Observances

ONAM

Onam, a festival of Sumptuousness, as we all know, brings a feel of unity, joy, colour & nostalgic memories in Malayalees world over; the reason why it is celebrate with fervour & festoon. Being a harvest festival of Kerala, it is celebrated by people from all walks of life thus endeared into the heart & mind of every single Keralite.

As a church, this year too we take due care to uphold & ignite the spirit of Onam by conducting ‘Sargotsav’, a Cultural Event, on 22nd, September.

SEVIKA SANGHAM

Then Jesus answered," Women you have great faith! Your request is granted." (Mat.15:28)

Mar Thoma Sabha is observing 11th Sept. 2011 as The Savika Sangham Day. The Mar Thoma Suvishesha Sevika Sangham was established in1919 during the Maramon convention under the leadership of Bishop Abraham Mar Thoma. The Sangham's motto is "Service and Evangelism through active participation of women believers.” More often in Bible we come across exemplary women as indomitable role models. The New Testament gives mention of women who accompanied Jesus in his ministry. Some of them are Mary -mother of Jesus, the Samaritan women, the Canaanite women and Martha and Mary while the un-named few are: the poor widow (Mark12:41-44) & the woman who anointed Jesus with expensive perfume (Matt26:6-13). Their life exemplifies:

1. Readiness to accept God's will - ACCEPTANCE

Mary - Mother of Jesus said: "I am the Lord's servant, may it happen to me as you have said".

Acknowledging the spiritual truth that we are His image will spark a sense of Self-respect that leads to Self- examination which invariably mirrors our inner strength & shortcomings. Therefore, Spiritual awareness will equip one to overcome adversities at ease by being the True Prayer Warriors.

2. Sharing Jesus' words and deeds – BEING A WITNESS

When the Samaritan women related her story to her townsfolk the people came to hear Jesus. Similarly we too are called to witness Jesus to our families & friends thereby sharing His Blessings with others.

3. Believing in God's Power - SPIRITUAL STRENGTH & READINESS

The Cannonite women pleaded with Jesus to cure her and Jesus answered her: "You are a woman of great faith. What you want will be done for you". Even when our prayers are not granted, readily accept the greater will of God.

4. CARING APPROACH

Martha and Mary welcomed Jesus to their house and cared for Him. Similarly be in touch with your own feelings and empathize with others too. The Sangham day exhorts us to keep serving the Lord according to the gifts and abilities which He has blessed us with and the stations of life He has placed us in.

SENIOR CITIZENS DAY

Mar Thoma Sabha observes 18th September 2011 as Senior Citizens Day. This is truly an auspicious day to honour the senior members amidst us by recognizing their faithful & laudable services imparted towards the well being of the church as a whole. Let us remember that it is our Christian duty to approach them with a cheerful heart expressing our appreciation, timely support & above all upholding the aged in our prayers.

EDUCATION DAY

4th September, 2011 is observed as Education Day. This is the day of prayer for our educational institutions and teachers. Education is universally recognized as one of the most fundamental building blocks for human development and that is one of the reasons why our Sabha is giving prominence to Education while witnessing Christ’ Love through Evangelism.

The three major issues of education in today’s

world, namely access, equity and quality need to be addressed in a holistic manner to ensure that our systems of education and research not only contribute to nation building but also to create a knowledgeable society, with values of sustainability, peace and development. This was the vision of our great leaders.

Therefore, join our hearts to remember those who polished our minds, formed our character, and developed our innate gifts.
