    Introduction

    2

By 2005, all tow ns with a population of more than 2000 people must be connected to a w astew ater system feeding into a w astew ater

    treatment plant.

The target s are both quant ita tive and qualita tive as they include the def inition of mandatory outcomes.

The first result must be the protection of the natural environment. This no longer means simply removing w astew ater far from private

residences for health reasons, it now means transferring this same wastewater to a treatment plant.

To guarantee the protection of w etland a reas, and more generally the environment itself, the sewers must transport the effluent,

without leakage or infiltration, from private residences through to the treatment plant, sometimes several kilometres away.Leaktightness of sewer mains actually helps protect treatment plants by preventing treatment lines from being overloaded with

parasitic infiltration w ater. It thus gua rantees proper operat ion of facilities over time.

The pipe system adopted must be leaktight.

The second req uirement expected o f capita l infrastructure is tha t it be long -lasting .

Long service life is an implicit choice fo r insta llations: the commonly expected lifespan fo r a w astew at er system is at least 50

yea rs. This mea ns tha t need s have t o be clea rly def ined, ie, infrastructure site a nd service conditions, a nd tha t there is no risk

of the system having to provide service outside its design capacity.

This also mea ns tha t the ma terials used must be ab le to w ithstand the pressures of t ime: optimising pub lic capital expenditurealso means avo iding premat ure renew al of faulty infrastructure.

The pipe system chosen must be durable.

Given their specifications, INTEGRAL pipes provide all the necessary guarantees for a leaktight and long-lasting system.

The choice of pipes upstream from the w aste w at er treat ment plants can b e one of t he det ermining facto rs in the length of

w astew at er structure's service life.

The na ture of the pipe system a nd cha nges in its behaviour must be ta ken into consideration w hen ca lculat ing the service life

for this type of eq uipment. It ma y be more or less prone t o a llow ing clear w ater infiltration, slow ing effluent flow or the

formation of H2S (wastewater retention zone, deformation, etc.).

SAINT-GOBAIN PAM provides the market with a complete range of pipes and fittings for all wastewater requirements, whatever the effluent source:

Strong and impermeable, they adapt to changes in theirenvironment w ithout breaking o r cracking a nd they exclude

all possibility of infiltration. Moreover, they are not open to

    THE INTEGRAL ANSWER

    THE INTEGRAL ANSWER

    I Material durability

The ductile iron used for INTEGRAL pipes benefits from the

same extraordinarily durable properties of cast iron.

Combining flexibility with strength, duct ile iron has remarkable

    bending and yield strength qualities.

Unbreakable, ductile iron overcomes the potential problems

from clean breaks or insidious cracks.

INTEGRAL pipes are able to w ithstand considerable mecha nical

stresses, site and operat ion hazards without any dama ge. They

can resist soil loadings, landslides, earth movements, wheel

    loadings, etc.

The external protective coating of galvanic zinc, covered with red epoxy paint, provides adequateprotection for the pipes in most types of soil.

The ca pacity o f a system t o fulfil its role over time

necessarily implies that future or exceptional service

conditions have been factored into the initial design

    calculations.

The sa fet y ma rgin provided by INTEGRAL pipes means the

system can handle an exceptional overload, without

    jeopa rdising its leaktightness.

INTEGRAL pipes can operate at high flow rates, up to theservice maximum, without networks having to be resized. They are able to withstand hydro-cleaning at highpressures without any deterioration: this feature facilitatesthe extraction of any foreign bodies.

    I Long service functions

Rigid and stra ight , INTEGRAL pipes, in 6 to 8 m leng ths,

guarantee continuity in the water stream.

The hyd raulic capacity o f INTEGRAL ductile iron pipes is

evidenced by the fact that the internal diameter is at leastequivalent t o the nominal diameter (ID = DN).

Junctions are few and self-centring, and so do no t

create any obstacles to the flow.

The ca st iron used for the INTEGRAL system is a d uctile, and

so elastic, material that provides above 10 percent elongation

    at rupture.

Although the stress placed on the system is never this great, it

does present a significant safety margin.

Underground pipes can, over time, be subjected to differential

soil compaction in unstable sites, for example, or to settlement

caused by water destabilising the trench bottom.

Because of their strength and elasticity, ductile iron pipesystems are able to absorb the inevitable stresses from the

surrounding area without breaking or dislodging.

Underground pipes are also subject to mechanical stresses

from the backfill (soil or permanent loadings) plus intermittent

    loadings (traffic or wheel loadings).

