For years, the crimes that barred gamblers from Missouri

casinos read like Mafia movie plots.

Men with ties to Kansas City's notorious La Cosa Nostra

ran illegal betting rings, threatened witnesses andskimmed money from Las Vegas casinos, accordingto FBI testimony. And the state, seeking a Mob-freegambling industry, banned each from Missouri's

    riverboats.

In the last year, four Missourians were barred fromcasinos for crimes of "moral turpitude," bringing thelist to 17. Three were civil servants. Authorities saythey fed gambling habits with embezzled tax dollars.

for capital to gamble with. Also, a gambler who does notreceive treatment for pathological gambling when in hisor her desperation phase may contemplate suicide.

Compulsive gambling is often very detrimental topersonal relationships.

Abuse is also common in homes where pathologicalgambling is present.

Growing up in such a situation leads to improperemotional development and increased risk of fallingprey to problem gambling behavior.
