The Mayo International Choral Festival Renowned Hungarian Adjudicator Gabriella Thész for May 2016 Choral Festival. The Mayo International Choral Festival (MICF) committee members are delighted with the addition of Gabriella Thész, Hungary, to their adjudication panel for 2016. Gabriella Thész is a graduate of the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest, Hungary. ?This policy of engaging adjudicators who are highly accomplished and renowned internationally is paramount to the ongoing success of the festival?, said Anne Marie Gibbons, MICF committee member. ?Having a top panel of adjudicators sends a positive message to choirs considering our festival, particularly the International choirs, who rely on the experience of the panel of adjudicators as an indication of the quality of the festival, and that the competitions during the festival will be run in a professional and fair manner?. Chairman Edward Horkan stated that ?this adds to what is already shaping up to be a fantastic festival for 2016, when we will celebrate our fifth birthday ? already since earlier this year we have received strong interest from choral groups from Norway, the USA, England, Wales and Russia ? having a top quality adjudication panel is vital to attracting choirs to participate in our festival. We look forward to an exciting year year and all events are open to a public audience? Gabriella Thész is a graduate of the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest, Hungary and has degrees in music education and choral conducting. From 1992 to 2012 she lectured in choral conducting at the Teacher?s Training Institute of the Franz Liszt Academy of Music, Budapest. For 27 years Gabriella was conductor of the Hungarian Radio Children?s Choir. She has made numerous CDs and
recordings for radio broadcast, and has toured both home and abroad including almost all countries of Europe, Japan, Taiwan, South Korea and the US. As the director of the Children?s Choir she
gave several premières of contemporary pieces and worked with many distinguished composers including Karlheinz
Stockhausen, Luciano Berio, Franco Donatoni, Niccoló Castiglioni and Philip Glass, and conductors such as
Paul Sacher, Jeffrey Tate, Semyon Bychkov, Georg Solti, Adam Fischer and Ivan Fischer. With her ensemble she has participated in several premiere European music festivals such as Salzburger Festspiele, Milano Musica, Wien Modern, Flemish Festival and Biennale of Venice. Gabriella is a regular guest professor, lecturer and adjudicator in Hungary and throughout Europe, the US, Japan, Australia and Canada. Other adjudicators secured for the panel include Orla Gargan, director of the Dublin Gospel Choir, Desmond Earley, a Lecturer in Performance at University College Dublin and Director of UCD Choral Scholars, and Blánaid Murphy, Director of the Palestrina Choir, Dublin Bach Singers, Carlow Choral Society and the Royal Irish Academy of Music Chorale. Entry to the Mayo International Choral Festival (for both competing and non-competing choirs) closes on December
31st 2015 for choirs from Ireland and January 31st 2016 for International choirs.

A great lettuce salad is the perfect complement to your dinner and you can grow fresh lettuce from those leaves you would normally throw away. Take those leftover leaves and put them in a bowl with about an inch of water. Over the course of about four days, mist these with water and once the roots start to grow, take these and plant them in the ground.
Celery is very easy to grow from kitchen scraps and all you need is the base of the celery bunch. Place a bit of warm water in a bowl and put the base in this. Make sure the bowl gets direct sunlight and after about a week once leaves start at the base, plant this in soil and wait for full growth.
Ginger is one the best fresh herbs to have on hand and it is easy to grow. Take a spare piece of the root and plant it in potting soil. After about a week, there is generally enough growth to use the ginger. Just keep repeating this to ensure a plentiful ginger supply.
Pineapples are not limited to tropical areas. Take the top and suspend it over a water-filled container in direct sunlight. You want to keep this as warm as possible and change the water daily so that it remains fresh and full. Once the roots take place after about a week, just plant this in soil.
Turnips are very easily to grow because you just put the tops in some water and after the green tops are visible and roots start, plant this outside. Any root vegetable can be grown this way, such as carrots, turnips, beets and parsnips.
Onions are simpleto grow and you can
grow any type both outdoors and indoors. Make sure you have a sunny area and take the root and plant it in potting soil. For green onions, just take the base with the roots on it and place it in some water and let it grow.
Recycle your plastic water bottles too!
Peppers are easy to grow because all you have to do is take the seeds and put them in potting soil. Unless the weather is very warm you want to make sure your peppers get plenty of sunlight. Peppers do not require much care and they grow quickly.