It is thus important to choose a pipe with a sufficient safety

coefficient to avoid problems such as breakage, cracking,

bending, or ovalisation that will lead to a breakdown in the

    water stream.

Elastomer is the ideal material for ductile iron pipe gaskets as

it provides the system with flexibility and an element of safety

w hen passing through uneven or unstable soils. For extensive

and uniform soil subsidence, the elastomer gasket makes the

pipeline behave like a flexible chain that absorbs the

    mechanical stresses.

This same property means it is not necessary to insta ll rocker

    pipes adjacent to manholes.

The rigidity of ductile iron guarantees that INTEGRALpipe systems are never deformed; they maintain theirlinearity and ensure water stream continuity at ail times.

What may appear to be a paradox is in fart a very interesting feature, because it is the combination of these characteristics that ensuresINTEGRAL pipe systems will not only last for many years but their leaktightness is preserved intact over time despite the many hazards(see page 9).

excellent mechanical properties ; the joint is the key pointin guaranteeing structure leaktightness, in both gravityand pressure systems.

INTEGRAL pipe junct ions (STANDARD or I.M.) are ma de by

simply inserting the spigot in the socket and exerting radial

pressure: the compression ratio can be as high as 30 to 40%.

The elastomers used withstand the most stringent tests for their

area of a pplicat ion. They a re selected on the ba sis of their ability

to maintain their mechanical and physicalchemical properties

I Mechanical safety: Savings attributable to the type of material

The properties of ductile iron provide INTEGRAL system with significant advantages in terms of installation: it is a verysturdy material making backfill and compaction operations, in particular, much simpler.

The pe rforma nce o f t he INTEG RAL system co mbined

w ith the relative indepe nden ce from insta llat ion

    conditions results in:

Insta lla tion saving s in most usual cases (simplified

    compaction, re-use of trench soil as backfill, etc.);

Inherent saf ety in the ca se of highly problemat ic

projects (insta llat ion in the w at er table, unsta ble soil,

shallow or deep insta llat ion depths, etc. ).

SAINT-GO BAIN PAM ha s integrat ed in the design of its

sturdy INTEGRAL systems, the need for a product providing

high available safety in order to offset, insofar as possible, site uncertainties and installation hazards.

There are three main types of installation:BASIC - STANDARD - CONTROLLED that can be defined as follows:

BASIC installation: flat trench bottom. Bed and pipe surround backfill with soil free of rocksand lightly compa cted (initial bedd ing angle of 60 ). This more or less corresponds to compa cted

installation in soil type 3 and extraction of the shoring after complete backfill.

STANDARD installation: trench bottom in sand, gravel, etc. Bed and pipe surround backfill freeof rocks and compa cted up to the pipe crow n (bedding a ngle of 90 ). This corresponds to

controlled compa ction installation in type 2 soil, a nd w ithdraw al of shoring by layers aft er

    compaction.

CONTROLLED installation: trench bottom in sand, gravel, etc. Bed and pipe surroundcompacted in successive symmetrical layers, then uniformly up to 0.10 m above the pipe crown

(bedding ang le 120'). This corresponds to controlled compaction installat ion in soil type 1 w ith

withdrawal of shoring by layers before compaction.

Cf. " Fascicule 70" for the definit ion of soils.

Rigid pipes concentrate the soil loadings

and thus require careful attention to the

bedding angle to avoid any risk of

fragile ruptures (in the event of trench

    bottom destabilisation, for example).

    Flexible, deformable pipes require solid

support along their haunches and thus

require careful backfilling in order to

limit ova lisat ion (w hich ot herw ise

reduces the useful section and may

    cause leaks at the joints).

INTEGRAL duct ile iron pipes a re semi-

rigid. The elasticity of the ma terial

    means installation conditions are less

strict, and so more economical. Better

than any other system, it is able to

w ithstand certa in inevita ble insta llat ion

    hazards without suffering any damage.

Pipes are subject to st resses in the environments in w hich t hey are laid, including soil and ba ckfill corrosiveness.

The g eneral corrosiveness indices are calculat ed using topog raphical and geo logical readings. These read ings can b e fine-tuned

There are tw o t ypes of a brasion:

Scratch w ear, limited if t he pipe w all is harder tha n t he

    particles;

Impact w ear, limited if the surface ma terial is elastic.

The ideal wo uld b e to have ma terial tha t is both very hard a nd

    very flexible.

High alumina cement mortar provides excellent resistance

under normal flow cond itions and can w ithsta nd high

exceptional flow rates, even temporary, without any d ama ge or

risk for the pipe's lifespan, such as reduced thickness or

    mechanical strength.

