Ride your own way. How beautiful an idea is that? To swing for
a wave and slingshot down the face with a surfboard under your
feet specifically built to respond in any which way YOU feel. Art
and performance and speed – always speed – one and the same but
completely on your own terms. This is the core philosophy of Hot
Buttered. This is the passion of HB founder Terry Fitzgerald. This is a
blue print for the future of surfing.
TF is a surfer of unparalleled energy, acumen, and audacity. His lines on
a wave say everything you need to know about him. Direct, driven and
entirely original. And! Don’t forget fun! For all he has brought to surfing
since creative purpose became his game in 1969, for TF this is all about
the joy. And there’s no separation from the ocean to the shaping bay.
Ideas translate from sea to foam because they work. It’s that simple. It’s
why TF has always, and continues to, look forward. The past may be a
mountain of achievements – some heralded, others that would quietly
blow your mind – but it’s not some legacy stick TF is hanging his hat on.
It’s merely his foundation reo for what’s to come…
That’s where Re_Evolution kicks in.
Re_Evolution is the celebration of a lifetime of surfing and shaping
experience with an eye to creating an intelligent and exceptional
surfing future. It is an idea to challenge your acceptance of mass
consumption, to question what you’re swallowing from the feeding
trough that’s delivered as modern surfing. It is the acceptance of
surfing as art with an emphasis on performance, originality and FUN!
It is a belief that at the heart of us all there is a desire to discover surfing
anew. And why the hell wouldn’t ya?
Every part of the Re_Evolution journey is layed bare here… from
the pencil sketch seedlings of an idea, through the entire process
of production to the completed product. It is the uncompromising
commitment to quality in all stages of its metamorphisis. In short… it’s
classic TF. - Vaughan Blakey

S U N S E T G U N R O U N D E D S W A L L O W W I N GDuring the ‘70’s it was hard to
find a more influential Australian
surfer/shaper in Hawaii than
Terry Fitzgerald. His Sunset
Guns introduced concaves,
spiral vees and wings in well-
documented sessions epito-
mising the style and speed that
was the short board revolution.
The Gun’s roots are in the first
6’10 ‘wing’ round-tail proto-type
and first Hot Buttered Flyer
launched at Narrabeen’s Carpark
Rights, then taken to the world stage
at Sunset, Makaha and Laniakea.
As the weapon of choice
for ‘Mr Body Torque’, the gun
version was pure speed with the
added ability to break lines after
long fades and bottom turns. All
created from perfect foil and
balance point.
SIZE GUIDE: 7’10 – 9’0
The very first winger, a 6’10”
round-tail flyer, was launched in
the summer of 1972. That board
provided the template for the
swallow version and solid power
carving beast of TF’s early quivers.
To that basic round-tail a
pinched wing in the rail was added
reflecting a stumpy kneeboard
with glass fins in the rails, ridden
by Bunker Spreckles in the Kauai
summer of 1971. Terry worked the
idea into foam, refining rails and
pushing overall foil forward for
projection.
The wing concept was intro-
duced through his quiver with the
round-tail converted to a swallow.
The single/double concave and
wing straightened plan shape are
all about speed and the truest of
single fin feel.

“SURFING IS ART....Hot Buttered Surfboard’s Rainbow models are
available in limited numbers from the hands
of Terry Fitzgerald and Martyn Worthington.
Each board is machined, hand-shaped,
uniquely airbrushed, and fully glossed and
polished to ensure strength and the highest
quality classical finish.
Each shape features the original “rainbow”
Hot Buttered Surfboards logo and Terry’s
customized fin technology. The models and
spray designs shown are evolved from those
originally conceived by Martyn since 1971.
All shapes and artwork are adaptable to
individual requirements in the true sense of
custom surfboards.
....ART IS SURFING.”

The benchmark performance
surfboard derived from early
work on wing pins and swallows
in Hawaii and at Narrabeen.
The DWSW developed into the
‘all-rounder’ that no HB rider dared
leave home without. Developed for
skating over fat / flat spots by
increasing planing area under the
backfoot with a second wing added
to the round swallow single wing.
Winning the Australian Titles in
1975 underlined the credentials
of the wing series which TF later
slotted into barrels from Burleigh
to Uluwatu (winning at the
Om-Bali Pro in1980) and Oahu.
The ‘modern’ version grooved
for KF’s at Jeffreys / Cape St.
Francis, with front foot concave
speed and classic back foot
“spiral” vee power carves.
SIZE GUIDE: 5’10 – 6’5
Derek Hynd’s extraordinary
addition to the twin fin design
stream differed dramatically to
MR’s deep V style. The TF shaped
DH concept features prominent
concaves through the fins, a
refined, thinner nose line (heralding
the no-nose era), and a stabilizer fin
(fore-shadowing the tri-fin).
Great for swooping arcs and snaps,
DH added 360º foam bounces and
even footstraps for more adventure.
TF’s influences were Bertleman
and Liddell, for DH, Smithy and
Ron Woodward. Derek’s brand of
aggressive pocket surfing took him
to No. 7 in the World – twice.

