HOME SWEET HOME AWAITS CONCORDIAAfter a disappointing road trip last weekend that saw the Golden Bears drop a pair of games that they led in late, the team returns home for a pair of teams tied for fi rst in the conference standings. The North Division opponents are MSU Moorhead and Northern State, each sporting 6-1 league records.

NAIL-BITERS PILING UPThe Golden Bears may be off to a slow start, but behind the numbers indicate a young team that is on the verge of a breakthrough. The team has had all nine losses decided by 10-points or less with a majority of those games coming down to the fi nal minutes and/or possessions. Concordia’s two wins were also close games, a 5-point win over Alaska-Fairbanks on a neutral fl oor, and a 6-point win over Waldorf at home.

LAST TIME OUT: TOUGH ROAD WEEKENDThe Golden Bears dropped two more single-digit losses on the road last weekend, falling at Wayne State (55-61) and Augsutana (66-67). They held leads of six with four minutes to play at Wayne State, and fi ve with under six minutes to play at Augustana in the tough losses.

On Friday at Wayne State, Concordia couldn’t hold a 53-47 lead with under four minutes to play as the Wildcats closed on a 14-2 run. After committing only nine turnovers in the fi rst 36 minutes, Concordia committed one each in the fi -nal four minutes and went 1-for-4 from the fl oor during that stretch. They were led by Terez VanPelt’s 13 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Nick Mabbutt added 10 points and three blocks off the bench.

On Saturday at Augustana, Terez VanPelt led the team with 19 points but his 15-foot game-winning jumper with 2.7 sec-onds to play was off the mark in a 67-66 loss. The Golden Bears started slow, falling behind 18-2, 24-7 and 34-16 in the fi rst half but would rally back to take 5-point leads twice in the second half thanks to a 19-4 run over a six-minute

stretch of basketball. During the run, Nick Mabbutt dropped in 10 of his 12 points off the bench including a pair of three-pointers.

Concordia held leads of 60-55 with 7:46 to play and 64-59 with 5:46 to play.

A pair of Isaiah Thomas free throws gave Concordia a 66-65 lead with just over four minutes to play but the Golden Bears didn’t score again the rest of the way, going 0-for-5 from the fl oor.

SERIES HISTORY: MSUM 14, CONCORDIA 9Entering the 24th meeting between the clubs, the Dragons lead the series 14-9 although Concordia has won six of the last nine meetings including four of the last fi ve at Gangel-hoff Center. Concordia is 7-5 all-time at home against MSU Moorhead as well.

LAST YEAR: CONCORDIA 84, MSUM 71In their lone meeting last year at Gangelhoff Center, Con-cordia won by double-digits, leading nearly the entire con-test including a large lead of 16 early in the second half to down the 18th-ranked Dragons, handing them their third loss in 16 games on the year.

Concordia had four players in double-fi gures led by Brent Barz’ double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Isaiah Thomas matched Barz’ 18 points by hitting four three-point-ers, while Peter Olafeso had 15 points and eight rebounds and Kenny Olafeso had 11 points. Cordell Smith (8), Cole Olstad (6) and Terez VanPelt (6) all added solid contribu-tions as well.

guably better start at 12-1 and are among the top teams receiving votes just outside of the NABC Top-25. Their posi-tion tied at the top of the NSIC Standings makes it a crucial mid-season road weekend, as they travel to #11 Minnesota State on Saturday.

MSUM’s only loss on the year is to travel partner Northern State, who also sports a 6-1 league record with its only loss being to St. Cloud State.

The Dragons feature the league’s top scorer in former Wi-nona State and Iowa Hawkeye standout Anthony Tucker. He’s averaging 20.8 points and is third in the league with 4.2 assists per game and is also an 88.1% foul shooter. While he gets to the line regularly, Tucker also hits from deep, ranking third in the league with 2.6 three’s per game and 12th at 43.6%.

The Dragons’ Alex Novak is the league’s rebounding leader at 8.9 per contest, while Tucker adds 5.6 for good measure.

MSU Moorhead is solid offensively, scoring 77.4 points to rank third in the league while allowing just 63.5 per game for the league’s third-ranked scoring margin at +13.8. They hit 50.3% from the fl oor as a team, and although Tucker is excellent at the line the team struggles there as a whole ranking 15th with a 68.3% rate.

Opponents shoot just 41.7% from the fl oor against the Dragon defense.

