I N T RO D U C T I O N

A l’instar du paradoxe du comédien, Maurice Calka pourrait incarner

le paradoxe du sculpteur. Cette personnalité remarquable, bardée de

commandes et de titres oficiels, unanimement reconnue comme l’un des

maîtres de sa discipline, n’a longtemps dû sa notoriété auprès d’un large

public que pour une pièce unique. Il s’agit de l’étonnant bureau Boomerang

en plastique de 1969, véritable morceau d’anthologie d’une modernité fière

d’elle-même, devenue l’une des pièces maîtresses des années pop.

Le relatif oubli dans lequel était tombé Maurice Calka, qui n’est autre que

celui d’une génération de sculpteurs, est aujourd’hui en voie d’être réparé.

Des rétrospectives, des expositions, des monographies rappellent à bon droit

l’abondance et la diversité d’œuvres plastiques, qui sans cesser d’être de leur

temps, échappent à toute catégorisation précise, à toute linéarité formelle,

peut-être parce que leurs auteurs ne travaillaient ni pour les galeries, ni pour

les critiques d’art, mais bien pour la cité et l’embellissement des lieux publics.

Et plus encore pour établir un lien fusionnel entre l’individu et la société.

Maurice Calka est représentatif de ce mouvement et le regain d’intérêt qu’il

suscite renvoie d’abord à une personnalité d’exception. Élève à l’École des

Beaux-arts de Lille, le jeune Calka a été, à l’âge de dix-sept ans, remarqué par

Robert Mallet-Stevens qui lui a passé sa première commande. Faut-il rappeler

que natif de Pologne, il n’a pas marchandé sa reconnaissance à sa patrie

d’adoption en rejoignant dès 1942 les Forces Françaises libres en Afrique du

Nord.

Démobilisé en 1945, Calka rejoignit modestement sa classe de sculpture aux

Beaux-arts de Paris, où il eut pour professeur l’excellent Alfred Janniot.

Cinq ans plus tard, c’est le Premier Grand Prix de Rome, qui lui ouvre un

séjour à la villa Médicis, alors dirigée par le compositeur jacques Ibert, dont

il réalisé le portrait. Ce séjour va lui permettre de perfectionner son art, de

nouer de solides amitiés, dans le domaine de l’architecture notamment,

et d’ouvrir sa curiosité aux subtilités de l’urbanisme. Rome est à cet égard une

vivifiante école de syncrétisme de tous les arts et d’aménagement spatial.

La fin de son séjour romain coïncide avec une importante commande

émanant du Négus Hailé Sélassié : un lion de Juda de 12 mètres de haut pour

la place du théâtre d‘Addis–Abeba, sans compter quelques pièces annexes.

Inaugurée en 1955, cette sculpture gigantesque s’est rapidement imposée

comme un symbole national, échappant de ce fait au vandalisme de la

dictature marxiste qui mit fin au règne du Roi des rois. En tout état de cause,

elle a amplement contribué à lancer la carrière de son auteur.

L’activité de Maurice Calka est dès lors prioritairement vouée à la sculpture

monumentale, liée à des projets architecturaux commandités par l’Etat, les

collectivités locales ou les entreprises privées. Il est de ce fait un heureux

bénéficiaire du 1% patronal créé en 1953 en vue de promouvoir les arts

décoratifs dans la construction. Mais qu’il s’agisse de commandes de prestige

ou d’humbles collèges et églises de province, il s’attache à intégrer l’œuvre

d’art dans son contexte architectural et urbain.

Celle-ci perd de son caractère ornemental pour s’inscrire comme une

composante structurelle de l’ensemble. Cette volonté de « synthèse des arts »

trouve son épanouissement aussi bien dans une redéfinition de la place

de la sculpture dans l’édifice, que dans des compositions monumentales

polychromes en grés émaillé auxquelles il associe étroitement sa

collaboratrice, l’artiste plasticienne Katherine Lavocat. Son activité pour

autant ne se limite pas à cette fonction d’accompagnement, réalisant sous

sa seule signature diverses opérations d’architecture et d’aménagement

intérieur, dans l’île de la Réunion, à Orléans et à Poitiers notamment.

Attentif aux mutations et aux engouements de son temps, Maurice Calka se

tourne à la fin des années 60 vers le design. La société Alpha International,

future éditrice des meubles de Pierre Paulin pour l’Elysée, lui commande

un fauteuil monocoque. La célèbre maison de décoration Leleu-Deshayes

lui commande là son tour un bureau en plastique Boomerang, ainsi qu’une

version plus élaborée et d’un standing plus élevé le PDG. Il dessine également

une version décapotable de la Renault 5, avec l’idée d ‘associer son ami Jean

Bouquet, directeur de Cacharel, pour les tissus. Une idée malheureusement

rejetée par la Régie malgré l’excellent accueil du public pour cette Cacharelle

lors du Salon de l’auto de 1976.

Mais sa grande passion reste la sculpture qu’il enseigne à la faveur d’un

long professorat, chaleureux et exigeant, à l’Ecole des Beaux-arts de Paris.

Considéré comme un excellent pédagogue, il avait des idées très afirmées

et novatrices sur l’enseignement artistique en général. Cet homme sensible,

passionné et sincère, accordait tout particulièrement une grande importance

à la maîtrise du dessin qu’il considérait comme un véritable apprentissage du

regard et le moyen pour l’artiste d’accéder à la vérité de sa création.

