REPORTSPresident’sReport–byLesSmithJustwhenwethoughtthatthingswouldbelookingupwithCOVIDrestrictionseasing,alongcametherain!Wehavenowbeenaffectedonmorerun-daysthaninpreviousyearsandournumber of riders are well down with a subsequent drop in income and it is likely thatinsurancecostswillbehigherattheendoftheyear!Althoughour3rdSundayrunwasprettydamp,mostclientsseemedtothinkthat itwasgoodfun.Wehavenowprogrammedinanextrarun-dayfromWILSONonthe25thofthismonth.Speaking ofWILSONwe have recently changed our FaceBook entries to say KENT STREETWEIRastheother“entry”wasgivingreaderstheimpressionthatourtrainrideswerefree!Wearealsotryingtopromoteouroperationsasa“leisureactivity”andnotan“amusementpark”typeride.Weofferaveryrelaxingexperience!WemakenoapologyforouraccentonSAFETYandthisistheresponsibilityofallmembers,pleaseobservesuch.TheAALSdoeshavespecifiedrequirementsbuttheyalsomentionthatClubswillhavetheirownissuesinthatnotwoclubsarethesame.Itisourdutytorecognizepotentialsafetyissuesandthentotakecareofsuch.Acommentwasmadeabout“whydonootherclubshaveabrakeholdingtestonagradient?”andtheansweristhattheymaynothaveablindcurveapproachinga1:30gradientortheymaynothaveeventhoughtaboutit.Members should take a look at theworkdone in ourWorkshopon thenewdrive systemfittedtotheagingCometValeplusafewotherthings.ThisprojecthastestedJohnWatson’sthinkinganditmaynotbethelastofsuchasthisdrivemethodcanbefittedtooldCityofCanning.Vic Joneshasonemoregearbox that canbeused.Wewill increase the speedofCarabao to about 8km/hr as in its present state it is far too slow to respond to a threatrequiringthefiretrain.TheMikeCrean/BenJonesgangaregettingintosomecablingworkinadvanceofasignals/communications upgrade. Bernie has been giving the rear, or is it the front, of our steamshedaface-lift.KenhasorganisedsomepersonsdoingcommunitytypeservicetocomeandhelpwithgeneralmaintenanceonaWednesday.Pleasekeepupthegoodworkaroundtheclubandthehelpforoperatingtrainsasweareingoodshapefromtheseeffortseventhoughalittlewet.Secretary’sReport–byRobinGreeneyAs Les says above, our recent run-days have had to be either cancelled or held in ratherheavy rain. Our passengers just keep coming despite this and although numbers are welldownonpreviousyearstherehasbeenasteady,ifslow,flowpasttheticketoffice.Please spare a thought for train crews out in the rain… who arrive back in the stationdrenchedtotheskin-whichisneithergoodfortheirhealthortheirenthusiasm.Thoseofuswhoareluckyenoughtobeundercoverinthestationshouldn’tforgetthesacrificeourtraincrewsaremaking–wellexcept forthedriverofSumowho is inaveryprivilegedposition.Thethreepeoplecrewingthattraintookitinturnstositinthewarmcabinandinthe‘notsowarm’guardseat.

