President’s Message

Dear Quilting Friends, We’ve all learned to survive remotely, some of us happier about it than others. People are being very productive, really plowing through their stash and cleaning out their closets. Online lectures and classes are flourishing and we’ve adapted to the reduced quilt shop hours in our area. But are we really thriving? Not according to Planet Money on NPR. This business show did an in-depth report on working from home versus working in an office. I think the principles and lessons apply to quilters. Research shows that workers are more productive from home. The quantity of work is impressive. There are fewer distractions and less time coming and going to work. Many of us have made more quilts and finished more UFOs than any other eighteen-month period of our lives. The success of the placemat production for Meals on Wheels proves we can produce! But… Research also shows that there has been less improvement and growth in business from home. Quality has suffered. Production is up, but innovation is down. Quick, casual, in-person meetings in the office are absent. Those quick, casual conversations led to creativity and inspiration that can’t be captured on a computer screen. So, are we quilting more, but doing less creatively? Are we trying new techniques, or just plowing along and getting it done? Turns out that “smart people learn from smart people” – a direct quotation from the radio

broadcast. I think quilters are smart people, and quilters have been working alone, learning a bit from computers and websites, but we need each other to reach our full potential. We need to be in the same room for show and tell. We need to wait for the iron in a class and look at how our friends are applying the

teacher’s lessons. We need to stand in line in the quilt shop and have time to eavesdrop on quilters making choices for their purchase. That’s when we flourish – together.

Happy Quilting!

Applique Quilters Needed Elva Farrell

The donor quilt for our 2023 Quilts in Paradise show is under construc-tion. However, there are still several blocks that need to be hand ap-pliqued. We are using the same pattern as our 2019 quilt with some modifications. If you have a love for hand applique and would like to participate in this project please contact me [email protected] or (941) 961-0364.

Wanted – a First Vice President and a Class Registrar, and Internet Guru Cathy Lane

It takes a village to run a quilt guild. It is time to install a new First Vice President for 2022. This two-year position is essential to the guild, as the 1st VP is the Education Chair, responsible for choosing and booking classes and in per-son lectures for five meetings a year. Presently members of the Education Committee and the Execu-tive Board are taking care of details. We have contracts for classes and lectures booked through March 2022. (Take a look at the Classes page of our website.) There are many people helping with this work; we just need someone to be the organizing boss. The Registrar keeps track of rosters for each class. The Registrar should be at meetings during the season so that members can sign up in person. Excel is not required to keep the lists, but good com-munication between the Treasurer and the Webmaster helps keep the lists accurate. Also, Barbie Bailey is ready to hand over her inspiring newsletter column titled Ways to Lose Yourself Online. If you like to spend time exploring the internet and finding new resources and fun places to surf, please consider taking over the writing of this column for our monthly newsletter. So, if you’re looking for something quilt related that doesn’t involve thread or fabric, maybe one of these jobs is for you. You just might find it’s the fun you were missing!

You’re invited to a Party!

There will be FREE PIE to all attendees at the 2021 Friendship Knot Quilter’s Holiday Party on December 13, 2021. Mark your calen-dars, get out those sparkly shirts, and come for fun. FREE PIE seems like reason enough to attend a guild meeting. But wait, there’s more… Susan Arndt is decorating the room. You have to be there to see it and believe it. The 2021 Member of the Year will be announced and celebrated. The First Great UFO Challenge Finale is finally here! Prizes will be awarded and brag-ging will ensue. New officers will be sworn into office. A fat quarter raffle will take place. You know you want new fabric. Look for purple, aq-ua, and green fabrics of quilt shop quality. The more fat quarters you bring, you more chances you have to win! All Faiths Food Bank donations will be raised through a 50/50 raffle. Tickets are $2.50 each, so bring some cash. Half of the money col-lected will go to the food bank. And FREE PIE to all attendees!

