CBC Fremantle Newsletter | Week 5 Term 3
From the PrincipalFather Tony and I have just returned
from visiting one of our CBC Fremantle
families. Hopefully we have left the family
in a better place than when we arrived,
and for that Father Tony should probably
take the lion’s share of the credit. What
struck me on my way back to the College
is the surprise that the family feels about
the gesture; they almost felt apologetic
we have been inconvenienced. The truth
is that it is an honour to support any
member of our community when they
are in need, and that is a feeling I believe
is shared by all members of the CBC
Community.
Community is defined as a social unit
of any size that shares common values.
A faith community takes that definition
one step further, and includes religion
as one of the common elements. One
of the strengths of CBC Fremantle,
acknowledged in many forums, is its
sense of community. At enrolment
interviews, the context of that strength
is, “What can the CBC community offer
my son?” This is entirely appropriate, but
fails to address an extremely important
feature of a healthy community. In
healthy communities there is a great deal
more giving than receiving, which is why
the response is overwhelming when a
member of our community is need of
assistance.
One of the attributes we seek to develop
in the CBC gentleman is that he is selfless
by nature and able to form positive,

mutually beneficial relationships. In
today’s secular first world, where all kinds
of people suffer ailments based around
what they haven’t got, rather than what
they are blessed to have, this concept can
be quite foreign. My children have grown
up in a world of instant gratification,
where reality TV is all about what I can
get out of this situation, and where
people have become famous simply
by being famous, not for any positive
contribution they make to society. It is a
counter-cultural message that a young
person’s first thought should be about
someone else, and yet I know it is a
message most parents agree with.
The value of our faith community is that
each week, we relive the ultimate self-
sacrifice. The Eucharist reminds us of the
value placed on the service of, and for,
others. It is a message that is repeated
throughout your son’s time at our
College, and is celebrated publicly and
privately whenever it occurs.
In the space of a week, I have witnessed it
each day. Boys calling for the intentions of
others before prayer; boys volunteering
at short notice to help with a service
opportunity; boys offering support to new
students, or students who are struggling;
staff covering for their colleagues; staff
giving up their own time to support
students in every aspect of the College;
specialist staff from other schools
spending the weekend with members
of our community who are in need; the
unbelievable generosity in response
to this week’s House Fundraiser; the
members of the College Board taking a
day from their busy work lives to attend
an all-day Board meeting on Monday
– I could go on and on.
Our community is strong, and when
we are in need, it will nourish us. But
the true strength of our community is
that it is made up of many, many givers,
and the spirit of service, and quality of
relationships underpin that strength.
Selflessness is a rare attribute these days.
I am blessed to be part of a community
where it is so freely found.
Mr Domenic Burgio
Principal

Oblate Cup returns
CBC Fremantle returned home with the
Oblate Cup after a day of high energy
competition against Mazenod College.
Last year, CBC relinquished the Cup after
six successive years of victory, and the
boys were keen to win it back.
The Oblate Cup is an annual competition
that has been bringing together CBC
Fremantle and Mazenod College since
2008 in an active appreciation of the
involvement of the Oblates of Mary
Immaculate with both Colleges.
CBC’s Parish Priest and Oblate priest,
Father Tony Maher, watched the games
with interest, and spoke to each of the
year groups during the day about the
similarity between the two Colleges.
The competition involves boys from
Year 7 through to Year 12 participating
in soccer, hockey, basketball, football and
rugby games, with points going towards
a shield in each sport named after Oblate
Priests associated with both Colleges.
The Oblate Cup is awarded to the College
which has won the most shields overall.

at the Oblate Cup – for more photos and full
