The Mission of the New Evangelization: To Be Instruments of Mercy

I’ll never forget the day. It was August 12, 2014 and I was serving as the English Language Official on the Pontifical Council for the Promotion of the New Evangelization at the Vatican. The President of our Pontifical Council, Archbishop Rino Fisichella, called all of the Officials into his office to share with us the big news, information so important that it had to be kept under the Pontifical Secret: There was going to be an Extraordinary Holy Year, a Jubilee of Mercy! And, it was going to be our Office that would be responsible for organizing it for the Holy Father and the Church. As our planning began, we quickly realized that the Holy Father wanted this Jubilee to be different than any other of the 28 which had preceded it. It would be the first Jubilee to celebrate an attribute of God and to be celebrated not only in Rome but in all of the Local Churches around the world—in the nursing home, in the jail cell, in the hospital, in the street… Thus, each major event to be held in Rome would be an example for what could be celebrated all around the world. The Pope’s desire was to gather particular groups of people—catechists, children, priests, deacons, prisoners, those who suffer, disabled, ill, police, and so many others—in order to help them gaze “even more attentively on mercy so that they may become a more effective sign of the Father’s action in the world.”

But why did the Holy Father select the Council for New Evangelization to lead the Jubilee of Mercy? It was during one of these events held in Rome, the Jubilee for ill and those with disabilities, that it all made sense. Amidst the beautiful faces and joyful spirits of those whose bodies were broken, I realized how Pope Francis was making Mercy—Divine Mercy—the next stage in the Church’s mission of the new evangelization. In continuity with St. John Paul II and Pope Benedict, it would be through mercy that the one and the same Gospel from the beginning would be proclaimed with new enthusiasm and great joy.

Friends, God is Love. Love is not what God does but it is who God is. God is love. And it is mercy which is the concrete and the active expression of our God who is love. Love in action is mercy and it is mercy which is the ultimate and supreme act by which God comes to meet us. And it is here that we come to understand the very mission of the Church: “Mercy is the very foundation of the Church’s life… Mercy is the force that reawakens us to new life and instils in us the courage to look to the future with hope” (Pope Francis). It is here that we see that for Pope Francis the mission of the new evangelization—of reawakening people to love, faith and hope—is carried out by being merciful and by doing merciful acts: “Mercy is the bridge that connects God and man, opening our hearts to the hope of being loved forever despite our sinfulness.” May we take up the charge to be evangelizers and instruments of Divine Mercy!
