Feed The Hungry

A cynic once quipped: “What would you get if you crossed a radical liberal social justice advocate with a strongly conservative pious daily communicant?” The answer? Dorothy Day!

That’s a piece of wit which it can serve to throw some light on how one might begin, today, to live out the first corporal work of mercy, the command to feed the hungry.

How do we feed the hungry? Even if we are convinced, and perhaps even obsessed, by Jesus command to do this, how in fact can it be done today? The world is a big place and millions upon millions of people live in hunger. Moreover we live a situation of compounded complexity of every sort, political, social, and economic. There is no simple way to get resources from the rich to the poor, from your table to the table of someone who is hungry. How can you live out Christ’s command to feed the hungry, given the complexities of today’s world?

Generally speaking, rightly and wrongly, we look to our governments, the United Nations, relief organizations, social services, welfare, and other such agencies to do this for us. Given the scope and complexity of poverty and hunger in the world, the tendency is to look over our shoulders, to something massive, to some big government or agency, to feed the hungry. We tend to feel too small and individually over-powered in the face of hunger’s enormity.

Esa es una pieza de ingenio que puede servir para dar algo de luz sobre cómo uno podría comenzar, hoy, a vivir la primera obra de misericordia corporal, el mandato de alimentar a los hambrientos.

¿Cómo alimentamos a los hambrientos? Aunque estemos convencidos, y tal vez, aun obsesionados, por el mandato de Jesús de hacer esto, ¿cómo se puede hacer en este tiempo? El mundo es un lugar muy grande y millones y millones de personas viven con hambre. Además vivimos una situación de complejidad compuesta de todo tipo, política, social y económica. No hay una manera simple de obtener recursos de los ricos a los pobres, desde su mesa hasta la mesa de alguien que tiene hambre. ¿Cómo puedes vivir el mandato de Cristo de alimentar a los hambrientos, dadas las complejidades del mundo de hoy?

Pero esto puede ser, y frecuentemente, una justificación, un abandono, una forma de escapar del mandato de Jesús. Al Final, no podemos utilizar la excusa de que las cosas son demasiado complicadas, que somos demasiado pequeños e impotentes, y que solo las grandes organizaciones pueden hacer algo por los hambrientos. El llamado del Evangelio para alimentar a los hambrientos es intransigente y eminentemente personal. Hay un par de posibles enfoques: Madre Teresa tomó un enfoque. Para ella, el mandato de Jesús era sencillo y claro. Cada uno de nosotros debería, personalmente, más allá del gobierno y otras agencias, llegar de manera concreta y tocar a alguna persona o personas pobres. Debería haber momentos en que, literalmente, llevemos comida a personas hambrientas, trabajemos en comedores populares, ayudemos a personas de la calle y que una persona pobre coma en nuestra mesa. Este enfoque es individual, personal y concreto. Cada persona pobre tiene una cara y uno no, al menos no todo el tiempo, hace preguntas de dónde comerá esa persona mañana o qué problemas sociales están causando esta hambre. Desde ese punto de vista, la obligación de que alimentemos a los hambrientos nos desafía a ir más allá de las ideologías y teorías sociales, e independientemente de las estructuras sociales, como el Buen Samaritano, de persona a persona, llevando alimento a los hambrientos.

Pero hay otro enfoque, más abstracto aunque no menos crítico. Desde este punto de vista, es menos importante alimentar a esta o aquella persona en un día determinado que a cambiar las estructuras sociales, políticas y económicas que son responsables de que esa persona en particular tenga hambre. Este enfoque es menos personal y más lento, pero puede, al final del día, ser de mayor alcance. En ella, uno intenta alimentar a los hambrientos involucrándose en grupos de justicia social que intentan cambiar las condiciones que producen la pobreza.

Ambos enfoques, en sus mejores expresiones, se basan en algunas otras cosas: alimentar a los hambrientos, como Jesús nos pide que lo hagamos, implica una reducción en nuestro propio nivel de vida. Alimentar a los hambrientos significa consumir menos, hacer ayunos y vivir una sencillez que nos hace más solidarios con los pobres. Alimentar a los hambrientos también significa orar. Tenemos algunos malos hábitos que solo Dios puede sanar y, por lo tanto, solo el poder externo de Dios puede transformar nuestro mundo.

But this can be, and invariably is, a rationalization, an abdication, a way of escaping Jesus’ command. Ultimately we cannot use the excuse that things are too complicated, that we are too small and powerless, and that only huge organizations can do anything for the hungry. The gospel call to feed the hungry is uncompromising and eminently personal. Each of us is called upon personally to do something real and this must be something beyond the normal corporate things we are involved in, paying taxes and giving charity monies to governments and big agencies to enable them to do this for us. We must do something ourselves.

