“The Church is a Fountain of Living Water in the Desert”: How Blessed We Are!

On September 11, 1865, The Paterson Daily Press published the words spoken by Bishop Bayley at the laying of the cornerstone of what would become the magnificent church that we now call “home”. These words are as true now as they were over 150 years ago. “The Church is, indeed, a fountain of living waters in the desert, spreading fertility and blessings around it and refreshing and blessing the weary traveler on his journey through life. It is indeed a great and a good work we are engaged in. It is a work for the glory and honor of the Good and Supreme Ruler of all things, and it cannot fail to bring down blessings on ourselves and all who come after us. The erection of a church is a noble act of faith; not expressed in words but built up in enduring brick and stone, and thus stronger and more complete than mere words. It shows that you honor God and love your religion; that you are anxious for the glory of the House of God, and wish its rites to be fitly celebrated. It shows, too, that you are anxious that those who come after you shall bow at the same altars, and be guided by the same precepts that you are guided by. The Catholic Church has always been a church builder.” My dear friends, while we are not building a church, we are building a center where the Word of God and the beautiful teachings of our Church can be received, understood, and savored. Like the St. John’s parishioners of two centuries ago, we are “anxious” for those who will come after us. Will they be guided by the same beautiful precepts that guide our everyday lives and provide us with the courage to get out of bed each day and face the challenges of life in love? How blessed we are by God with the gift of faith and the passionate desire to pass along that faith to all those who come after us! For as Pope Benedict XVI had reminded us, “Faith is given to me by God through a community of believers that is the Church and projects me into the multitude of believers, into a kind of communion that is not only sociological but rooted in the eternal love of God who is in Himself the communion of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, it is Trinitarian Love. Our faith is truly personal, only if it is also communal: it can be my faith only if it dwells in and moves with the ‘we’ of the Church, only if it is our faith, the common faith of the one Church.” How blessed we are to be members of this one Church and to call St. John’s “home”!
