Transforming Ambivalence:
Combining I-Ching Philosophy and Motivational Interviewing
Wei-Jen Chen* Yung-Jong Shiah Kuan-Hsu Chen
Abstract
Motivational interviewing (MI) is a psychological intervention model aimed at
preparing an individual for behavioral change. The core issue in MI is dealing with
ambivalence, and basic treatment principles include expressing empathy, developing
discrepancy, rolling with resistance, and supporting self-efficacy, which essentially
envelops much western individualism. However, with the obvious difference between
Western, which regards ambivalence as diametrical, and Chinese culture, which greatly
values harmony, wholesale application of Western treatment principles to individuals
accustomed to Chinese lifestyle would result in unfavorable outcomes. Harmony is a focal
concern in Chinese culture, and the core of I-Ching. In I-Ching, life meanings and wisdoms
such as introspection, yin-yang opposition and harmony, destiny and simplicity are
unique Chinese life philosophies. A local counseling model that applies the essence of
Chinese philosophy to ambivalent transformation in MI could be constructed to help people
in Chinese societies overcome ambivalence. We hope that such an attempt can help develop
localized psychological counseling and motivate more discussion.