Member of the Year 2021 Cathy Lane

You have two short weeks to nominate this year’s Member of the Year. Think of some-one in the Friendship Knot Quilters’ Guild who happily makes the FKQG a better experience for all of us. This person is ready to help with a smile, quick to join in and help with the chores. This is a member who finds time to contribute to the business of making our guild succeed. Send your nomination for MOY and a brief description of why you are nominating that person to [email protected]. The newest Member of the Year will receive a free guild class, paid dues for 2022, and a blue Member of the Year name badge. Please remember that previous winners

cannot win again. The following active mem-bers have been MOY in the past, so cannot be nominated: Joy Abbott, Cass Bowen, Karen

Clark, Tena Davis, Elva Farrell, Ann Greene, Carroll Jenkins, Marlene Kurtz, Cathy Lane, Karla Lynch, Ellen Simon, Katie Metheny, and

Jann Warfield.

Closed caption is now available in Zoom meetings. I will enable this feature in our guild meetings, and you can activate the option if you choose to have the option of reading the text of our meeting. Call me if you’d like to practice this feature. Fair warning, the closed caption is lim-ited. When I was in a meeting with Susan Arndt, the closed caption called her Citizen.

Shelter Bed Buddy Workshop

Jane Sanks

We completed 73 beds in October. Our total for 2021 is 840 beds. We are still waiting for the Red Cross to reopen to our group so I can get some of this stuff out of my home. I still am not taking bags of stuffing. The demand for beds has decreased significantly. I have enough stuffing materials to last for several months stored in my garage and I need to get those used. Please do not drop off at my home nor bring them to guild meetings until the demand picks up. We will be working at the Red Cross facility beginning November 19th at 1 pm. How-ever, I cannot leave too much there. Thank you for your understanding. Jane Sanks (941) 923-4240 or (941) 726-2849. If you prefer, you could also send an email to [email protected].

Tips and Tricks Delores Simpson

This is my latest favorite tool discovery! After pressing a seam using steam, place this clap-per on the seam just pressed. The magic is in the steam remaining in the fabric longer, resulting in a super-flat seam! No pounding or hammering needed. The wood itself is weighty, so it flattens down the seam very well. The handy little pin cushion and ruler are useful too. I especially like the carved groove on each side that allows your fingers to get a good grip on it. Try it - I think you’ll like it!

2023 Quilt Show Chairs Needed Cathy Lane

Slowly but surely members are volun-teering to Chair the many committees needed to hold a successful quilt show in 2023. In fact, 25 of the 31 positions have been taken! Here are some of the open positions along with a brief description of what the jobs entails: Judging – Choose a certified judge and schedule that judge for two days the week be-fore our show. Volunteer Coordinator – Create and schedule volunteers needed for the show. Quilt Take Down – Coordinate the physical take down of the quilts and deliver them to the Quilt Return committee. This re-quires a group of volunteers and people willing to lend us step stools. And…we need a Quilt Show Chair – who will ensure that all of the many committee chairs have what they need to do their jobs. Call Cathy Lane if you want to know more about any of these open positions.

Placemats Elva Farrell

Keep making placemats! We’re over the top on the number we committed, so we have added a new recipient organization. One hundred sixty seven placemats were turned in at the October meet-ing. That brings the total I have boxed and stacked at my house to 972 placemats! We have the total we need (plus a few extra) for Sarasota Meals on Wheels, Venice Mobile Meals and Second Heart Homes. Because our members have worked, and are still working, on placemats, we have reached out to Manatee Meals on Wheels and offered placemats for their clients. I do not anticipate produc-ing a placemat for each of their 600 clients but they are excited to receive any we give to them. Our December 13th guild meeting will be the final collection of placemats. If you have fin-ished placemats and do not plan to attend the December meeting contact me and I will arrange to pick them up. Email me at [email protected] or call (941)961-0364.

Cottage Groups Denise Cordova Collado, Coordinator

Our thirst for camaraderie with our fellow quilting friends which we took for granted before

February of 2020 has caused some of us to consider whether vaccinations and masks would provide

enough protection from the dreaded disease to make getting together in person worth the risk. Others

decided that doing handwork outside in smaller circles might work, and even others found ways to

conduct virtual meetings on a regular basis which turned out to be a boon for our snowbird members,

especially those in Canada, who truly were in lock down for a good portion of the past two years.

I am in the process of reviewing all CGs that were active pre-pandemic to see if they are inter-

ested in expanding their group so that new members might be able to participate. I also have helped

two CG’s get off the ground and would be happy to help you find like-minded new quilting buddies if

you are willing to do a little of the work to approach others who also are searching for quilting part-

nerships.

