CBC Racing Newsletter A look back as we race ahead… 2nd Quarter 2010

A few years ago, Tim Hughes and his daughter Sidney watched with admiration as teams of bike racers from around the state battled it out along the streets of the capitol campus. An experienced club rider, Tim was taking in the fanfare of the Capitol Criterium from the sidelines that year and was immediately intrigued by the teamwork and strategy playing out in front of his eyes. What would it take to race with those guys?

The answer? A few simple words of encouragement from his young daughter.

“You could do that,” she said with confidence.

As it turns out, yes, he could. And he would.

What neither of them realized, however, was that just a few years later, Tim would not only have evolved from spectator to racer, he would also finish the 2010 Capitol Criterium as the Masters Men C State Champion. And Sidney would be there to see it all unfold. In retrospect, it was only fitting that after three months of nonstop racing all across the state, the Olympia Orthopaedic Associates Cycling team would finish out an extremely successful (albeit grueling) second quarter by defending its home turf at the Capitol Criterium and Boston Harbor Circuit Race, both state championship events in 2010. Of the team's eleven podium finishers, five racers earned the title of State

Champion that weekend. Tom Potter (Masters Men D) and Tim Hughes (Masters Men C) took home gold medals in Saturday's Capitol Criterium, and Brad Halstead (Masters Men A), Jamie Stewart (Masters Men C) and Tom Potter (Masters Men D again!) captured the gold during Sunday's circuit races out at Boston Harbor. The truth is, there isn’t nearly enough room on the pages of this newsletter to document each and every Oly Ortho success over the past three months. You can read about OOA’s top five finishes in the side bars, or even go to the WSBA website to review Oly Ortho’s 112 top ten finishes during April, May and June. Missing from these stats, however, are the many stories of selfless teamwork behind each of these individual successes. To name just a few… There was the Glenwood Circuit Race where Jason Celestine, Tim Hughes, Kyle Anderson, Will Brickler, Adam Cramer and Eric Brickler worked for

teammate Vaughn Nelson’s solo victory in the 77-person Cat 4/5 men’s field. At the Fremont Criterium, Andrea Casebolt worked with new Cat 4 teammate Kat Meckle to secure two top ten finishes and keep Kat in the running for the Cascadia Crit Series title. Despite two crashes, Kat worked with her new team to ultimately take sixth in the series. And when asked about his recent victory at the Capitol Criterium, Tom Potter attributed his success to the support from his teammates in the pack (Scott Torkelson, Dave Gordon, Brian Wentz, Jim Holbrooks and Roger Giebelhaus) as well as the rest of the OOA contingent cheering loudly from the sidelines.

TEAMWORK (continued from page 2) If you own a TV, chances are you witnessed more than a few stages of this year’s Tour de France in which the HTC-Columbia train led out Mark Cavendish to a stage-winning sprint or the Saxo Bank and Astana boys did an incredible amount of work on the front to keep their yellow-clad teammates out of trouble. While it is undoubtedly an amazing sight to behold in glamorous Versus HD, it is even better experienced first-hand - not from the sidelines, but rather, from the middle of the peloton, next to your own teammates. With roughly four weeks left of the 2010 road racing season, there is still plenty of time to get out there and work together. Tuesday and Thursday rides are still going strong and provide an excellent opportunity to work on your team racing strategies. These team rides leave from Tumwater Falls Park at 5:30pm. Please contact your category representative if you have any questions. It’s time to get out there and work together to finish this season on an even higher note than it started!

