Fifth Grade Cognative Abilities
Testing Our fifth grade students will take the CoGAT tests during the first week of February. These are as-sessments of academic potential we use to help us have a greater under-standing of our students. The mathematical subtest is one of the indicators used in determining rec-ommendation for acceler-ated seventh grade math. We will send home indi-vidual reports with the results in the early Spring. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Dr. Regan at 655-1324.
Dear Parents, I hope everyone had a restful holiday recess. It is hard to believe that we are almost one half the way through our academic year. Sec-ond semester begins on Monday, January 30. Report cards will be available on Power-School on February 3. Please see the test schedule listed below to assist in your planning. It is very helpful to us if you could schedule ap-pointments around these dates. If you have any ques-tions or concerns re-
garding our school, please call us at 655-1324. Best Wishes for 2012! Jean J. Regan, Ed.D. Principal Spring Testing Schedule

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
The Middle School Science
Club has been honing their obser-
vation and reporting skills as well
as hypothesizing and then con-
structing based on those guesses.
Some of them had to build a
tower of cards that would be the
tallest as well as the strongest.
While the others created a way
to drop an egg without cracking it
using a limited amount of supplies.
Next, they all created snowmen
to send to Kansas where 4th
grade students tried to match
them with the descriptions we
read during a video con-
ference in the library. All
of these skills will come in
handy in the coming weeks as we
get ready for the Middle School
Science Olympiad competition
being held at Syracuse University
in March. Good luck!

SCENES FROM THE SEASON
I hope everyone had a happy healthful holiday. The Health Of-fice continues to by quite busy. There have been the usual colds, headaches and stomach dis-tress but also a very debilitating virus that seems to predispose bronchitis and then pneumonia. Luckily the “flu” has not been re-ported in our area, it is not too late to be vaccinated. I can’t believe we are so far into the school year. The fall was crazy, busy with seriously ill children. High fevers that hung on for a week or longer and more pneumonia than I have ever seen in a student popula-tion. There are new guidelines on vi-sion and hearing screening. I am no longer mandated to check 6th grade students for this. If your child is having problems and you want them tested, please let me know. I will still see all 5th and 7th grade students.
Attention parents of 5th grade students. NYS Department of Health requires that all 11 year old 5th graders receive the Tdap vacci-nation. They can get this at their doctors or call the Department of Health at 366-2848 for their immu-nization clinics. This is mandatory for entrance into 6th grade. Dental certificates are being re-quested for all 7th grade stu-dents. If your child has never been to a dentist an appointment should be made. If you are taking your child to the dentist, the form to be completed is at the sign out sheet. Drs. Revercomb and Boule, Manlius dentists, provide a free dental cleaning day to students who do not have any insurance, their own dentist or Medicaid. In other words, families who just don’t have the finances to pay dental bills. Please let me know ASAP by calling 655-1332 if you would like your child to have the
opportunity to take part in this very generous offer. It is a wonderful way to provide the care your child may need without the cost that goes along with it. You must pro-vide the transportation to and from the office. Please don’t hesitate to call. I must submit BMI weight status category information to the state on 7th grade students. I only give the numbers of girls and boys in the different weight categories, no names are used. If you do not want your child counted in this sur-vey please send me a notice stating this. Please keep me informed of any health or other issues necessary for the proper care of your child. As I stated before, in an emergency I do not check with the teacher for in-formation to give to the ambulance or hospital so I need to be “in the loop”. Thank you for your coopera-tion.
