but those who were invited were not worthy to come. Go out, therefore, into the main roads and invite to the feast whomever you find.’

Dear St. Joseph Parishioners and Friends of the Cathedral: Each Sunday we take up the collection at Mass by plac-ing baskets in front of the altar and inviting all in at-tendance to support the parish by putting their Sunday envelopes and cash in the baskets. This is not merely taking up the collection but expresses more deeply the act of placing our gifts at the altar and assuming active stewardship within the parish community. It is truly part of the presentation of gifts culminating in the offer-ing of bread and wine to be transformed into the pres-ence of the Body and Blood of Christ. A vital aspect of stewardship in any parish is accounta-bility. Each year I report to the parish how, in collabo-ration with the Cathedral Staff and members of the fi-nance team, I have used the financial resources you have entrusted to us in support of parish ministries, pro-grams, and initiatives. A summary of our financial re-port is included in this weekend’s bulletin. As stated in the summary, our collections have re-mained strong and we continue to monitor spending and control costs. Regular Sunday collections, second col-lections supporting Social Ministries, tuition assistance, the building fund, and the many collections supporting local, national, and international needs reveal the gener-osity of this community. Thank you. I and the staff remain committed to responsible stewardship of the gifts you entrust to us. As I reflect on this responsibility I also consider my contributions to the parish. I invite each member of the parish and others who join with us in worship and ser-vice to reflect on your support of the parish and engage-ment in our mission. Does the support that is offered reflect the mission with which we have been entrusted and the value we place in this parish? Can I contribute one hour of income each week to support the parish? Cada domingo realizamos la colecta en Misa colocando canastas en frente del altar e invitando a todos los que están presentes a apoyar a la parroquia al meter sus so-bres dominicales y efectivo en las canastas. No es sola-mente una colecta sino una expresión profunda del acto de presentar nuestra ofrenda ante el altar y tomar respon-sabilidad activa dentro de la comunidad parroquial. For-ma una verdadera parte de la presentación de los dones culminando en el ofrecimiento del pan y del vino a ser transformados en la presencia del Cuerpo y de la Sangre de Cristo.

Un aspecto vital de la responsabilidad por una parroquia es el rendimiento de cuentas. Cada año yo reporto a la parroquia cómo, en colaboración con los empleados y miembros del equipo financiero, he usado los recursos financieros que nos han encomendado para el apoyo de los ministerios, programas e iniciativos parroquiales. Encontrará un resumen de nuestro reporte financiero en el boletín de hoy.

Como dice el resumen, nuestras colectas han permaneci-do fuertes y seguimos vigilando los gastos y controlando los costos. Las primeras colectas, las segundas colectas dominicales a beneficio del Ministerio Social, las cuotas escolares, el mantenimiento de la Catedral, y las diversas colectas que apoyan las necesidades locales, nacionales e internacionales revelan la generosidad de esta comuni-dad. Es más, nuestro proyecto - Ventanas de Esperanza - sigue en vigor debido a su generosidad junto con las contribuciones privadas. Gracias. Yo y el cuerpo laboral seguimos comprometidos a ser responsables con las con-tribuciones que ustedes nos encomiendan a nosotros. Support Group for Families of Incarcerated Persons The Diocese of San Jose, through the Office of Restorative Justice, has formed a support group for family members of incarcerated persons. This group meets at 7:00pm on the third Tues-day of each month at the Women’s Gathering Place (First Presbyterian Church) 49 North 4th Street, San Jose 95112. The purpose of this group is to provide support, encouragement, and prayer during this difficult time.

ONE HOUR of Support Jesus’ teaching of the story of the widow’s

mite [Luke 21:1-4], teaches us that our giving

to the up- building of the Body of Christ,

Church is not restricted to the wealthy—by

whatever arbitrary standard we measure

wealth.

We give back to God of our treasure and re-

sources as an act of recognition and thanksgiv-

ing for God’s ineffable provision to us. What-

ever providing we have for ourselves, even if

we think we’ve worked very hard for it, is ulti-

mately by God’s provision and bounty.

“To whom much has been given, much will be

demanded.” The standard of giving is ten per-

cent of our income. One hour of our wage is

what we can begin to offer God to support the

work of His people, the Cathedral, the Church.

trust, faithfulness and openness using all of

God’s gifts for God’s glory.

