Catalytic Reduction of Nitrite 2
1. Introduction
The uptake of toxic nitrite ions by humans leads to the partial inhibitions of the oxygen
transport in the blood and to the formation of cancerogenic N-nitroso compounds. As today
the ground water becomes increasingly polluted with nitrite and the similarly dangerous
nitrate, a cost efficient process for the complete removal of the pollutants for the cleaning of
drinking water is needed. According to the state-of-the art process, the ground water is
purified using biological methods (digestion tanks, German: “Faulturm”) [1]. Alternatives are
physical-chemical methods (reverse osmosis, ion exchange) or the catalytic reduction of
nitrite and nitrate with hydrogen. Analogous to the catalytic nitrate reduction, the reduction of
nitrite over a palladium-loaded -alumina catalyst shall be studied. The reduction proceeds
according to the following reaction equation:
22
/
22 2232 32 NOHOHHNOOAlPd
(1.1)
Compared to other catalysts, the advantages are the high activity and selectivity of the
unpromoted catalyst under conditions typically observed in ground water (pH=6 and T=
283,15 K) [1,2]. The side reaction towards ammonium ions that is observed during nitrate
reduction hardly occurs and can thus be neglected.
A problem occurring in three-phase reactions such as the reduction of nitrite with hydrogen
using a palladium-alumina catalyst is the limitation of the reaction rate by pore diffusion.
Over larger catalyst grains, diffusion processes into the pores of the catalyst limit the reaction
rate and slow it down. However, larger catalysts grains are easier to handle, so the study of
the influence of mass transport on the reaction rate as a function of the catalyst grain size is
very important.
2. Tasks
The reduction of nitrite is to be performed with catalysts grains of an average diameter of 55,5
μm, 98 μm, 142,5 μm, and grains with a diameter smaller than 25 μm. The reaction rate is to
be determined by keeping the pH-value constant by adding hydrochloric acid (0.1 mol/l) and
monitoring the acid consumption. From the reaction rate, the reaction rate constant and the
Catalytic Reduction of Nitrite 3
parameters describing pore diffusion limitation, the Thiele modulus and the internal
effectiveness factor (see Chapter 3), are to be determined. The experimental values are to be
compared with theoretical predictions.
3. Theoretical Background
3.1 Mass transport in heterogeneous catalysis
In general, seven steps are assumed to occur in a heterogeneously catalyzed reaction [3]:
1. Transport of reactants into the boundary layer around the catalyst grain
2. Diffusion through this layer to the inner and outer surface of the grain
3. Adsorption on the catalyst surface
4. Reaction on the catalyst surface
5. Desorption from the surface
6. Diffusion of the products and unused reactants from the surface to the boundary layer
7. Transport from the boundary layer to the liquid bulk
Figure 3.1.1 shows a model of a porous catalyst grain.
Figure 3.1.1: Scheme of a porous catalyst grain.
The rate of the slowest step determines the rate of the overall reaction. It is assumed that a
major fraction of the reaction takes places at the inner surface of the catalyst grain, which is,
in the pores. In case of large catalyst grains, the way inside the pores is so long, that the
molecules cannot diffuse into the pores fast enough (Step 2). So, the reaction proceeds faster
Catalytic Reduction of Nitrite 4
than the diffusion, and diffusion becomes the rate-determining step of the reaction. Figure
3.1.2 visualizes this process.
Figure 3.1.2: Concentration as a function of the depth inside the catalyst grain.
Due to the slow rate of the diffusion the concentration of the reactants inside the catalyst pore
decreases compared to the boundary layer. So, the rate of the reaction in step 4 decreases as
well.
Two types of diffusion have to be considered, namely molecular and Knudsen diffusion. As in
liquids the mean free paths are considerably smaller than the diameter of the catalyst pores,
Knudsen diffusion can be neglected. The molecular diffusion depends on the effective
diffusion coefficient effD , that can be calculated as follows:
DDeff , with:
D : molecular diffusion coefficient
: porosity of the catalyst
: tortuosity (3.1.1)

equation 3.2.1 can be simplified to:

The above mentioned conditions are valid during the experiment. Simplified, the reduction of
nitrite can be considered as a first order reaction. The validity of this simplification will be
demonstrated by the processing of the data from the experiment (Chapter 6). According to
equation 1.1 and equation 3.2.2 considering the simplification, it is:

