CONCEPT AND THEME

The concept that I’ve chosen is related to architecture which is people and spaces.

The main reason why I’ve chosen that is because I would like to explore more about the how

people nowadays interact with limited spaces around them and the different variety of

people that they have to encounter every day. Initially, I opt to choose “congestion” as my

theme because according to my seniors, lecturers really liked us to focus on the lifestyle of

people and so that is why I’ve chosen to focus on “congestion” as my initial theme and the

place that I’ve plan to visit and take my photos at is located at Jalan Bukit Bintang, Kuala

Lumpur where all the popular shopping mall is located at and it is congested with cars and

people 24/7.

After several meetings with my tutor, Ms. Dee. I was advised to change my theme

because I cannot seem to picture and photograph the definition of “congestion” well enough

and my pictures does not display the feeling of congestion. After several advice and

consultation, Ms. Dee advised me to change my theme into “Bazaar” because most of my

photos were taken at a Bazaar street which to her, pictures the life and atmosphere being in

a Bazaar well enough. The Bazaar that I’ve visited is located at Lorong Tuanku Abdul

Rahman, Kuala Lumpur.

I was accompanied by one of my friend Ken Wong Chun Tim during my visit and

we’ve visited the location twice for almost 12 hours accumulatively. I successfully took some

acceptable shots and edited it to make it look more vivid. Plus, I’ve also gathered reliable

information about the place from reliable source and website.

RESEARCH

As a street not known by many, I’ve discovered my treasure chest of photos

and culture unknown to many. Lorong Tuanku Abdul Rahman is certainly a hidden treasure

of culture and a place for shopping. It is located near station Masjid Jamek and a 15-20

minutes’ walk from the station and it is very easily discovered by the crowd and people

along the street shouting about their offers and price. The place could be crowded most of

the time and mainly it is congested with cars along the road and the weather there is rather

hot because of the hectic life nearby a city center.

Many bazaars can be seen along Lorong

Tuanku Abdul Rahman, indoors and outdoors

as well. From what I’ve observed from my visit

there, most of the indoors bazaar sells art

crafts such as handmade hats and rolls of silk

and other cloth material, as for the outdoors

bazaar, most of them sell food and beverages.

It is more likely to be quite similar as Pasar

Malam but it is operating at different hours.

From the picture beside, congestion of

cars can be seen along the blue highlighted

road because there are a lot of school and high rise departments nearby that could cause

the amount of congestion that it is facing now. It also depends on what time you arrive but

since 8:00 A.M in the morning it will start to congest and dissipate after 4:00P.M in the

afternoon. Typical city life.

During the train ride to Station Masjid Jamek.

15-20 minutes’ walk to Lorong Tuanku Abdul Rahman, Around 11:00A.M

and it has started to be congested with vehicles.

Types of item sold at the bazaar.

This is a demonstration of sand art which is located inside an

indoor bazaar near Lorong Tuanku Abdul Rahman. The artist

uses sand and grain that has a variety of colours and how he

does it is he precisely drains the sand into a small glass bottle layer by layer and then uses

some kind of compressor to push the layer of sand firmly together. At first I could not see what he

was doing but after several minutes, the pictures start to

form inside the glass bottle and this inspired me to discover more in terms of art and architecture.

Because of the rich culture heritage around Lorong Tuanku Abdul Rahman, many different races unite together and created a work of art with different combination of food and clothes sold as well as hand bag that could not be missed out.

Wise space management

The vendors there have very strategic mind

because they are able to cramp as much products

available into their limited space and still able to

continue their business butter smoothly.

Many different culture lived together for a long time, and as

vendors they are used to communicating in as many language as possible in order to

persuade the customer.

They are also very friendly and frequently

allow me to take pictures of them

without any restrictions.

DESIGN IDEAInspire by samples that I’ve found online, I was inspired to create a cover page in the form of abstract and oblivious because this Lorong Tuanku Abdul Rahman seemed to be oblivious and unknown to many but once you have discovered it inside out, it becomes a treasure of cultural heritage and findings.

LAYOUT

I’ve left some borders around the edges to make it look more like a postcard rather than a photo and added a quote behind to occupy the receiver. Beside the white border brings out the photo vividly and gives it a more organized and vivid look.

SAMPLES

This is the cover page for my packaging highlighting the Malaysian culture in the word Bazaar which

brings in a whole new meaning.

CONCLUSIONLittle did I know about the hidden treasure amongst the skyline of Kuala Lumpur, I

thought I’ve seen it all but it is just a glimpse of what is out there for me to explore and

venture. This assignment had open my eyes wide and gave me a chance to explore the

hidden treasures of Kuala Lumpur that little did anyone know. Since now I’ve found a place

filled with cultural heritage and mixed society, I will continue my journey to venture out in

the open and seek for similar treasures that are waiting to be discovered and dug up.

Malaysia has been developing too fast in terms of the vacation industry, places are saturated

by tourist blindly following the tour guide and neglecting the beautiful unsung heroes and

places that made Malaysia as it is now, filled with culture, tradition, colours, and closeness

but most important of all unity.
