Jogging

When a friend of mine in junior high asked me if I would go jogging with him, everything in me fought against the idea. But I really enjoyed be-ing with him, so I braced myself early one morn-ing, and we went for our jog. Well, it was more

like a walk for me. I would jog from time to time, but my bones and my muscles were scream-ing, “Stop! Now!” Day after day, for weeks, I would come home ex-hausted, and needing muscle relaxant pills.

Angelo State Univer-sity’s plan to buy our church opens the door for us as a church to think, pray and plan for the future. We have known that our property is part of ASU’s centen-nial plan. From time to time over the years, ASU representatives would come and visit with us about buying our property. Since Dr. Rollo became president of the university, they have accelerated their building process. Two years ago, we formed an ad hoc com-mittee to do some research and make rec-ommendations to the church.

The ad hoc committee has scheduled a lunch meeting on Sunday, February 27 immedi-ately after the morning service to discuss our future. We need every-one to be there. Would you make this a matter of daily prayer? We need to ask for God’s wisdom and his guidance. We are excited to see what God has in store for us. Our loca-tion does not change the heart that God has given us “to make disci-ples, who make disci-ples, who make disci-ples…”

After a while, it seemed to get easier. Then I started craving it. The pain was replaced with satisfaction. I would still get tired from jog-ging, but I was also ener-gized. And very satis-fied. I believe that we go through the same process spiritually. We know our strength comes from spending time with God, in his word and in prayer, yet many believ-ers struggle even getting started. Therefore, when tough times come, we lack the spiritual vitality to face them. That is why a lot of believers fall flat on their faith. There are three phases you go through to get spiritually fit-- discipline, desire, and delight. Discipline. The Apostle Paul writes to Timothy, “… discipline yourself for the purpose of godliness. For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.” (2 Timothy 4:7, 8) The word “discipline” in the Greek is the word “gymnazo,” where we get the English word, “gymnasium,” or “gym” for short. The word reeks of sweat and muscle pains, and workout. Spending time with

God requires the kind of discipline that involves setting aside a specific block of time, finding a place where you cannot be disturbed, turning off your phone, the televi-sion, and the computer. You discipline yourself to go through a book of the Bible— one, two, five chapters at a time. You learn to write down things God is telling you through his word in your life. Discipline also requires you to either write down or find a system of re-membering people you are praying for. Each day. Also, thank him for who is and what he is doing in your life. God will also convict you of sins you have committed, and he does, you need to confess your sins to him. Desire. When you con-sistently discipline your-self, the inevitable out-come is desire. Even in the darkest of times, be-cause you have tasted that the Lord is good (1 Peter 2:3), your heart will long for him. David was fleeing for his life either from Saul or from his son Absalom when he penned this words, “O God, you are my God, earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you in a dry and weary land where there is no water.” (Psalm 63:1) The reason David

could write those words was because he had walked intimately with God since his youth, and he had seen God work in his life. Delight. And God will not disappoint. How would you pray if your life is in danger? What would you say to God if your own son is trying to kill you? Listen to the remainder of David’s prayer in Psalm 63, “So here I am in the place of worship, eyes open, drink-ing in your strength and glory. In your generous love I am really living at last! My lips brim praises like fountains. I bless you every time I take a breath; my arms wave like banners of praise to you. I eat my fill of prime rib and gravy; I smack my lips. It’s time to shout praises! If I’m sleepless at midnight, I spend the hours in grateful reflec-tion. Because you’ve al-ways stood up for me, I’m free to run and play. I hold on to you for dear life, and you hold me steady as a post.” (Psalm 63:2-8, The Message) By the way, you cannot reverse the process. It has to be discipline, then desire, then delight. You ready for a spiritual jog?