Son atelier de la rue Rafet, véritable caverne d’Ali Baba où il entassait

sculptures et maquettes, mais aussi dessins, peintures, études d’architecture

ou de mobilier, et cela dans un joyeux désordre, était aussi un lieu

convivial où se réunissaient élèves, artistes et amis dans une totale liberté

d’expression. C’est également dans ce lieu que l’on prend conscience d’un

travail abondant, polymorphe qui tout en s’inscrivant dans une certaine

tradition, frappe par la hardiesse des moyens techniques mis en œuvre,

par la vigueur tout en subtilité des volumes et la sincérité de l’expression.

Just as actors live a paradox, so Maurice Calka might be described as living

the paradox of the sculptor. This remarkable personality, lauded through

commissions and oficial recognition, and recognised as a master within his

discipline, has been known to the broader public through one single piece

– the surprising ‘Boomerang’ plastic desk of 1969, the perfect emblem of a

self-conscious modernity and one of the most representative pieces of ‘les

années pop’.

The relative obscurity into which Maurice Calka‘s name has fallen – the fate of

a generation of sculptors – is today being redressed. A series of retrospectives,

exhibitions, and monographs remind us of the wealth and diversity of

his sculptural work, which, while always evocative of its era, nonetheless

escapes precise categorisation and avoids being tied to any linear history.

This can perhaps be ascribed to the author’s working not for galleries or for

art critics, but for the city itself, with a view to the enhancement of public

spaces – the objective being a real bond between the individual and his social

environment.

Calka, a student at the Ecole des Beaux Arts of Lille, attracted the attention

of Robert Mallet-Stevens, who gave him his first commission. Demobilised in

1945, Calka quietly resumed his sculpture classes at the Beaux Arts in Paris,

where he was taught by the notable Alfred Janniot. Five years later, he won

the Premier Grand Prix de Rome, which earned him a sojourn at the Villa

Medici, then under the direction of composer Jacques Ibert, whose portrait he

made. This stay allowed him to refine his art and to establish firm friendships,

notably among architects, who opened his eyes to the subtleties of urban

planning. Towards the end of his time in Rome, he received a significant

commission from Negus Haile Selassie – for a lion of Judea, twelve metres

high, destined for the forecourt of the Addis Ababa theatre, and for a number

of ancillary pieces. Unveiled in 1955, this huge sculpture very quickly acquired

the status of a national symbol.

From that point, Maurice Calka’s activity was principally devoted to

monumental sculpture, with state commissions for architectural projects, and

commissions for local communities or for private corporations. In this regard,

he was able to benefit from the 1% subsidy granted in 1953 for the promotion

of the decorative arts within building projects. Whether it was for the most

prestigious of commissions, or for regional colleges or churches, he made it

his task to integrate the work of art into its architectural and urban context.

As a consequence, his works lost any purely ornamental character, and made

their mark as integral elements within the overarching concepts. This desire

for a synthesis of the arts found its expression both in his redefinition of

the role of sculpture in relation to architecture and within his monumental

compositions in polychrome glazed stoneware, in which he closely involved

his collaborator, the artist Katherine Layocat. His activity was not limited

to this kind of association, for he executed under his own name a range of

interior architectural and furnishing projects, notably on the Ile de la Réunion,

in Orléans, and in Poitiers. Sensitive to the shifting tastes of his era, Maurice

Calka turned his attention to the field of design at the end of the sixties. Alpha

International, the company that was to execute Pierre Paulin’s furniture

designs for the Elysée, commissioned him to create a capsule armchair; the

notable firm of decorators Leleu-Deshaies in turn commissioned the plastic

‘Boomerang’ desk and its more elaborate and prestigious variant, the ‘PDG’.

He also designed a drop-hood version of the Renault 5, planning to involve

his friend Jean Bousquet, director of Cacharel, in the creation of the related

fabrics.

The idea was unfortunately rejected by La Régie, despite the excellent public

reaction to this ‘Cacharelle’ at the 1976 Salon de l’Auto.

But sculpture remained his great passion. He became an engaging and

demanding teacher whilst working towards his professorship at the Ecole

des Beaux Arts in Paris. Regarded as an excellent teacher, he had very firm

and innovative ideas about art education in general. This sensitive, passionate

and sincere man placed particular importance on the mastery of drawing,

regarding this skill as the fundamental apprenticeship in looking, and the

means by which an artist could reach the essence of his idea.

His atelier in the Rue Rafet was an Ali-Baba’s cave, piled high with sculpture

and maquettes, with drawings, paintings and architectural or furniture

projects, all in delightful disorder; it was also a convivial environment in which

his students, fellow artists and friends could gather and express themselves

in absolute freedom. This was where one could identify the wealth and range

of his activity, which, while reflecting a certain tradition, struck one by the

robust techniques that underpinned his work and by the subtlety, vigour and

integrity of the forms through which he expressed his vision.

Dans les années 60, sous l’impulsion de son maire Jacques Duhamel, la ville de Dôle connait une expansion considérable. Un concours d’architecte est lancé en 1960 pour la construction d’un ensemble paroissial sur le thème de St-Jean. En 1964, l’architecte Anton Korady conçoit en béton l’église Saint-Jean l’Evangéliste et Maurice Calka orne les vitraux translucides de grilles en fer forgé illustrant la révélation faite à Saint-Jean par le Saint-Esprit : le combat de la lumière et de l’ombre

L’église de Dôle est classée au Patrimoine du XXe siècle

In the 60s, the city of Dôle - spearheaded by its mayor

Jacques Duhamel - experienced a significant expansion.

An architectural competition was launched in 1960 for the

construction of a parish complex on the theme of Saint

John. In 1964, the architect Anton Korady erected the

church ‘Saint Jean l’Evangéliste’ in concrete and Maurice

Calka decorated the translucent stained-glass windows

with wrought iron gates depicting Saint John receiving his

revelation from the Holy Spirit: the struggle between light

and shadow

The Dôle church in France is listed as a 20th Century

Heritage Site
