The Most Humble Focus on Service by Pope Francis
At the inaugural mass six days after becoming Pope on march 19th 2013, Pope Francis said, “let us never forget that authentic power is service, and that the pope, too, when exercising power, must enter ever more fully into that ser-vice….. He must be inspired by the lowly, concrete, and faithful service which marked St. Joseph and like him, he must open his arms to protect all of God’s people and embrace with tender affection the whole of humanity, especially the poorest, the weakest, the least important, those whom Matthew lists in the final judgement on love; the hungry, the thirsty, the stranger, the naked, the sick and those in prison. Only those who serve with love are able to protect.” In his first month as Pope, he emphasized on the necessity of service by saying: “Christians are called to do the great work of evangelizing to the ends of the world in a spirit of humility rather that an attitude of conquer-ing……. Preaching the gospel requires humility, service, charity, brotherly love. To approach evangelization with an imperialism or attitude of conquering does not work.” The true power of Christian leadership comes from good service and dialogue. “Dialogue is born from a respectful atti-tude toward the other person, from a conviction that the other person has something good to say. It supposes that we can make room in our heart for their point of view, their opinion, and their proposals. Dialogue entails a warm recep-tion and not a pre-emptive condemnation. To dialogue, one must know how to lower the defenses, to open the doors of one’s home and to offer warmth.”

Christ’s Baptism….our Baptism
God in His intimate relationship with man, shows no partiality, but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him. God “baptizes” the person by His very love and particular attention that He wants to give him with the help of a new Christian identity and char-acteristic. Therefore the baptized person, led by the spirit and the grace of God is included in the community, in the Body of Christ which is the Church. Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist, and formed part of the community because He be-came a man like us, identifying Himself with each one of us in particular.
A voice from heaven was heard proclaiming Jesus as “My Son, the beloved with whom I am well pleased”. In Mark’s gospel, other voices proclaim Jesus as just that. On two other separate occasions, that is during the Transfiguration and also on Good Friday at the crucifixion. We, during the baptismal ritual, are given a special Christian name to identify us with Christ and His Body, the Church. We each have our own unique identity and that identity shares in the “inward and spiritu-al grace of baptism”. Each one of us have unique gifts and abilities that are part of Christ’s body.
During the advent season we have focused so much on the Crib and on Bethlehem, the place where Christ was born. Talking about Nazareth, we keep on explaining something about the child-hood of Christ. This deep focus helps us to discern well the whole simple and humble background of Christ’s birth and growth as a normal person
among others, yet as God, who left everything behind, especially his equality, to live among us as the translation of Emanuel goes.
Today we look and reflect on the place where Jesus was baptized, and where we were in awesome wonder accepted as Christ’s children in the Jordan. What does that mean to us now? That is a big question that we need to ask ourselves. Is our bap-tism still relevant? Is it still useful as a form of belonging to an active and vibrant community of brothers and sisters, or is it like a one way ticket where we can selfishly enough think only of our-selves and ignore those who are not to our taste and form?
Let us become more aware of our faith by reflect-ing and evaluating the real meaning of our bap-tism. As we look once again at the baptism of our children, do we feel triggered spiritually once again to serve Christ and his Church better in all that is good witnessing, proclamation of the word, and other fraternal activities that can really en-hance the strategic importance of our oneness in Christ Jesus? Are we strong enough faithfully to check and shut the mouth of all prophets of doom who predict only falsehood, division and destruc-tion in their speeches?
We are the present and the future. Let us be those representatives of Christ wherever we are, so that the light will overcome darkness through the pow-er of Christ in our hearts.