Natural progression from big
wave Sunset guns required shorter
boards for powerful, directional
performance. A tight pin tail took
round tail roll out of boards a foot
shorter, adding extra tail concave
kept them in the water, as pin- tail
wingers took on tube and high
speed lines at Honolua and Jeffreys
from 1974 on.
The classic Pin Wings were
developed at the peak of TF’s
surfing career during the mid-70’s.
Simon’s tri-fin revolution may have
put an end to the single fin at
Bells ’81, but, even that day is
remembered for some of Terry’s
most flamboyant surfing on a 7’5
version of one of these most perfect
vehicles.
SIZE GUIDE: 6’10 – 7’10
As radical stab creating an alter-
native to Simon’s Thruster and
MR’s twinnie revolutions, TF
added trailer fins to double wing
width and single fin drive placing
emphasis on speed skating and
lip-line flow.
Featuring classic single-to-double
concaves with fluted, heavily
pinched wings and a stubby swallow,
or, chopped square tail, a round nose
and mini side fins give the Drifta it’s
almost spaceship-like appearance,
all driven by a 7 ½” single fin with
trailers completing the re_evolution
to hotdog happiness.
Driftas hide uncompromising
design capable of extraordinary
down-the-line speed and carving
line breaks. Truly a board for
transitions, singles to tri-fins, speed
to modern performance surfing.
SIZE GUIDE: 5’6 – 6’4
Monster Driftas at 6’10 – 8’0
are cool too……
Aggressive performance surfing
requires complete faith, especially
taking the drop and deep in the
pocket. Rounded area pins provide
tight turn security allowing perfor-
mance creativity. With a thin tail and
straighter rocker curve, the pin allows
long arcs and power drives at size.
Bobby Owns rode Nick Carroll’s
6’8” pin at Bells in ’81, winning
the Trials and pushing Simon
riding his new fangled Thruster
on the day that changed surfing.
Kye found the original board built
in 1980 and took it back to Bells
and Johanna.

S L I N G S H O T T W I N D O U B L E W I N G P I NTF’s first experimental pintails had
one wing, these evolved into double
wingers. The refined variation
created performance flexibility for
extracting long and short turns on
the face, but, still be able to run
high and straight - something few
boards do even today.
Design features are pure Terry
Fitzgerald blending nose vee to flat
entry area into single then double
concaves in which the spiral vee
is accentuated by the second wing
flutes - perhaps the most typical of
TF’s design direction.
This variation on a theme came into
it’s own when put under pressure at
Jeffreys, Ulu, Narrabeen – in fact,
anytime it’s cracking.

For decades HB has looked to create surfboards
on which all surfers can experience the thrill of
riding a wave. Surfing is individual expression
with the scope of experience only limited by the
surfboard under your feet, and the waves you ride.
The 2015 HB Models are the re_evolution of
research and development for perfect surfboards.
Design and testing are elements to which
materials choice and construction are added.
All Model files are designed by founding HB
craftsman Brandon MacDonald. BM has been at
the forefront of surfboard production, shaping,
blank development and computer designing for
more than forty years. All files are continually
tested and refined based on feedback by HB
surfer’s custom Models ridden at one of surfing’s
toughest arenas, North Narrabeen.
Only Bennett blanks are used in HB Model PU
construction, these blanks are exported from
Australia to our dedicated factory in China. HB
uses only the best imported raw materials and is
continually researching best practice production
techniques in both polyester and epoxy
construction.
The result is quality, performance and choice.

Designed for young surfers to push limits on a super
responsive board featuring low volume rails and a
turbo boosting single concave to v-double concave.
Less rocker in the nose and more through the tail, a
sweet combo for face carves and tight pocket jams on
any beach or point break. Now being surfed and tested
by HB’s team of U’15s at Narrabeen and Jeffreys Bay
HB’s core performance board designed with more
powerful surfers in mind. Carbon patches ensure
strength under the back foot when taking this board
through turns. Bottom contours feature single to double
concaves and accentuated tail curve in plan shape and
rocker. The S-Projekt is a 5 Year plan come to fruition
- built for surfing when power and precision count.
Key features are slightly thicker foil forward and fuller
entry under the front foot. The tail is refined into a
hi-performance rounded pin tail with five fin set-up.
The single to double concave maximises responsiveness
combining entry glide and trim with four fin power lines,
or tri fin thrust. Tested at Ulu and Sanur, and towed in at
Car Park Rights, this board is not scared.

Egg Area Pin Wing: Single fin surfing is personified in
the art of riding the wave, smooth lines, positive wide
based single fin power and carving wing based snaps.
The Magic Egg is based on boards Steve Wilson rode
into the top 16 during the 80’s, a traditional area pin
with square wing, concave to vee and tucked rails.
Created to feel the freedom of single fin power.