When the concentration of the hydroxide ions at a certain moment of time is known, the
concentration of nitrite ions at this time can be determined. From the change of hydroxide
ions with time, the reaction rate constant k can be determined as well.
3.3 Ratio of Reaction to Diffusion
The dimensionless number 0 , the Thiele modulus, describes the ratio of the reaction rate to
the diffusion. In general, the Thiele modulus is calculated according to [4]:

For the reduction of nitrite, it is obtained:

When the reaction is limited by pore diffusion, it does not proceed with the maximum
achievable reaction rate maxr . In order to determine the effective reaction rate effr , the mass
balance for a spherical catalyst grain is used. For an irreversible reaction of first order
kinetics, it is:

In case of a constant concentration 0][A within the whole catalyst grain the maximal reaction
rate can be measured. In this case the reaction is not limited by pore diffusion and thus in a

spherical particle the reaction rate can be calculated according to the following equation:

The ratio between the effective and the maximal reaction rate is designated as internal
effectiveness factor . This factor is an indication for the effectiveness of the catalyst particle,
and it is:

When inserting the expressions from equations 3.3.6 and 3.3.7 for effr and maxr , then an

When plotting the internal effectiveness factor against the Thiele modulus, a graph is obtained

4. Description of the experiment
4.1. Experimental setup
The experiment is carried out in a discontinuous, aerated three phase double-walled glass
reactor, a so called Slurry reactor, with a capacity of 800 ml. The reactor is equipped with
quick fit connections for a thermometer, the gas inlet and exhaust, a pH-electrode, a titration
pipette and a disk stirrer. A simplified scheme of the reactor is given in fig. 4.1.1.
Figure 4.1.1: Scheme of the double-walled reactor
The reaction temperature is controlled by a water/ethylene glycol mixture (1:1) cooled in a
cryostat. A stirring device fixed above the reactor is used to control the rotating speed of the
stirrer. An automatic titrator filled with hydrochloric acid is used to keep the pH value of the
Catalytic Reduction of Nitrite 9
reaction solution constant. The pH value is controlled by the pH electrode of the automatic
titrator. In fig. 4.1.2 a simplified technical flow diagram of the experimental setup is shown.
Fig. 4.1.2: Flow diagram of the experimental setup.
4.2 Experimental procedure
The reactor is filled with 500 ml dist. water and the temperature of the cryostat should be
adjusted to 10 °C. The cooling should be started afterwards and the thermometer should be
fixed to control the temperature of the solution. The speed of the stirrer should be set to 50
U/min. During cooling the pH electrode of the automatic titrator should be calibrated by a two
point calibration procedure, using the pH 4 and pH 7 buffer solutions.
0.3 g of Pd/Al2O3 catalysts of each required grain fraction are weighed (wear gloves and dust
mask during weighing). When the reaction temperature of 10 °C is maintained, one of the
weighed catalyst grain fractions is flushed into the reactor with 95 ml of dist. water. Then,
5 ml of sodium nitrite solution (c = 0.2175 mol/l) are pipetted in the reactor.
As soon as the temperature reaches 10 °C the rotating speed of the stirrer is adjusted to 470
U/min and hydrogen (usually min/100 mlV ) is introduced into the reactor. All connections
should be tightened carefully and the gas sealing of the reactor must be tested with the
hydrogen leak detector. After a short start-up phase the pH value should increase. The
program of the titrator should be started immediately. After about 20 min the reaction is
Catalytic Reduction of Nitrite 10
finished. The hydrogen flow must be stopped, before the solution is removed from the reactor
with a rubber hose. The reactor should be rinsed several times with dist. water. After cleaning
it is possible to start the filling procedure again and use the next catalyst fraction.
5. Data analysis
The volume of HCl added to the solution is recorded by the titrator and saved on a computer.
The volume of HCl has to be plotted against the time. The linear part of the plot should be
used to calculate the reaction rate and the reaction rate constant. Please take great care when
determining the concentrations present in the reactor. Using the calculated reaction rates the
experimental internal effectiveness factor can be determined. The Thiele moduli and the
theoretical internal effectiveness factor should be calculated from the experimental reaction
rate constant. Theoretical and experimental internal effectiveness factors are to be plotted
against the determined Thiele moduli. The consistence of the two diagrams should be
checked. The quality of the results should be discussed and potential errors should be
mentioned.
