The Musical Theatre Program at CCM has had three leaders in its forty year history: Jack Rouse, who founded the program, Worth Gardner, the director of its middle years, and Aubrey Berg, who currently holds the chairmanship.

JACK ROUSE (1968-1973) came to CCM to create the first collegiate Musical Theatre program after completing his doctorate at the University of Michigan. A historian once said, “Things happen when the world is ready for them” and in the midst of the turbulence of the late 60’s and early 70’s, the world of musical theatre was ready for a world-class training program. Jack and his colleagues Helen Laird, Bruce Fisher and Oscar Kosarin made it happen, setting a standard for other programs around the world. After establishing a solid foundation for the program, Jack left CCM to create Jack Rouse Associates, a highly successful organization that conceives, visualizes and realizes exceptional visitor experiences around the world. In 2008, he was awarded the themed entertainment industry’s highest award, the Thea, for lifetime achievement. In addition to his professional work, Jack serves on the Board of Trustees for many organizations, including the Cincinnati Zoo, the Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, and the Cincinnati Central City Development Corporation, Downtown Cincinnati Inc. He was also the founding chairman for the Port of Greater Cincinnati Development Authority. WORTH GARDNER (1973-1985), a graduate of the California Institute of the Arts and Carnegie-Mellon University, led the Musical Theatre program for more than a decade while forging highly productive collaborations with James Truitte, Oscar Kosarin, Paul Shortt, Suellen Childs, Steven Waxler and Scot Woolley. His love of teaching gave him a rich sense of artistic fulfillment at CCM. Gardner next assumed the role of Artistic Director of the Playhouse in the Park, Cincinnati’s award winning regional theatre. Gardner has directed throughout the country including Actors Theatre of Louisville, The New York Shakespeare Festival and The Trinity Square Repertory Company. He is a winner of the Post-Corbett Award and Great Britain’s prestigious Elgar prize for his original composition BASS EVOLUTION, a commission for the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. Worth currently lives in San Francisco and continues his work as a writer, including Sing Hallelujah!, in collaboration with Donald Lawrence. AUBREY BERG (1987-Present) has headed the Musical Theatre program for the past twenty-two years. He has directed extensively for both professional and educational theatres, with productions ranging from the classics to new plays, from musical theatre to dramatic works. He holds a PhD in Theatre Arts from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana and has studied at the Bristol Old Vic, the British Drama League and the British Council at Stratford-upon-Avon. His work has received a DALRO Award Citation, Joseph Jefferson Award Citations, Obelisk Awards for Excellence in the Performing Arts, Post-Corbett Award nominations, Cincinnati Entertainment Awards and Acclaim Citations. He is the first holder of the Patricia A. Corbett Distinguished Chair of Musical Theatre and served as Artistic Director of CCM’s award winning summer repertory, Hot Summer Nights, for seven years. He is delighted to have graduates working on Broadway, Off-Broadway, in national and international tours, and in every aspect of the entertainment industry.

PRODUCER

CCM 6

PRODUCER’S NOTEI arrived at CCM in the fall of 1984, which turned out to be a year of considerable transition for programs in OMDA Division. Not only did the legendary head of the Opera Department, Italo Tajo, announce his retirement, but 1984-1985 also marked Worth Gardner’s final year as Chair of the Department of Musical Theatre. Two iconic figures were leaving UC in one year, and there were concerns that the programs would never find individuals to replace them. Flash forward to 2009. I am delighted to report that the Opera Department retains its preeminent place among training programs, with worthy successors to Italo found in Malcolm Fraser, Sandra Bernhard and, currently, Robin Guarino. And Musical Theatre? Well, does an applicant pool of nearly 800 each year and a placement rate of its graduates into the highest echelons of the profession suggest that it, too, has maintained its status as the nation’s most highly regarded program? While I can now look back with some fondness on the time Jeff Saver and I tried to keep the ship afloat during the search process following Worth’s departure, I was thrilled (and relieved) when Aubrey Berg was named Chair of the program and have watched in awe the work that he, Diane Lala, Terry LaBolt (retired) and Roger Grodsky have accomplished over the intervening years. I don’t think it hyperbole to state that the art of musical theatre in the United States today has been incalculably improved because of the contributions made by graduates and alumni of this program, and I am proud to have played some small part in its distinguished history. Here’s to the next 40 years! -R. Terrell Finney, Jr. Producer, Head/Division of Opera, Musical Theatre, Drama, Arts Administration, Theatre Design and Production

ABOUTHAIR is a slender threadlike outgrowth of the epidermis of an animal. “I want it long, straight, curly, fuzzy, snaggy, shaggy, ratty, matty, oily, greasy, fleecy, shining, gleaming, streaming, flaxen, waxen, knotted, polka-dotted, twisted, beaded, braided, powered, flowered, and confettied, bangled, tangled, spangled, and spaghettied.”

FROM THE ORIGNAL STAGE DIRECTIONS FOR HAIR Marshall McLuhan describes today’s world as a “global village.” And today’s youth is involved in group tribal activity. So HAIR should be a group tribal activity. An extension of what’s happening. A coming-together for a common reason: a search for a way of life that makes sense to the young, that allows the growth of their new vision, however defined or undefined that may be; to find an alternative to the unacceptable standards, goals, and morals of the older generation, the establishment. (No matter that their task may never be accomplished, or that it may.) It’s what’s happening now. The tribes are forming, establishing their own way of life, their own morality, ideology, their own mode of dress, behavior; and the use of drugs, by the way, has a distinct parallel in ancient cultures, in tribal spiritual tradition, both East and West. The Kids are a tribe. At the same time they know they are on a stage of a theatre, performing for an audience, demonstrating their way of life, in a sense, telling a story, in order to persuade those who watch of their intentions, to perhaps gain greater understanding, support, and tolerance, and thus perhaps expand their horizons of active participation toward a better, saner, peace-full, love-full world.

Dear Friends:

Friends of CCM are advocates, fans and volunteers who love the performing and media arts. Our support extends beyond sitting in the audience. For more than 25 years, we have helped students achieve their dreams by providing scholarship support. I invite you to join the 600 or so Friends of CCM and help even more talented students. Our contributions create scholarship opportunities throughout CCM’s undergraduate, graduate and preparatory divisions. We also support career development grants, master classes and ensemble travel.

CCM is one of the nation’s leading music conservatories. In its most recent rankings, US News and World Report ranked Cincinnati sixth nationally among university programs for pursuing a graduate music degree. Its voice program was ranked third, and its conducting program was ranked fifth.

The support we provide is critical to maintain an edge in the competitive world of higher education. CCM is at a disadvantage because we cannot provide full scholarships to all students. Now more than ever your membership will help us attract the brightest and most talented students.

Please consider becoming a Friend of CCM by completing the membership form on page 22 or calling 513-556-2100. Join online at www.giveto.uc.edu by selecting College-Conservatory of Music and clicking on Friends of CCM. Your support will help educate our future stars.

Warm regards,

Dianne Rosenberg, President Friends of CCM