This is HB’s long serving proven Model incorporating
a now refined full nose which provides entry speed
and stability, combined with a performance tail for
aggressive surfing in the pocket. The single to double
concave adds to high performance and all-round
versatility. A wicked addition to any quiver. Extra tail
area houses a five fin set-up for tri or quad surfing.
Eve was born a conceptual single fin combining
traditional diamond tail punch and 21st century
bottom curve. A straighter rail to the tail with
single fin drive, a wider nose and thickness
distributed forward creates volume under the
upper body when paddling, helping wave
catching and a traditional approach to trim lines
and long arcs. Trailer fins are added for high
lines – just like Hanalei Bay circa ‘71.
TF on a H-Bomb! The NN boys did not believe it,
but, they did when they saw this Model flying down
the line. Flat rocker, forward wide point, parallel rails
through to the tail, plenty of drive for the deadest of
sections, with smooth V flow and round tail, rail to
rail speed generates amazing maneuverability. Extra
tail area allows five fin set-up, tri and quad sessions.
A tighter tail behind width in the nose area and
centre section, the new, refined Sun Fish thrives on
hollow, punchier mid-size waves. By incorporating
a curved hip and narrower swallow there is plenty
of stability without losing planing or turning power.
Entry is fast and flat spots no problem when weight
is shifted forward while the back foot provides
direction changes and power turns.
Is the most user-friendly Model with a softer rail line
providing forgiving rail to rail transitions. The wider
plan shape and single concave to the nose provide
entry speed and stability with the area pin and Vee
maintaining smooth consistent direction changes out
on the flat, or, in the pocket. A great board for surfers
that really want to improve their surfing.
Designed to rejuvenate your surfing. Bored with a
hybrid? Not getting enjoyment from your shortboard?
The key is catching and making waves. Let the
Monster Fish do the work with a wide planshape and
nose-entry allowing wave catching momentum. Large
board measurements in the mid-section, a light single
to Vee/double concave for maneuverability based on
volume and the added life of a tight swallow tail.

Two models exemplify Layne’s contribution to surfing. The Performance Fish incorporates a progressive plan shaped nose providing entry speed, a foundation in modern surfing. The swallow-
tail design is combined with single to double concave throughout the bottom for precision surfing in the pocket, responsiveness and all round versatility.
Layne’s Fun Board has rocker distributed throughout the board’s length accommodating surfers beginning the wave riding experience, as well as those looking to increase their wave count in the water by providing momentum and the stability needed
to catch, and surf waves easily. The nose and planning area are designed to increase entry speed and stability under the upper body and front foot. The tail is a flowing round tail combined with Vee to enhance rail to rail maneuverability and maximise enjoyment
HB’s Funboard is exactly that, deter-
mined by rocker distributed consistently
throughout the board providing momentum
and stability needed to catch and ride
waves easily fitting into any point or beach
break. The rails are softened through
the nose leading into the a slight single
concave. The flowing round tail and Vee
enhance rail-to-rail maneuverability and
maximize fun!

An integral part of the surfing experience is sliding concrete. From those first roller skate
wheels nailed onto a piece of 4 x 1 and a ride down the driveway, Terry Fitz has kept a
weather eye on skateboarding.
Through the skate explosion of the ‘70’s and ‘80’s the same lines laid in Dogtown pools
were morphed at Velzyland and Alley Rights. The Zephyr Boys, Jay, Alva, Stacey, CR were
watching Bertlemen, Liddell and TF and vice versa, all carving very different lip lines.
In the mid ‘80’s, Paul Burnett and his Dad designed, patented and built a vertical pin truck
for the first Hot Buttered Skateboards. Through the last five years, Kye Fitz’s Raised by
Wolves skate experience combined the art of HB’s rainbow surfboards with Canadian
maple and new age technology producing the HB Streetfighter, Shooter and Longboard
range of skateboards.
Now the original HB ‘OZE’ skatie featuring the original artwork and re-cast ‘vertical pin’
truck are back in production for summer 2014 / 2015.

The Drifta series snap performance relied not only on Wings, but, also trailers fins under the backfoot. These Drifta sets come as glass-on or tabbed sets to match TF’s singles of your choice.
T F S I N G L E S
Developed to ensure maximum drive off the bottom and pivotal snaps since the early ‘70’s. Essentially unchanged since Wayne Lyndon and Darryl Holmes began laying up 32 layers of fibreglass at the original HB factory, TF’s wide based singles are built to provide the security we all need to lean on.
Available in 7 ½”, 8” and 8” Wide sizesColours: White, White with colour strip and Tinted.

Yes, TF did venture down the tri-fin highway for a time, and in typical style created mini-versions of his wide-based single fins to power his three fins. Unchanged since the ‘80’s but still the source of lightweight strength and power and pivotal snaps. One colour and one construction only: Charcoal Hexalite Honeycomb.
H B T R I - F I N S E T S
Available in 115mm and 120mm sizes in Tinted Resin, or, Honeycomb core. Designed by Brandon MacDonald to maximise non-flex drive for custom and HB’s Models. Colours: Clear, Blue, Charcoal.
