller, the city’s IT team evaluated backup solutions from Tandberg Data, a company that had previously supplied them with backup technology. After intensive tests of several products, The IT team chose the Tandberg Data RDX® QuikStation™, a network-attached removable disk array designed to provide a flexible platform for data protection and off-site disaster recovery.

The RDX QuikStation is based on RDX technology, a robust and easy-to-use backup technology that is offered by a large number of global system integrators and well known OEMs.

Fast and easy deployment

The IT team installed and set up the RDX QuikStation without any problems. The disk array was configured as 8 individual RDX drives. Connected to a Gbit Ethernet port and attached via iSCSI to a dedicated Windows 2003 server, the RDX QuikStation is operated by Windows NTBackup software.

The city’s data (mostly office files and images of virtual machines) are stored in the SAN (Storage Area Network) of the main data center and mirrored to a second SAN at a secure location by asynchronous replication. Thereafter, the data is backed up to the RDX QuikStation. Individual RDX media is removed and transported to an off-site location.

The IT team performs daily and weekly backups. Much of the data comes from the email application and certain critical databases like those used by the local police department. The backup window varies with the type of backup and the selection of data. Much of the data comes from the email application and certain critical databases like those used by the local police department.

Infrastructure environment

“We are totally satisfied with the new backup solution and with the consulting services of Bechtle. The installation was done without any problems. The RDX QuikStation is easy to configure, administer and use”

About RDX TechnologyThe RDX technology is an affordable and easy to use removable disk system for small and medium business, remote offices and workgroups. It combines the best of tape (removability, portability durability, and affordability) with the best of disk (high transfer rates, fast data access and reliability). The RDX cartridges are available with HDDs and SSDs from 64GB to 2TB. All RDX cartridges are fully compatible with all drive generations, and offer an archival life of at least 10 years. The RDX solutions include external and internal standalone drives and network attachable removable disk arrays with 8 RDX drives. The RDX systems are used for storage, backup and restore data archiving, cloud seeding and other applications.

The benefits of disk and tape in a single applianceAccording to M. Kalmbacch, the RDX QuikStation provides the following benefits:

• Faster restore of individual files in comparison to the previous tape autoloader

• Economic advantage of reading data with an individual RDX drive

• Fast performance just like physical disks

• Possibility to backup directly to removable media without loss of restore performance (previously, the team kept two days of backup on disk to compensate for slow tape speed)

• Simple management and administration (no cleaning necessary)

• High reliability / gained confidence of the IT team

• Simple and flexible user interface

• Full compatibility with all existing and future generations of RDX drives and media with with three years of advanced replacement service

Conclusion and upcoming projects“The RDX QuikStation from Tandberg Data has satisfied our expectations in all aspects. It is a versatile product which combines the advantages of disk and tape. Configured in hybrid mode (LTO Library plus RDX drives), we are able to easily modify the configuration and the capacity to meet our changing requirements. The restoration of files is very reliable and fast.

In fact, the RDX QuikStation has already helped. During an ISO certification, a user deleted important project files by accident. But thanks to the RDX QuikStation we restored all information in less than one hour,” M. Kalmbach said.

The next step for the IT department of Illkirch-Graffenstaden is to centralize and optimize the current procedures by purchasing a new backup software. A deduplication project is planned for later in 2014 and and the infrastructure and environment around the RDX QuikStation will continue to evolve.