Amazing things can happen when you’ve got ten teammates looking after you in a road race. Just ask Jim Holbrooks about his victory at Olympic View back in early April. Don’t be surprised if he winces when you bring this up. Sometimes winning can be a sore subject. Especially when you cross the finish line with a separated shoulder. As Jim explains, Oly Ortho went into the race looking to attack and counter attack, using the team’s numbers to their advantage to tire out the rest of the field. Jason Celestine was the first to break away, and when he was finally reeled in towards the end of the first 18-mile lap, Jim launched a counter-attack of his own, hoping to stay away long enough for Jason and the others to recover and then take over. With his teammates controlling the pace of the peloton, however, Jim soon found himself halfway through the last lap with a healthy lead. Each time he looked back, half expecting to be caught, there was nobody there. Forced to adjust his original game plan, he put his head down and focused on keeping his speed up. Much to his surprise, Jim approached the final downhill, right-hand hairpin turn with a comfortable four-minute lead. Fatigued from a long morning of time-trialing off the front, however, he reacted to the corner late, tapped his brakes in an attempt to slow down and suddenly found himself crashing to the ground in absolute pain. Brian Koder, who was photographing that corner, immediately ran over to make sure his teammate was okay. Jim was alert and – most of all – angry with himself for going down on the turn. Still focused on the finishing the race, he asked Brian to help straighten out the handlebars and place the chain back on the bike. Unable to put pressure on his right arm, Jim somehow managed to get back on the saddle, clipped in and continued to pedal for another mile, eventually holding on for a 45-second victory over the pack. Despite suffering a separated shoulder that kept him off his bike for a good portion of the early racing season, Jim still considers the Olympic View Road Race a true team success, attributing his victory to the all the hard work the team did to control the pack. “It's races like that that make me willing to work my ass off for my teammates. If one of them wins, we all win. And we have had a lot of masters winning this year.”

If you were living in the Olympia area in early 2001, chances are you still remember what you were doing when the ground shook at 10:54am on Wednesday, February 28th. While the Nisqually earthquake is most remembered for the damage left in its wake, something truly positive did emerge from the destruction – Joy Ride Bikes.

South Sound businessman Min Lee, whose plans for a local indoor BMX park crumbled in the quake, decided to refocus his attention on the retail side of the bicycle industry and in late 2002, opened a small shop on Lacey Boulevard.

Brandon Archibald, then president of CBC Racing, discovered the new shop while on a team ride and decided to approach Lee about sponsorship opportunities. The timing couldn’t have been better for either party, as CBC Racing was in desperate need of consistent equipment support, and Lee, a Specialized dealer, was eager to get involved with a local race team.

The first team order consisted of 25 frames, and Brandon’s brother Derik, who had previously worked as a bike mechanic in Idaho and Texas, would build them up. An accomplished racer working on his college degree, Derik later accepted a part-time job at Joy Ride in 2003, unaware of where this path would ultimately take him.

In 2007, after five years in the retail bicycle industry, Lee was ready to move on to his next endeavor and began searching for a buyer for the business. He didn’t have to look far. By that time, Derik had finished college, was starting to get burnt out from constant racing and – along with partner Michelle Kautzmann – was looking for a new venture of his own.

The two of them purchased Joy Ride in November 2007. The kid that once agreed to build the bikes in exchange for team sponsorship back in 2003 now owned the shop. Derik and Michelle were the sponsors. And as time went on, their support of local bike racing grew as they continued to sponsor CBC Racing on the road and eventually partnered with Friends of Capitol Forest (http://friendsofcapitolforest.org/) to sponsor GL6 Racing, a mountain bike team named after Capitol Forest’s highly-touted Green Line #6 trail.

With increased exposure, the shop’s client base continued to grow, attracting roadies, BMX racers, knobby tire enthusiasts, commuters, weekend warriors and everything in between. It was soon obvious that Joy Ride was outgrowing its crowded 1,400-square-foot storefront. To meet demand, employees were building bikes in Derik and Michelle’s garage.

Among them was 21-year-old Luke Brechwald, a professionally licensed mountain bike racer with two 24-hour national titles under his belt. Certified by the United Bicycle Institute (UBI) as a 15-year-old, Luke was no stranger to the inner workings of a bike shop. He knew Derik from team rides and cyclocross races, and eventually accepted a part-time position at Joy Ride.

What Luke soon found out, however, was that adding a part-time job to his already busy life as an engineering student and bike racer was just too much. Something had to give.

