formance. S·O·S Services are designed to identify

problems before they grow into major repairs.

Using sophisticated analytical technology

and our trained, experienced technicians,

S·O·S testing can determine if oils and coolants are doing their

job of protecting your equipment. As a result, performance

losses and major repairs can often be avoided.

S·O·S Oil Analysis

The S·O·S oil analysis tests have beendeveloped by Caterpillar engineers andchemists to evaluate the condition ofyour engines and machines, rather thanthe condition of the oil alone. Followingis a brief description of the standardtests offered in the S·O·S program.Additional tests, such as viscosity, TBNor TAN, may be performed, if needed.

Wear Rate Analysis monitors wear bydetecting, identifying and assessing theamount and type of wear metal elementsin the oil. The rate at which wear metalparticles increase from sample to sampleis as important as the quantity ofparticles in the oil. For this reason,regular sampling at specified intervals isnecessary to establish wear rate trendsfor each oil-lubricated compartment.The presence of silicon and otherelements which indicate dirt entry arealso monitored with Wear Rate Analysis.

Oil Cleanliness Analysis uses aParticle Count test for non-engine oil. Itdetects both metallic and non-metallicdebris (such as friction disc material)generated by wear, as well as dirt fromoutside sources. This information, alongwith Wear Rate Analysis, permits acomprehensive evaluation of yourhydraulic and power train systems.This combination can detect potentialfailures not identified by Wear RateAnalysis alone.

Oil Condition Analysis determinesloss of the oil’s lubricating properties.An infrared analysis instrument is usedto compare the properties of new oil to the properties of your used oilsample. This test allows our techniciansto determine the extent to which theoil has deteriorated during use and toverify that the oil is performing up tospecification during the entire oilchange period.

Detection of Fuel, Water and Glycol The presence of Fuel, Water or Glycolare indications of problems whichrequire immediate correction. Fueldilution reduces the oil’s viscosity anddestroys its lubricating properties. Someunburned fuel may enter the crankcasepast the piston rings, particularly if theengine is run at low idle for extendedperiods during cold weather. Fueldilution beyond 4% by volume, however,can lead to piston ring sticking andfailure of the engine bearings. Glycol(coolant) contamination causes rapidoxidation of the oil and will lead to amajor engine failure if not promptlyresolved. Water can contaminate an oilsystem by leaking in from the outside orby condensing within a hot oilcompartment or engine crankcase.Water will cause the oil to form asludge which can plug filters. Oilcontaminated with water passingbetween close fitting moving parts willcause “hot spots” leading to reducedcomponent life or rapid failure.Oil samples for these tests are generallytaken by the customer. However, yourCat dealer can do your sampling as partof a Customer Support Agreement.

S·O·S Coolant Analysis

Coolant or cooling system problemscontribute to more than 50% of allengine failures. These failures canbe due to inadequate cooling systemmaintenance, incorrect concentration,poor operational procedures such asextensive lugging or inadequate cool-down procedures, or system problemssuch as stray electrical current or blockheater failure. These problems willeventually affect the oil condition, andmay cause oil oxidation or antiwearadditive dropout. Cooling systemproblems will also reduce the life oftransmission and hydraulic componentsserved by coolant heat exchangers.S·O·S coolant analysis is a two-levelprogram that does more than justcheck the condition of your coolant.It determines the overall condition ofthe cooling system and can identifyproblems with maintenance proceduresand operational practices.

Level 1:Basic Coolant Maintenance Checkconsists of four analytical tests andfour observational parameters that not only show major problems with the coolant, but can also predict some major cooling system problems. Level 1 results can also determinewhen Level 2 analysis is needed.

Level 2:Comprehensive Cooling SystemAnalysis involves an extensivechemical evaluation of the coolant and its overall effects on the inside of your cooling system. This series of comprehensive tests can identifysubtle cooling system problems,determine probable causes, andhelp prioritize the urgency ofneeded corrections.

Resultsand recommendations are usually availablewithin 24 hours of receipt of sample.Each S·O·S sample is subjected to aseries of tests using advanced analysistechnology. Trained technicians thencompare and analyze test data. Theyreference engineering data and factoryservice publications, plus study machinehistory, maintenance and repair records.When needed, they contact factoryengineers or talk directly with the owner/operator or maintenance superintendent.In short, they do whatever it takes toget a clear picture of all the specificsregarding each piece of equipment.

Using Dealer StoreFront–through theInternet–it’s fast and easy to monitorthe effectiveness of your equipmentmaintenance program with nosoftware required. You’re notified bye-mail when new fluid samples areposted. With S·O·S Services Online,you can view sample information,perform searches, and access onlinehelp.

Other screens allow you to viewdetailed descriptions of your fluidsamples, search for samples byseveral criteria, and review samplehistories. Though S·O·S Onlineminimizes paper filing and storage,you still have the ability to create andprint graphs and reports.