ISPCC ?Shield? Anti-Bullying Programme In 2014, more than 8,000 children contacted the Irish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (ISPCC) about bullying. This statistic shows that bullying remains an issue which concerns children and young people. In an effort to combat this, the ISPCC launched its ?Shield? Campaign in March 2012. The campaign supports parents, schools, clubs and
communities with the necessary tools to tackle the issue of bullying. At the ISPCC, we are aware of the impact bullying can have on a child?s world; it can lower their confidence and impact negatively on their self-esteem.The ISPCC?s Shield Campaign is centred on its ethos that children have a right to feel safe and be protected against all types of harm. Bullying can cause some of its victims devastating emotional and physical harm, some of which can have continuing adverse effects into adulthood.
We are encouraging club and school personnel to take responsibility for young people?s welfare and to self-evaluate how well they deal with the issue of bullying and also assess how they respond to the issue. The self-evaluation toolkit takes just two hours with follow- up support for staff in the weeks and months after, including tailored outreaches to young people, parents, and club members if requested. ?
Students and club members are also invited to play a role in raising awareness by taking a role in preventing bullying and empowering others to do the same. In 2014 as part of the ISPCC Shield Campaign we launched an exciting initiative for students: The Shield Youth Award, a prestigious competition open to Transition Year, CSPE and LCA students which finds them competing in an 'Apprentice Style' finale. Registrations for 2015/2016 are now being accepted and the final will take place in May 2016. Another element of the campaign is the ISPCC Shield Flag Award. This award scheme has been developed to publically recognise the efforts of schools and clubs who are taking a positive proactive approach to bullying and protecting children. Schools and Clubs that use the Shield Anti-Bullying toolkit and complete a list of criteria will receive an ISPCC Shield flag to display, showing their club?s and school?s commitment to stand up against bullying. Mayo Roscommon Hospice Foundation launched their new Christmas Charity Ball with An Taoiseach and his wife Fionnuala Kenny on hand to do the honours. The newly named Mistletoe Ball will take place on December 12th in Breaffy House Resort. "We are thrilled that An Taoiseach and Mrs Kenny agreed to launch the Mistletoe Ball by posing for some fun photos in Breaffy House recently", explains Laurita Blewitt Mayo Roscommon Hospice. The Mistletoe Ball (formally known as the ICE Ball) promises to be a festive night of entertainment, food, music and fabulous company and will be in aid of the Mayo Roscommon Hospice new Hospice/Palliative Care Unit in Castlebar with some surprises on the night too.

A Mayo 2040 Lecture will take place at G.M.I.T. on Thursday November 12th commencing at 2.30p.m.The afternoon lecture will feature a panel of 4 speakers talking on some aspect of science & Technology and their view on how it will impact in 25 years? time.This year we would like to pay tribute to Louis Brennan- a Castlebar native and inventor- who had a significant impact on the world of technology. Each talk will last 35 to 40 minutes with a discussion and Q & A session afterwards.Among the speakers will be Brían Hoban, Local Historian & Tour Guide, and a member of the Louis Brennan Memorial Committee who will speak on the life and work of Louis Brennan.

BUDGET 2016 - How it impacts parents and families. Here is a summary of some of the main Budget 2016 points with particular relevance to families:Tax & USC Entry point to the USC will rise from ?12,012 to ?13,000The three lower USC rates are to fall - the 1.5 per cent rate will be cut to 1 per cent, 3.5 per cent to 3 per cent, and the 7 per cent rate will fall to 5.5 per cent on income between ?18,688 and ?70,044.Threshold for family income supplement will be widened to allow more families avail of the weekly tax-free payment available to employees with children.Minimum wage to rise to ?9.15 per hour from 1st January next.Childcare package will include a second year of free pre-school care for every child aged between three and five.Child benefit will rise ?5 to ?140 from JanuaryTwo weeks paid paternity leave will be introduced.Free GP Care will be extended to all children under 12 (subject to negotiations)15 million allocated to fund children with disabilities in early childhood settings2,260 additional teaching posts to be provided in 2016, including 600 new resource teachers. Pupil teacher ratio will go from 28:1 to 27:1 at primary and from 19:1 to 18.7:1 at second level.

What an honour it is to be involved with you all. Goals from Captain Anna Tuohy, Belinda Patterson and an absolute beauty from Erina Flannery. Player of match was our centre back and youngest player Amy Dowling. We all know that Mel is driving us on.
Castlebar Ladies Rugby What started out as an experiment
just three years ago has seen rugby firmly established for ladies in Castlebar and indeed Mayo. Due to increased interest in the tag rugby league held in Castlebar the ladies felt they wanted more and soon
caught the rugby bug! The team was set up in September 2012, they headed into the unknown and they haven?t looked back! In that short space of time the ladies have become Connacht League Champions 2 years in a row in 2013 and 2014. The 2013 team consisted of a squad of 29, with just two players having played rugby before the team was set up. Startling as that may seem, and proving that maybe you can teach an old dog new tricks, it only highlights the fact that this team is still in the developing stages and are welcoming new players every week. The 2015 league has just commenced with Castlebar recording a win over Buccaneers. The girls are trained by experienced coaches and former Castlebar players Jason Keane and Christy Cusack. With the league in its very early stages, what better time to develop a new hobby, get fit and make friends? All beginners are more than welcome! CREDIT UNIONS VOTED NO. 1 IN CUSTOMER SERVICE CASTLEBAR CREDIT UNION COMMITTED TO MEMBERS IN THE LOCAL COMMUNITY The first ever survey of Irish brands based on the experiences of customers, shows that Credit Unions tops the poll. According to the Customer Experience Ireland Survey 2015 (CEXI), Ireland?s Credit Unions including Castlebar Credit Union, are one of the Customer Experience Champions, coming 1st in their ranking. This is extremely good news for credit unions at a time when demand for services is at an all-time high. At the height of the economic crisis, credit unions were the only financial services provider to significantly grow their membership ? a trend that continues to this day. Currently Castlebar Credit Union has 33,000 members. To this membership, Castlebar Credit Union has provided ?15.1 million in loans for everyday things during the past 12 months. The local, face to face service that continues to be provided by Castlebar Credit Union and indeed all credit unions all over the country is obviously valued highly by the Irish population.