Immediately after criticizing the religious leaders through the para-ble of the tenants last Sunday, Jesus tells another parable, again directed at the religious leaders. In the parable of the wedding feast, Jesus offers an image of the king-

dom of heaven using the symbol of a wedding banquet. In today’s first reading from the prophet Isaiah and in today’s psalm, the Lord’s goodness is evident in the symbol of a feast of good food and wine. Jesus’ listeners would have been famil-iar with the image of a wedding feast as a symbol for God’s salvation. They would consider them-selves to be the invited guests. Keeping this in mind helps us to understand the critique Jesus makes with this parable. The context for this para-ble is the growing tension between Jesus and the Jewish religious leaders in Jerusalem. The parable is straight-forward. The king dispatches his serv-ants to invite guests to the wedding feast that he is planning for his son. The first guests refused the invitation. Who would refuse the king’s invita-tion? A second dispatch of servants follows. Again, some guests ignore the invitation. Some of the invited guests even go so far as to mistreat and kill the servants. The king invokes his retribution against these murderers by destroying them and burning their city. Why would some guests kill the servants sent to invite them to the king’s wed-ding feast? It might be that the king was a tyrant, evidenced by the destruction of the city of those who refused his invitation. But then the allegory seems to be about something other than the king-dom of heaven. More likely the destruction of the city would have been a powerful image corre-sponding to the destruction of Jerusalem by the Romans in A.D. 70, an important event for Mat-thew’s audience. With the invited guests now deemed unworthy to attend the king’s wedding feast, the servants are sent to invite whomever they can find. Guests arrive, but it appears that accepting the king’s invitation brings (cont’d)

S aint of the Week Saint Teresa of Avila March 28, 1515 – October 4, 1582 Teresa lived in an age of exploration as well as po-litical, social, and religious upheaval. It was the

16th century, a time of turmoil and reform. She was born before the Protestant Reformation and died almost 20 years after the closing of the Council of Trent. The gift of God to Teresa in and through which she became holy and left her mark on the Church and the world is threefold: She was a woman; she was a contemplative; she was an active re-former. As a woman, Teresa stood on her own two feet, even in the man’s world of her time. She was “her own woman,” entering the Carmelites despite strong opposition from her father. She is a person wrapped not so much in silence as in mystery. Beautiful, talented, outgoing, adapta- ble, affectionate, courageous, enthusiastic, she was totally human. Like Jesus, she was a mystery of paradoxes: wise, yet practical; intelligent, yet much in tune with her expe- rience; a mystic, yet an energetic reformer; a holy woman, a womanly woman. Teresa was a woman “for God,” a woman of prayer, discipline, and compassion. Her heart belonged to God. Her ongoing conversion was an arduous lifelong struggle, involving ongoing purification and suffering. She was misunderstood, misjudged, and opposed in her efforts at reform. Yet she struggled on, courageous and faithful; she struggled with her own mediocrity, her illness, her opposition. And in the midst of all this she clung to God in life and in prayer. Her writings on prayer and contemplation are drawn from her experience: powerful, practical, and graceful. She was a woman of prayer; a woman for God. Teresa was a woman “for others.” Though a contemplative, she spent much of her time and energy seeking to reform herself and the Car-melites, to lead them back to the full observance of the primitive Rule. She founded over a half-dozen new monas-teries. She traveled, wrote, fought—always to renew, to reform. In her self, in her prayer, in her life, in her efforts to reform, in all the people she touched, she was a woman who inspired and gave life. Her writings have helped gen-erations of believers. In 1970, the Church gave her the title she had long held in the popular mind: Doctor of the Church. She and St. Catherine of Siena were the first wom-en so honored.

Bella, talento-sa, extrovertida, adaptable, cariñosa, valien-te, entusiasta—totalmente humana. Como Jesús, era un misterio paradójica: sabia per práctica; inteligente pero sintonizada con su experiencia; mística pero reformista entu-siasmada; una mujer santa, una mujer feme-nina. Teresa era “para Dios,” una mujer de oración, disciplina y compasión. Su Cora-zón era para Dios. Su conversión continua fue una lucha ardiente de por vida, constan-te purificación y sufrimiento. Fue mal juz-

gada, malentendida y opuesta por sus esfuerzos por la re-forma. Sin embargo, siguió adelante, valiente y fiel; lucho contra su propia mediocridad, su enfermedad, su oposi-ción. Y en medio de todo esto, se aferro a Dio en vida y oración. Sus escrituras sobre la oración y contemplación vienen de su experiencia: poderosa, práctica y llena de gracias. Era una mujer de oración, una mujer para Dios. Teresa era una mujer “para los demás.” A pesar de ser una contemplativa, usó su energía para reformarse y reformar a las Carmelitas., guiándolas hacia la plena entrega a la Regla primitiva. Fundó más de media docena de nuevos monasterios. Viajó, escribió, luchó siempre por renovar y reformarse. En su persona, su oración, su vida, su esfuerzo por reformar, en cada persona que conoció , fue una mujer que impulsó y dio vida. Sus escrituras han ayudado a ge-neraciones de creyentes. En 1970, la Iglesia le dio el título de Doctor, compartiendo con Sta. Catalina de Siena el honor de ser las primeras mujeres dadas este honor.
