Message from the Bishop

Dear Friends in Christ,

As yet another year has passed since we last reported to you on the progress of your foundation, The Catholic Foundation for the People of the Diocese of Bismarck, and I must thank you again and again for your continued financial generosity to our Church. Given the current financial climate in our nation, your wonderful financial support of all of our apostolates is truly appreciated.

In reading this Annual Report for The Catholic Foundation it is my hope that you will see that we have continued to try to be the best stewards of your gifts to our parishes, schools and the Diocese itself. What continues to be your greatest gift is your daily prayers for our priests, active and retired, our seminarians, our devoted deacons and all of those diocesan and parish staff members who continue to serve us all so faithfully.

Your prayers and generous financial support really do make Our Lord Jesus present to the thousands of children and youth in our schools and parish religious education programs, to the countless poor whom we serve in their time of need, to our seminarians who continue to prepare themselves to be our future priests, and to all those men and women whom the Lord is calling to true marriage and family life. Again, I can only say thank you in my own name and in theirs.

My priorities for the future of our Diocese continue to be the fostering of vocations to the diocesan priesthood and the consecrated life for women and men, the further advancement and strengthening of our Catholic schools and Parish religious education programs, our youth and young adult ministry, and all the beautiful aspects of married and family life. With your continued and generous prayers and financial support, I have every confidence the Catholic life of all of us in the Diocese will grow and strengthen and we will be able to better serve our good God by serving others through His Church.

Once again, I can only say thank you and I promise to remember each and every one at Mass every day. Let us continue to pray for and serve each other in truth and love.

Gratefully yours in Christ Jesus,

Most Reverend David D. Kagan Bishop of Bismarck

Most Reverend David D. Kagan

Dear Friends,

As President of the Board of Directors, it is my distinct honor to bring you this 2015-2016 Annual Report of the Catholic Foundation for the People of the Diocese of Bismarck.

The Foundation achieved considerable growth this past year, primarily because of your great faith and stewardship. I invite you to spend some time with this report to witness the difference you are making, and as you do, please note some of the highlights: an increasing number of named family endowment funds and more parishes participating in both agency and endowment accounts. As a Foundation, we recently had the largest matching gift program ever in support of our diocese’s twenty-eight seminarians.

Your Catholic Foundation has seen tremendous growth this year, which directly impacts the number of ministries supported and at what level. Net assets have increased by $4,135,085 for total assets of $24,264,549 As a result, I am proud to say that this year we have $1,900,675 to distribute across diocesan ministries.

On behalf of Bishop Kagan, the Board of Directors and the Staff of The Catholic Foundation for the People of the Diocese of Bismarck, we want to “THANK YOU” for your continued support. May God bless you and your loved ones each and every day.

We encourage you to visit our website atwww.CatholicFoundationDOB.com or call our office at701-204-7229. We are happy to help assist in any way possible.

Sincerely,Deacon Michael Fix, President“Ensuring the faith for generations to come”

It’s widely acknowledged that there is a priest shortage in the U.S., but the Diocese of Bismarck in North Dakota has been experiencing a boom in priestly vocations for several years, and Catholic education has played a critical role.

In June 2013, Bishop David Kagan ordained six men to the priesthood. That fall, 14 new men entered seminary joining the 11 who were already in formation. Following the ordination of two men in May 2016, six more entered formation. With 29 men currently studying for the priesthood, the North Dakota diocese has one of the highest rates of seminarians per capita nationwide.

Of the current 29 seminarians, 26 attended a Catholic educational institution in the diocese. The diocese supports three secondary schools and 12 elementary and middle schools across the western side of the state.

In order to fully understand the upturn in vocations, Father Josh Waltz, vocation director for the diocese, finds helpful a per capita

comparison with the Diocese of Detroit. The Diocese of Detroit has around 1.5 million Catholics and 34 seminarians. The Bismarck Diocese has around 60,000 Catholics and 29 seminarians, which means that there is one seminarian for every 2,070 Catholics. For the Detroit diocese to have that same number per capita, they would need 725 seminarians.

Fr. Waltz is aware of the important role Catholic education has in fostering vocations. “Catholic education is the finest vehicle we have to catechize the youth,” he told The Cardinal Newman Society, “but it will only be successful if it is done well and the Catholic identity is strong in the school.”

The diocese has a practice of placing young, newly ordained priests in the Catholic high schools to serve as chaplains and religion teachers. Fr. Waltz is not worried that the young priests are inexperienced in the classroom: “They know the faith better than anyone in the school.” The diocese hopes that the students “will love their faith because they are being taught by an actual priest.”

Seminarian Jordan Dosch cites the presence of newly ordained priests in his high school as an important factor in his answer to the call. The young priests “taught me and showed me the importance of the Catholic faith. They were really on fire with the faith just because they were living out their vocation to the fullest degree, and it really spread to their students and inspired us as well.”

Catholic education is providing for the future of the Church through the formation of lay people and future priests alike. Rooted in these strongholds of Catholic education, the Diocese of Bismarck is on track to have more ordinations this decade than any of the previous three. During the 1980s there were 12 men ordained; during the following decade, a total of 16 men were ordained. Between 2000-2009, there were 24 new priests. Since 2010, there have already been 13 ordinations.

The Diocese of Bismarck is proud to administer and guarantee payment to all annuitants while benefitting the Catholic ministry of the donor’s choice, as can be seen by the beneficiary list below. A charitable gift annuity (CGA) is an income producing gift which helps the giver and the Church at the same time. The immediate benefit is that the donor receives a tax deduction, and the gift qualifies for the 40% ND State Tax Credit. Long-term, the donor has guaranteed income for life and usually more than would be had in a typical bank investment such as a Certificate of Deposit. And when the annuity matures, the remainder is gifted to support the Catholic mission of your choice. For more information about planning your Legacy Gift, please contact the Planned Giving Dept. at 701-204-7229.

Today more than ever, Americans want reliability, certainty and accountability. We are all looking for something stable, solid and firm. For many of us, it means a return to classic values and enduring ideals. One of these values is the charitable gift annuity.A charitable gift annuity is a way to make a gift to support the causes that you care about. You make a gift of cash or property to us. In return, we will make payments for life to you, you and a loved one, or another person. Each payment will be fixed and the amount of each payment will depend on the age of the person who receives the payments.

After all payments have been made, we will receive the remaining value of your gift to support the causes that matter to you. Call or visit our website for more information.

Stewardship PrayerLord God, giver of life

and all good gifts, You anointed Jesus with the Holy Spirit who inspired him to give everything he had for our sake. Move us by the same spirit of

stewardship to share first to the Lord, for the benefit of all.

By your grace, help us to follow in your footsteps and become more focused on loving and caring for our families, our

neighbors and our communities. Lead us to the awareness that

everything we are and everything we have is your gift.

Grant us the spirit of sacrifice to always seek your will and to

share our gifts with our brothers and sisters. May we be good

stewards of all we have received and cooperate with you in

building your kingdom of love and justice.

We ask this throughChrist our Lord.

Amen
