Feast of the Baptism of the Lord • Jan. 9-10, 2016

Christ was sent into the world to bring glad tidings to the poor,

to proclaim liberty to captives, to give sight to the blind, and

to free the oppressed (Lk 4:18). Christ came to effect a great

reconciliation, bringing about the salvation all. In Christ,

through baptism, we are born again and made a royal priest-

hood, a holy people set apart. As a result, we, the common

priesthood of the faithful, have a part in the mission of the

whole body—bringing glad tidings, proclaiming liberty, giv-

ing sight to the blind, and freeing the oppressed.

Bishop Vásquez’ Prayer Request

For the Church, that by perseverance in seeking and follow-

ing the light of God, she may serve as a beacon of God’s

love and mercy to all people …

-Papa Francisco, Misericordiae Vultus, 1

Year of Mercy

Jesus Christ is the face of the Father’s mercy. These words

might well sum up the mystery of the Christian faith. Mercy

has become living and visible in Jesus of Nazareth, reaching

its culmination in him. The Father, “rich in mercy” (Eph 2:4),

after having revealed his name to Moses as “a God merciful

and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love

and faithfulness” (Ex 34:6), has never ceased to show, in

various ways throughout history, his divine nature. In the

“fullness of time” (Gal 4:4), when everything had been ar-

ranged according to his plan of salvation, he sent his only

Son into the world, born of the Virgin Mary, to reveal his

love for us in a definitive way. Whoever sees Jesus sees the

Father (cf. Jn 14:9). Jesus of Nazareth, by his words, his ac-

tions, and his entire person[1] reveals the mercy of God.-

Our Eternal Destiny

Is the statement that "everyone is basically good, and almost everyone will go to heaven"

valid? Just read the newspaper, listen to the radio, or watch television. Many people behave as though

they’re basically evil, including many who never make it to the media. Is the abortionist a good fel-

low? How about the drug pusher? What about the incessant fornicator? What about those who seem

to build their lives around particular sins? Have they given their hearts over to Jesus - or to their pas-

sions?

True, everything that has been created has been created as good, including every person. But

we have free will, which we can use or abuse. We all abuse it at times, and we call such abuse as sin.

“All have sinned and are all deprived of the glory of God,” said St. Paul (Rom 3:23). Some people

will continue in sin until the end, at which time they will take the down escalator. Others will repent

of their sins and die in the state of grace; they will take the up escalator. How many will be on each

escalator? We simply do not know. Scripture doesn’t tell us the proportion outright, but there are un-

pleasant suggestions: “How narrow the gate and constricted the road that leads to life” (Matt. 7:14);

“many are invited, but few are chosen” (Matt. 22:14). When asked by an onlooker whether only a

few will be saved, Jesus replied, “Strive to enter through the narrow gate, for many, I tell you, will

attempt to enter but will not be strong enough” (Lk 13:24).

The common idea that most people will go to heaven arises, perhaps, from a lack of a sense of

the seriousness of sin and from a concentration on God’s mercy to the exclusion of his justice. More

than that, the idea is that he will save even those who don’t want to be saved. God will be merciful,

but only to those asking for his mercy. He won’t force his mercy or his salvation on anyone. Salva-

tion is a free gift, which, as with any gift, can be rejected. We have no good reason to think that there

will be only a few rejecters. How can we think such a thing, having lived through the bloodiest, cru-

elest century in human history?