Belonging to a Cottage Group provides many benefits to its members beyond sharing a love of

quilting: you can learn quilting methods from each other and support each other in their quilting pro-

jects; participate in common projects; take field trips (quilt shops, anyone?); make lasting friendships

and really have fun! A CG gives new members a place to get to know people and the Guild, and

helps quilters at all levels of expertise a place to hone their quilting skills and share their knowledge.

The Cottage Groups support Guild initiatives and charity projects, participate in the Biennial

quilt show, and serve as hostesses and greeters at Guild meetings.

I know that Guild members are often concerned about living in small quarters which could on-

ly accommodate a very small number of guests. Pieceful Meadows CG worked out an arrangement

with the activities director at the Meadows in northern Sarasota, and their group got permission to use

community facilities to overcome that problem. Perhaps this is a way around that consistent difficul-

ty.

Please contact me at [email protected] if you are looking to join or form a cottage group

close to where you live … though I know that many of us will drive from one end of Sarasota to the

other to see that special FKQG friend for a couple of hours! It would be awesome to build up the

number of CGs that meet regularly!

Wonderful Ways to Lose Yourself Online Barbie Bailey

It’s that time of year when our thoughts begin to turn to the holidays. Even though Florida’s version of winter generally means sunny days and warm temperatures, the following sites may help to put you into the holiday spirit. PEPPERMINT SWIRL HOLIDAY TREE SKIRT: For those of you who still enjoy putting a tree up during the holiday season but are looking for a little something to brighten it up, here is a cute tree skirt from Heather Kojan. Heather is a quilter, teacher, blogger, and pattern designer whose work has been featured in several quilting books as well as the magazine, Modern Patchwork Gifts. She is the author of the book Classic Modern Quilts. The free tree skirt instructions can be found by clicking here: https://www.fairfieldworld.com/project/peppermint-swirl-christmas-tree-skirt. If you are inter-ested in seeing what other projects Heather has to offer, or if you wish to subscribe to her monthly newsletter, please go to: www.heatherkojan.com. GIFTS FOR QUILTERS: Are you searching for a special gift for your best quilting buddy but are fresh out of ideas? If so, try visiting Zazzle to check out all their fun stuff. (www.zazzle.com/quilters+gifts) My favorite is a pillow with a cartoon couple. He’s looking out the window and it ap-pears to be snowing. He asks what the forecast is for today and she responds, “Outlook calls for ex-tended periods of quilting, with zero probability of cooking or cleaning.” MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS – ST. PETERSBERG: If you’d rather go out and enjoy the warm weather versus sitting at home on the computer, try a day-trip to the Museum of Fine Arts in St. Pe-tersburg, FL. Their current exhibition, “Pieced and Patterned, American Quilts 1800-1930,” runs through January 23, 2022. A senior entry ticket is $15. The museum is closed on Monday, so be sure to check their website for detailed information before you make the trip: www.mfastpete.org.

Program Notes Ellen Simon

Back in July, we presented a Zoom lecture with Karen Brown of Just Get It Done Quilts. Ka-ren has a very lively presence on You Tube. She has a series of short videos on all kinds of quilting topics and she has added a newer series called Karen's Quilt Circle where she interviews quilters on all manner of topics. The newest episode, which debuted Oct. 25, is an interview with ME! It all came about when we were chatting before the Zoom meeting started. We were talking about how to control our stashes and I mentioned that I keep some fabrics just for repairing quilts. The next day Karen con-tacted me and asked if I would be willing to talk about repairing quilts for her You Tube interviews. I was really surprised but what the heck, it might be fun. The conversation covered a lot of other topics and she decided to change the focus to T-Shirt quilts. Here is the link: https://youtu.be/Lc30Fuvziao You can also just go to You Tube and enter Karen's Quilt Circle, or Just Get it Done Quilts, and you will find all kinds of interesting videos to keep you en-tertained for hours. Wearing my other guild hat, the book/magazine sale in October brought in $140. Thanks to my helpers, Dayle Gruder and Marlene Kurtz and to all the mem-bers who brought in donations.