But what more can we do concretely? How can you and how can I feed the hungry?

There are a couple of possible approaches: Mother Theresa took one approach. For her, Jesus’ command was simple and clear. Each of us should personally, beyond government and other agencies, reach out concretely and touch some poor person or persons. There should be times when we are, literally, taking food to hungry people, working in soup kitchens, giving aid to individual street people, and having a poor person eat at our table. This approach is individual, personal, and concrete. Each poor person has a face and one does not, at least not all the time, ask questions regarding where this person will eat tomorrow or what social problems are causing this hunger. In this view, the demand that we feed the hungry challenges us precisely to reach out beyond ideologies and social theories and irrespective of social structures, like the Good Samaritan, person-to-person, take food to the hungry.

But there is another approach, more abstract though not less critical. In this view, it is less important to feed this or that individual person on a given day than it is to change the social, political, and economic structures that are responsible for that particular person being hungry. This approach is less personal and slower, but can, at the end of the day, be more far-reaching. In it, one attempts to feed the hungry by involving oneself in social justice groups that are trying to change the conditions that produce poverty.

Both of these approaches, in their best expressions, are predicated on some other things: Feeding the hungry, as Jesus asks us to do it, involves a reduction in our own standard of living. To feed the hungry means to consume less ourselves, to do some fasting, and to live in a simplicity that puts us in more solidarity with the poor. Feeding the hungry also means prayer. We have some bad habits that only God can cure and thus only the outside power of God can ultimately transform our world.

So which is the best approach? As Christians, our task is not to pick between being a Mother Theresa or a social justice advocate. The gospel asks us to be both. We need to work at transforming the conditions that create poverty even as we, like Mother Theresa, reach out personally, beyond the economics and social issues involved, to feed very individual poor people.

English Baptism Preparation Sessions, for both Parents and

Godparents are normally held on the Second Sunday of each

month at 4:00pm at the parish office. Please call the parish

office in order to register for the session. The session will

include a discussion of the sacrament of Baptism, the

completion of the necessary forms, a review of the guidelines

for potential Godparents and the date for the Baptism will be

chosen. English Baptisms take place on the fourth weekend of

the month at one of the Masses.

Receiving the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick before going

to the Hospital

If you or a loved one is going to the hospital for surgery or

treatment, we urge you to receive the Sacrament of Anointing

of the Sick before being hospitalized. The Sacrament can be

received after any Mass or by appointment. While the friars

respond to hospital emergency call requests, receiving the

Sacrament before going to the hospital is preferable in the

event that one of the friars is not immediately available in an

emergency. Your family and friends are welcome to join you

for this special celebration so they can pray for you too.

The Boy Scouts of Troop #9 and the Knights of Columbus Assembly #2254 will be collecting American Flags for proper disposal after all Masses on the weekend of Aug 4th and 5th When an American flag becomes worn, faded, torn or soiled, it should be retired and replaced with a new flag. There are several ways to respectfully dispose of the American flag without showing disgrace. The most common method is burning the torn or tattered flag in a special ceremony. PLEASE remember to bring your worn-out flags to Mass on August 4/5. Thank you in advance for your participation.

Please Note: The FaithAction ID Card program is a means of providing a picture ID Card to anyone who may need one for their personal use. It is not limited to any specific group of persons.

The FaithAction ID Card program schedule here at Blessed Sacrament Church for the next several months is as follows:

Wednesday Evening—August 8—Doors open @ 6:00 PM

Friday Morning—September 14—Doors open @ 9:00 AM

No one is admitted once the orientation session begins. So please plan accordingly.

Requirements for the Faith ID Card:

1) Participation in the FaithAction ID Orientation;

2) Proof of Identification (original documents not copies: i.e., national ID card, passport, school ID, expired driver’s license, library card with photo, work permit with photo, border cross card, birth certificate along with a photo ID from this list, etc…)

3) Proof of current address within 2 months (i.e. phone or electricity bill, lease agreement, bank statement, etc…)

The FaithAction ID Card will cost $10 (cash or check only) and will include your photo, full name, and address, date of birth, country of origin, and expiration date, along with the FaithAction Logo.

Favor de notar: El programa de tarjeta de identificación FaithAction es un medio para proporcionar una tarjeta de identificación con foto a cualquier persona que la necesitar para su uso personal. No se limita a ningún grupo de personas en particular.

3)Prueba de dirección actual de los últimos dos meses (es decir, teléfono o facturas de electricidad, contrato de arrendamiento, estado de cuenta bancaria, etc ...)

La Tarjeta de Identificación FaithAction costará $10 (efectivo o cheque solamente) e incluirá su foto, nombre completo y dirección, fecha de nacimiento, país de origen, y la fecha de vencimiento, junto con el logotipo de FaithAction.