Speakingofsacrifices,wealltoofrequentlyoverlooktheexcellenteffortofourticketsellerswhousuallyhavetoworkthewholerunnotbenefitingfromrelief.Withoutaworkingticketoffice,wecan’tfunction…sopleasespareathoughtforthesepeoplewho,liketherestofus,needabreakfromtimetotime.Itwouldbemuchappreciatedifmemberscouldvolunteertoproviderelief…andifrequestedbytheDOsotodo…thenpleaseacceptgraciously. It isn’tthemostexciting jobontherailwaybut iscertainlyoneof themost important.Sharingoftasksmakesiteasierforallandletsmembersknowtheyareappreciated.WE,themembers,arethemostvaluableresourcetheClubhasandweneedtolookaftereachother.Also,toyetagain“bangon”aboutoneofmypetpeeves,wearestillgettingrelativelyfewmembersnotifyingme inadvanceofa run-dayof their intentiontoattend,but rather justrolling up on the day (around 50% notify in advance). All attendees are very muchappreciated,withorwithoutpriornotification,butadvancednoticemakesourplanningfortheeventjustthatmuchmoreeffectiveandstopsmepullingoutwhatlittlehairIhaveleft!The Committee have decided, due to the proximity to the last GeneralMeeting, that theGeneralMeetingthismonthhasbeenmovedtothe4thofSeptember–09:30atthecanteen.This is youropportunity tohearwhat is goingonat your cluband toaskquestionsof theCommittee - sowellworth attending. FEATUREARTICLEThismonthwepresentLukePrindiville.GettingtoknowyourfellowmembersGrowingupmyDadhadanextensiveHOlayoutinourgamesroombutwhenweweredoingrenovationstothehousehehadtopackitup,eventuallywhenthehousewasfinishedIwasallowedtohelpbuildanddesignanewlayoutandfromthenmyfriendsandIgottherailwaybug.Iwas10whenIfirstwasintroducedtoCMR,myfriend’sdadhadrecentlymovedtoWilsonsothefirsttimeIstayedathishousehetookmeacrosstheroadtoaplacethathehadjustrecentlydiscoverwherethetrainswereabitbiggerthanourHO’s!!Wehadsomuchfun;ImeetanotherpersonclosetoouragethatdaybythenameofJamesGiddensandanoldermembernamedMrBobBrown.MrBrowngotthethreeofustoworkonseveraldifferentprojectsandwewerealsojoinedbyCraigBelcherandtheMillmanbrothers.OneprojectthatIrememberverywellwasthedemolitionoftheCanningStationplatform,wehadtobreakupthesunkenconcreteandwethenloadeditupinwheelbarrowsandtookitovertoHonitoncuttingthuseffectivelycreatingamajorpartofthebank.AsarewardattheendofeachworkdaywewereabletorunMrBrown’sEarlyAmericanand/orCurly(renamedasPercylaterinitslife).AfterafewyearsmyfriendfromschoolstoppedcomingwithmetoCMRbutJames,CraigandIwereverygoodfriendsbythenandwereattheclubmostweekends,theonlytimeIwasnotthereontheweekendwasSaturdaymorningsinwinterduringthehockeyseasonbutwouldbedroppedoffafterthegame.JamesandIbothstartedhelpingSteveReeveswithhisengine‘Sarah’,nowthoseofyouthathaveseenpicturesofSarahwouldknowthatshehadamountainofbrassandeveryinchofthatenginewouldhavetosparklebeforetherunday,welearntsomuchfromSteveandweweregreatlyrewardedwithknowledgeanddrivingprivileges.WethenstartedbuildingapairofBlowfliesinSteve’sworkshop;alasIwasneverabletofinishtheBlowflyasitwentmissingfromitsstoragelocationwhenIwenttocollectit.IthenmeetthelovelyHeidiWatts,herdadhadhelpedAlbertWoodsbuildBritanniaandhermumColleenandMargaretWoodswerefriends,theywouldsitwithMaryMillmansmokeandtalk,haha,HeidiwouldplayontheswingandridethetrainswhileNoelandAlbertwouldruntheengine.Thenduringthe1993conventiononeHeidiWattsmadecontactagainandastheysaytherestishistoryonthatone.In1999wehadourfirstchildCallumandwithworkingandlifewedidn’thaveasmuchtimefortrains,afterwehadSarahin2001,in2003wemovedtoMelbournewherethebughitagainandwejoinedBoxhillMiniatureRailway,stillwithayoungfamilyIspentatleast1Saturdayamonthattheclubworkingonsignalsandothermaintenance.In2006wemovedbacktoPerthandrejoinedCMR,IpurchasedmyHeidiIIchassisandpartsfromgoodfriendCraigBelcher,itthentookagoodfew(almost10)yearstofinallyhaveShereeupandrunningjustaftermy40thbirthday,IamnowworkingonmyownNumber9whiledoingmaintenancetoSarah’sBeechinaandhelpingXandertobuildhisTinkerbell.

Ihavebeenonthecommitteeoftheclubnowforseveralyearsfirstasageneralmemberthenminutesecretary,thenVicePresident;therewasalsoashortcaretakerofPresidentaswell.IworkonthewebsiteandassistwhereandwhenIcanwithmaintenancearoundtheclubeitherwithlocos,trackorjustinfrastructureandfacilities.HopefullythatgivesyouabitofinsighttomyselfandfamilyaroundCMRandthehobbyingeneral.WagonUpdatefromLes

Our“rebuilt”Heritagewagonwithaguard’spositionhasbeennamedafteranex-memberandfurthermodifiedbyremovingthecanisterfromtheemergencyhornandthenmountingitonthecanopy.Thishasbeendoneasthepreviousoutsidepositionmadethevehicletoowideandthentohaveitinsideproducedproblemswithlegroom(wemayneedasmallpropunderthetrumpet!).
