Predictive Modelling and Stellarator Physics: Roadmap Objectives 2 and 4

Relevant expertise: W. Kernbichler (TU Graz)

• Numerical evaluation of neoclassical toroidal viscosity due to non-resonant magnetic perturbations, using the drift kinetic equation solver NEO-2

• NEO-2 is now capable now of modelling electron cyclotron current drive (ECCD) ´ efficiency in tokamaks fast and with reasonable CPU times

• NEO-2 is also suitable for stellerator modelling (higher dimensionality) with reasonable CPU times. Therefore NEO will also be used for the computation of

• ECCD in W7-X in co-operation with IPP Greifswald.

Relevant expertise: A. Kendl, R. Schrittwieser (Univ. Innsbruck), F. Aumayr (TU Wien)

Density morphology in a simulation using the code GEMR, including profiles and turbulence in a single dependent variable (left) in quiescent phases and (centre) during a burst. Right: An ELM crash scenario as an extreme form of burst phenomenon, driven by a long-wave MHD instability which then saturates on self-generated micro-turbulence (A. Kendl et al., Univ. Innsbruck).
