CBLA 2016 | Mini Guide to Seattle | Page 1 of 4 No claim to original photo copyright(s) “My Seattle” by Dainen Penta Welcome Collaborative Bar Leadership Academy class of 2016, CBLA alumni, and friends! All of us look forward to welcoming you to our beautiful city. Seattle was named after the Duwamish tribal leader Chief Sealth. Our geography and natural resources are defining features of the city and the region. The greater Seattle-Tacoma area is home to about 3.7 million people, or just over half of Washington state’s population. Landing at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (“Sea-Tac”) you’ll catch your first glimpses of Seattle’s water, mountains, and hills. Our hometown airline Alaska Airlines (alaskaair.com) offers daily nonstops from major U.S. cities including Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Detroit, Denver, Fort Lauderdale, Honolulu, Houston, Kansas City, Minneapolis, New Orleans, San Francisco, St. Louis, Phoenix, Raleigh, and Washington DC. Alaska’s inflight service includes on- board meals by Northwest celebrity chef Tom Douglas, regional craft liquors, microbrews, and wines, and of course, Starbucks coffee. Sound Transit light rail trains take about 30-40 minutes to reach downtown from the airport ($3 one way, soundtransit.org). The airport station is a short (covered) walk from the terminal. Taxis run about $40 or so; shared shuttle rides (including the Downtown Airporter) are a bit less, and limos or towncars a bit more. Rideshare services Lyft & Uber pick up from the 3 rd floor of the parking garage. Getting Around. A typical Seattle tourist agenda includes Pike Place Market (a short stroll from the Monaco), exploring the waterfront & piers, a visit to the Space Needle at Seattle Center, historic Pioneer Square, and a Mariners, Sounders, or Seahawks game. Bring your comfortable walking shoes to traverse Seattle’s hills. And ask your hotel concierge for the free “Seattle Tourmap” that highlights major landmarks and attractions. Getting a Bed. Take the light rail to the University Street station, the nearest stop to Hotel Monaco Seattle, the CBLA host hotel (1101 4 th Avenue, between Spring and Seneca streets). Exit the University Street station and walk uphill to 4 th . Other hotels that are a part of Seattle history include the Arctic Club (originally a Klondike Gold Rush-era private men’s club), The Edgewater (featured in Northern Exposure, plus the Beatles stayed here); the Mayflower Park (purchased & renovated by a lawyer), and the Sorrento Hotel (1909 Italianate on First Hill; recently renovated and allegedly haunted).