O ur technical-sales support and research teams ca n examine

any special cases, notably in mountainous regions.

Significant project savings can be ma de b y eliminating flow

control chambers and manhole ba ckdrops.

Systems transporting w astew ater a lso conta in foreign matt er; this is all the mo re true in the ca se of comb ined systems.

In gravity flow systems, site t opog raphy oft en results in high flow rates, so this foreign matt er can cause a brasion.

    INTEGRAL - the technical answers

    13

For wastewater pipelines, the main danger comes frominside. Tw o types of problems may a ffect t he pipe's lifespan:

the agg ressiveness of some types of effluent transported,

and septic fermentation as a result o f intense bacterial

    activity and/or poor ventilation.

Wastew at er systems a re liable to receive accidenta l

industrial effluents. Although accidental, such effluent still

changes the b alance and low pH in the effluent transported.

It is thus important to choose a pipe material and type of

joint that take into account such chemical hazards in order

to ensure the system's long-term operation. The scope o f a pplicat ion for the internal linings used w ith

INTEGRAL systems high a lumina cement mo rta r and

epoxy and the type of joints guarantee safe use, even for

    certain industrial applicat ions.

    Please consult us

High alumina cement mortar internal liningTests and practical experience ha ve show n tha t high

alumina cement mortars are able to withstand septic

fermentation a nd occasional a cid att acks (for more d etails,

please refer to the general document Canalisations

    INTEGRAL en font e ductil e pour l' assaini ssement 2006 .)

Epoxy used for fittingsAn epoxy resin film is deposited over entire parts by

dipping them in a f luidised be d. This provides chemica l

resistance at least identical to that of the pipes.

The a pplicat ion process gua rantees a regular lay er over

the entire surface of parts treated. (Average minimum

    thickness: 250 microns.)

Nitrile gasketIn contact w ith t he effluent, elastomer joint ga skets must be

ab le to w ithstand at ta cks by chemical products and the risks

associated with the presence of hydrocarbons and oils in

particular.A yellow marking indicates t o users that this is a Nitrile NBR

    non-food quality gasket.

Standard EN681.1 define the test methods and perfor-

mances to b e reached . The mixture selected by SG PAM is of

    WG type.

Some difficult wa stew at er system service conditions as well

as the transport of wa stew at er over great d istances can lead

to changes in effluent quality, such as septicity, production

of sulphides, and the release of H2S. Certain accidental

circumstances, such as high effluent temperatures and/or

high sulphate content, can have the same effect and be a

    source of serious problems:

    production of ba d odours

risk of intoxicat ion for service personnel

    structure corrosion

w astewa ter treatment plant ma lfunctions

While it is essential to optimise the design and operation of

systems to ensure the long-term viability of infrastructure

and protect plant, it is also important to choose a pipe

system that does not compound these phenomena.

Moreover, if such situations are expected or foreseen to

exist on a continuous basis, it is preferable to choose

INTEGRAL pipes w ith a " High Safety" polyuretha ne

    internal lining.

    See INTEGRAL PH1 range.

    Pressure systems I

Inter-district systems may include long pressure sections that follow irregular or the most direct routes. The topographical conditions may require the installation of pumping stations followed by sewer mains operating underpressure.

The operation o f sections under pressure req uires the use o f pipes with a high saf ety coefficient.

The high pressures found a nd t heir variation dema nd t he use of a qua lity ma terial able to w ithstand w at er-hammer and

neg at ive pressure. The pipes and joints must demo nstrate high mecha nical performance levels to a bsorb these stresses, and

    any accidental phenomena.

The experience acq uired by SAINT-GO BAIN PAM w ith pressure systems fo r w at er distribution ena bles us to gua rantee the

same performance levels for the INTEGRAL system, even a t service extremes, such as, high pressure, w at er-hammer, a nd

nega tive a nd b oosted pressures.

The use o f INTEGRAL pipes for pressure systems is admissible up to an a llow able operat ing pressure (PFA) of 6 b ar.

As there is some fear of the risk of sulphide formation in these sections, measures need to be taken at the outlet from the

pressure section when the eff luent returns to gra vity flow to reduce H2SO 4 acid attack:

    Either by a ppropriat e chemical treatment (ferrous sulpha tes - oxygena tion hydrogen peroxide);

O r by installing pipe sections that are not a ffected by acid att acks.

A complete range of fittings especially for these systems is available so all layouts are feasible. In order to provide a complete

system, SAINT-GO BAIN PAM a lso off ers gat e va lves, knife g at e va lves, and sew ag e a ir valves.
