PRECURSOR DEL SEÑOR
La historia de la concepción y el nacimiento de Juan el Bautista es una historia muy humana. Sus
a n c i a n o s padres, sin h i j o s , conciben un hijo en su vejez, al igual que Abraham y S a r a concibieron a Isaac. ¡La
promesa del Dios de la salvación parece incluir el nacimiento tardío de niños extraordinarios! Juan fue, como dice el profeta Isaías, conocido por Dios desde sus primeros días, formado en el vientre de su madre Isabel, en secreto, pero antes de que nadie, excepto ella lo supiera. Era fuerte en el espíritu desde antes de su nacimiento, y creció hasta convertirse en el predicador y profeta más poderoso. Fue el precursor elegido del Señor; el profeta Elías que vuelve a anunciar la venida del Mesías y a preparar a la gente mediante el bautismo de arrepentimiento.
SAN JUAN BAUTISTA
Hoy recordamos a san Juan Bautista, primo de Jesucristo y precursor del Mesías. Juan se hizo famoso predicando la penitencia y bautizando con agua,
insistiendo que vendría uno que bautizaría al mundo con fuego y el Espíritu Santo. Hoy es uno de los santos mas festejados en el mundo, especialmente en zonas donde su fiesta coin-cidía con la llegada del verano. Para celebrar a este santo pariente de Jesús la gente en Alicante, España,
hace fogatas durante la noche de su vigilia y baila en torno a ellas. En América el pueblo Boliviano también recibe al santo con hogueras, para quemar la tierra en busca de fertilidad y purificación. Los Bolivianos también festejan echándose agua los unos a los otros. San Juan ha sido honrado en el hemisferio Americano desde 1509 cuando Juan Ponce de León nombró la Isla de Puerto Rico en su honor. También allí hacen el juego del agua en la fiesta de san Juan ya que los fieles se echan de espaldas al océano tres veces en busca de purificación y celebración.

El año pasado, el Papa Benedicto XVI nos dijo que “es necesario que todas las personas actúen animadas por el auténtico espíritu de paz, que siempre hay que implorar de nuevo en la oración y vivir en las relaciones cotidianas, en
cada ambiente”. La Colecta Peter’s Pence nos brinda la oportunidad de unirnos en solidaridad con el Santo Padre y con todos los fieles del mundo. El papa utiliza lo recaudado en la Colecta para socorrer y dar ayuda de emergencia a las personas más necesitadas alrededor del mundo. Hoy apoyamos al Santo Padre en sus labores caritativas. La Colecta Peter’s Pence se realizará hoy en todo el mundo para ayudar a las personas más necesitadas: a las víctimas de guerra, de opresión y de desastres naturales y a otras que necesitan ayuda de emergencia.