So, while Derik and Michelle forged ahead with their plans to move into a larger location, Luke took some time away from the See > JOY RIDE, page 6

the shop to focus on his degree and wrap up the 2009 racing season. In December, as Derik and Michelle were getting ready to relocate into a new 4000-square-foot location at the corner of Lacey Boulevard and Ruddell Road, Luke stopped by to see the progress and offer a helping hand while on his winter break. The new location was taking shape, but it was obvious that Derik – who was playing professional bike mechanic at the old shop during the day and amateur carpenter to get the new shop set up at night – needed help. It didn’t take a lot of convincing. Luke was ready and willing to join the team, this time as a partner in the business. While so much has changed from the time when they were building bikes in Derik and Michelle’s garage, deep down, the core of Joy Ride has remained the same. “We ask ourselves, ‘What kind of bike store do I want to walk into?’” says Brechwald. “That’s the environment we want to create.” When it comes down to it, the owners of Joy Ride are just three people who love to ride bikes. None of them have a business background – they have had to learn as they go and adapt. “Our business progresses because of a pull rather than a push,” says Archibald, “We don’t want to try to force our ideas or our concepts on anyone. Our goal is to keep a loose vision of what people want and let those ideas pull us.” Derik hesitates for a moment and then smiles. “And I think we have done that really well.”

Racer Spotlight: Jennifer Burtner

As an emergency room doctor, Jennifer Burtner is used to reacting to high-pressure situations on little or no sleep. As a matter of fact, some of Jen’s best race results have come after pulling an all-nighter in the ER. “Jen will do anything for her teammates,” says Sarah Clark-Sandine. “Even if she has worked all night, she’ll let you pick her up in the morning – coffee in hand, of course – work for you during the race, and then lead you out in the final sprint. She only sleeps after the race is over.” Now in her third year of road racing, Jen’s commitment to her teammates’ success remains unchanged, despite the fact that she is currently the only Cat 2 racer on the women’s squad – the first in CBC team history. “Michelle and Sarah helped me (to upgrade) at the beginning of the year. I would like to now help them in races where we have combined fields.” At last month’s Capitol Criterium, Jen was able to return the favor, working in tandem with Michelle to wear out the Masters A field and ultimately boost teammate Sarah to a second-place finish. Although Jen joined CBC Racing in 2008, she is no stranger to competition. She began running marathons in 1996, has completed six Ironman-distance triathlons and was the 3rd woman across the finish line in the 2005 Ultraman World Championships, a three-day endurance event that involved 6.2 miles of swimming, 261.4 miles on the bike and 52.4 miles of running. If you haven’t noticed, there is not a lot that scares this woman – she tends to tackle new challenges with a smile. After

moving to Olympia in 2006, Jen discovered Capitol Forest and set out to buy a mountain bike. Her first race on knobby tires was in 2008 after Michelle convinced her to try the more experienced sport category at Lake Padden. “I thought I might die,” she laughs at the memory, still smiling. And yet, it didn’t stop her. After surviving the steep single track of Lake Padden, Jen went on to tackle the 2009 Cascade Cream Puff, a 100-mile (yes, you read that correctly) mountain bike pain-fest with over 18,000 feet of elevation gain. And still she wasn’t done. With a little encouragement from teammate Brandee Era-Miller, Jennifer decided to give cyclocross a try in 2009. Instead of starting out at the entry level, however, Jen jumped into the sport head-first and began her ‘cross career racing with the Cat 3 women. “I had never heard of cyclocross before Brandee (introduced me to it). She made it sound like so much fun. And it is….most of the time!” So what is next for The Jengine? How about 100 Alpine passes over ten days? This September, Jen will be joining teammates Steve Jones, Bill Scheidt, Melody Mayer, Tim Smith and a handful of other elite climbers for the annual Cent Cols Challenge, a ten-day event in the French Alps that will include over 4,000 meters of daily elevation gain. Is she ready for this challenge? “I guess I better get climbing!” And once again…she smiles.
