investing in Breakthroughs

Every three minutes, another Canadian is faced with fighting cancer. That’s why – empowered by our volunteers and donors – the Canadian Cancer Society is working tirelessly to do everything we can to prevent cancer, save lives and support people living with cancer. With your support, we are making more impact against more cancers, in more communities, than any other cancer charity in Canada. Thank you for supporting our Lottery and joining the fight against cancer.

thE nEED

• There are more than 200 different types of cancer and research is key in the fight to eradicate cancer and enhance the lives of those living with cancer.

• Every three minutes, another Canadian is faced with fighting cancer.

• Childhood cancer, although rare, is the leading cause of death from disease in Canadian children over one month of age, second only to accidents.

hOW WE arE FiGhtinG Back

• The Society’s annual research grant competition brings together scientific experts from around the world to help outsmart cancer by selecting the ‘best of the best’ projects and pointed out gaps in cancer research and opportunities in the cancer fight.

• The Society is investing more than $41 million in research across Canada that include research aimed at better prevention, earlier detection, improved treatments and enhanced quality of life.

• Last year in Ontario, 130 research projects received funding and over 750 cancer patients were enrolled into Society-funded clinical trials.

thE iMPact

• The Society’s investment in research is producing significant victories. For instance, incidence and death rates for most types of cancer have stabilized or declined during the past decade.

• Research has also led to considerable progress in cancers that affect the youngest Canadians:

• Childhood cancer death rates have declined by about 50 per cent since 1985.

• The five-year survival rate for childhood cancer is now 82 per cent, an 11 per cent increase over the last 15 years.

100% of the net proceeds from our Lottery go to support the best cancer

research projects across canada.

The Canadian Cancer Society funds the full spectrum of research: from causes of cancer and prevention to treatment and palliative care. This research takes place across the country and involves all types of cancer, so everybody benefits in the fight against cancer, because of you.

Fighting colorectal cancer – Dr. Jill Tinmouth, TorontoColorectal cancer is the 2nd leading cause of cancer-related death. Improving the quality of colonoscopy is crucial to detecting and preventing colorectal cancers. With funding from the Canadian Cancer Society, Dr. Tinmouth hopes her research will establish a standardized delivery of high-quality colonoscopy services across the country.

Fighting breast cancer – Dr. Lisa Porter, WindsorResearch helps us understand how cancer develops. Canadian Cancer Society-funded researcher Dr. Lisa Porter has identified a protein that triggers cells to multiply rapidly and could lead to the development of breast cancer. Dr. Porter is studying this protein in greater depth to improve early detection and treatment of breast cancer.

Fighting prostate cancer – Dr. Jeremy Squire, KingstonProstate cancer is the most common cancer in Canadian men. On average, 470 Canadian men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer every week. With funding from the Canadian Cancer Society, Dr. Jeremy Squire has identified a gene that is associated with an aggressive group of prostate cancers and could improve the way prostate cancer is treated.

At just 12 years old, Brock Taraba of Niagara Falls is a veteran cancer survivor. Brock was diagnosed with high-risk acute lymphoblastic leukemia in 1998 when he was only 10 months old.

Brock’s doctors suggested that the family take advantage of a course of treatment that was newly available at the time, as research had shown it to be effective in treating the disease.

The treatment was seen as risky, because in addition to chemotherapy it involved radiation to the head, which could have caused some limitations to Brock’s future fine-motor, math and language skills, in addition to his future speech and physical growth. With few treatment options available, the family undertook the course of treatment in order to save Brock’s life.

Today, Brock is a healthy, self-sustaining pre-teen who is fully functional with some assistance. He loves bicycling, elephants, reading mystery books and playing video games with his brother.

Lori Taraba, Brock’s mother, is passionate about the role cancer research played in her son’s life. “My son is here because of the researchers who fight cancer every day,” says a grateful Lori. “Thanks to research, cancer is no longer a death sentence.”

In the years since Brock’s cancer experience, Lori has learned how research has further refined the way acute lymphoblastic leukemia is treated in children so that late effects associated with treatment are minimized.

From left to right: Lori Taraba, Brock Taraba and Dr. Lillian Sung, Canadian

Cancer Society researcher

How research helped us: the taraba family

the canadian cancer Society’s support of cancer research is possible only through the generosity of our donors and the support of our volunteers.
