UNDERGRADUATEWe recommend that all undergraduate programmes book a library presentationat the very beginning of the 1st semester.

GRADUATEIntroductions are plannedwith a view to the students´current level of skills and make allowance for students who completedtheir undergraduate studies outside of CBS as well as exchange students.

DIPLOMA/MASTER/MBAThe introductions will begeared specifically to professionals who perhaps need to be reintroduced to basic study skills.

Introductions

OUTCOMEThe introductions will ensurethat all students have a general knowledge of libraryresources and services so as to be able to benefit from them in the course of theirdegree.

They will be introduced to key search features that will help them in their own information and literature research process

METHODLecture

CONTENTSThe introductory sessions provide students with a basic understanding of CBS Library resources and services.

Introductions are kept brief, typically 15-20 minutes, and we recommend that they arescheduled for the verybeginning of bothundergraduate and graduatelevels.

Introductions to CBS Library and its services as central resources in the life of CBS students and to places to explore and manage literature and data.We recommend that the introductions are closely linked to the general introductory activities of the programmes.

”My experience working with librarians in my executive master classes (MPA) is verypositive as the students do not fullyunderstand the breadth of resources available from the library.

The librarians know exactly how to adapt one hour of instruction to fit the needs of thestudents”

NANNA MIK-MEYERProfessor MSO Department of Organization (IOA)

CONTENTSTopics are identified in close dialogue with the lecturer and can include in-depth introduction to academic information retrieval and how to plan and execute an efficient search strategy, source criticism, ethical referencing, and introductions to library tools.

It is also possible to opt for a case-based approach or to focus on specific types of information, e.g. market data, company information, legal sources etc.

If students have been subjected to library instruction on a previous occasion, we will of course take that into consideration and plan with a view to progression.

OUTCOMEConfidence conductingsystematic research.

Knowledge of selecteddatabases as well as anunderstanding of where tofind different types ofInformation.

Understanding of how toapply sources in an ethicalway and an ability to assesssource quality.

All instruction will be based on the themes and problems facing the students at the time of delivery. For the best results instruction should be scheduled in close proximity to the first major assignment requiring independent research

Custom tailored

WE RECOMMENDThat relevant cases anddatabases are identified inclose cooperation with the lecturer

METHODLecture or workshop, accompanied by onlineactivities if relevant.

“One of the priorities in my Business Research Methodology course is to alert students to the world class resources of the CBS Library by providing hands-on experience in literature search and data retrieval.

This is made possible by the generous and flexible cooperation of the library staff, who over the years have designed and delivered customized training modules, geared to these objectives and the needs of the students.”

LARS HÅKANSONProfessor, Department of International Economics and Management (INT)BSc (IB)

OUTCOMEAn understanding of the compositional principles of academic writing.

An understanding of the nature of academic discourse as a conversationamong knowledgeable people.

A hands-on introduction to the literature databases, including citation databases.

Instruction in the how and why of proper referencing.

An invitation to train these abilities through daily practice.

CONTENTSRegardless of their long-term career goals, university students are also scholars in training. As part of their professional competences, they should acquire a set of basic academic skills that revolve around the reading and writing of research papers

The Craft of Research modules bring together instruction in the use of the library databases with instruction in writing academic texts.

The modules include a demonstration of the core literature databases that the library provides access to and an approach to academic composition that has been tested at all levels of higher education.

Integration of academic writing and research skills.

WE RECOMMENDThese modules can be tailored to all levels, but we recommend that programs include them as early as possible.

Ideally, two two-hour modules will be prepared in collaboration between CBS Library and the course instructors and will focus on the requirements of a particular upcoming assignment.

TEACHING METHODLecture with demonstrations

DURATION2 x 2 hrs. (or as agreed)

”By now the HD SCM programme has made use of librarians as an integral part of our students projectwork for many years and with great success..

When starting up our first year Business Project it is important that our students are introduced, in a thorough and targeted way, to the research tools and services that are available through CBS Library. The librarians have assisted in this process by tailoring a basic information retrieval and reference management workshop specifically for the programme.

Our students are very happy with this extra service. The integration of library skills directly into the projectprocess boosts the methodological compentencies of our students throughout their degree.”

KIM SUNDTOFT HALDAssociate Professor, Department of Operations ManagementProgramme Director HD 2 SCM

”Novel and interesting insights are oftenpublished in the research-based articles thatare available from the CBS Library articledatabases.

In our experience, students are not veryconfident navigating the databases and wehave greatly benefitted from the instructionprovided by the library at the start of a new course.”