SERIES HISTORY: NORTHERN 23, CONCORDIA 5The teams will meet for the 29th time with all fi ve of Concor-dia’s wins against the Wolves coming at Gangelhoff Center where it is 5-7 against NSU all-time. CU has never won in Aberdeen in 16 prior trips west of the border. Concordia has won two of the last three meetings in St. Paul, and three of the last fi ve at home as well. Overall, NSU has picked up wins against Concordia in four of the last fi ve contests between the schools.

LAST YEAR: WOVLES SWEEP GOLDEN BEARSNorthern State picked up a couple of double-digit wins over Concordia, starting with an 85-70 win in St. Paul in early De-cember followed by an 86-59 win in Aberdeen in late Febru-ary in a critical game that was a set-back to Concordia’s NSIC Tournament hopes.

In the fi rst contest, Concordia opened up an early 10-point lead in the fi rst four minutes of play before Northern State took a 5-point lead at the break and wound up winning by 15. Kenny Olafeso led Concordia with 19 points and fi ve assists, while Isaiah Thomas added 12 points and seven rebounds and Terez VanPelt had 13 points. Collin Pryor led fi ve Wolves in double-fi gures with 16 points and 10 re-bounds, while Dustin Tetzlaff also added a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Seth Bachand scored 16 off the bench on 8-11 shooting.

In game two, Concordia turned a 3-point halftime defi cit into a 3-point lead early in the second half before NSU ran away with the game by scoring 55 second half points. Geoffrey

Firmin led all scorers with 29 for NSU, adding six assists, while Alex Thomas had 17 points for the Wolves. Concor-dia was led by Peter Olafeso’s 20 points, while Kenny Olafeso had 14 and Terez VanPelt had 10. Isaiah Thomas (7) and Cole Olstad (6) also contributed, but the rest of the team combined for just two points on 0-for-5 shooting.

SCOUTING THE WOLVESThe Wolves come to St. Paul after playing at 11th-ranked Minnesota State on Friday having played only two prior road games all season before this weekend trip - wins at U-Mary and Minot State on a December trip to North Dakota.

The Wolves have won four straight with three of those wins by at least 19 points. Last weekend, they beat Bemidji State (64-61) on Friday and Minnesota Crookston (66-47) on Sat-urday in Aberdeen.

They are led by reigning NSIC Player of the Week Collin Pryor, coming off a weekend averaging 16.5 points and 8.0 rebounds in the victories. His weekend included a career-high 25 points in the three-point win over Bemidji State. For the year, Pryor leads NSU with 15.0 points and 7.2 re-bounds per game and is 50-of-55 (.909) at the foul line.

IRON MEN LEADING THE GOLDEN BEARSSo far in 2012-13, Concordia has relied heavily on its three leading scorers: Terez VanPelt (19.5), Isaiah Thomas(12.6) and Cole Olstad (14.3). Not only have they been re-lied on to score, but to play big minutes. All three average at least 32 minutes per game and have taken over 60% of the team’s shots while accounting for 64.8% of the scoring. They have also made 59 of the team’s 74 three-pointers.

TEREZ VANPELT NOTESIn just his second year, Terez VanPelt has emerged as a star in the Northern Sun, ranked third in the league in scor-ing (19.5) and fourth in assists (4.1). He’s been consistent, scoring at least 13 points in every game while topping 20 six times. He’s also dished three assists or more in every game, and has three games with 20-plus points and 5-plus assists.

He’s knocked down 38.7% (12-31) from three-point range and averages 7.5 free throw attempts per game while mak-ing 79.3% at the stripe.

He earned NSIC Player of the Week honors over Holiday break for a 22-point, 5-assist performance in a non-confer-ence win over Waldorf College.

ISAIAH THOMAS NOTESOne of the top three-point shooters in school history, Isaiah Thomas is having his career year as a senior. He averages 12.6 points per game while making 39.1% from three-point territory. He’s fourth in the league with 2.45 three-pointers made per game, fi fth in minutes (34.09) and 19th in scoring.

He’s scored in double fi gures eight times and scored 15-plus four times. He’s made a three-pointer in every game including making fi ve three’s twice and four three’s once.

His top game was a 20-point, 11-rebound double-double

against Upper Iowa, his only 20-point game of the year and the team’s only double-double of the season.

In his career as a Golden Bear, Thomas is a 39.4% three-point shooter and averages 8.5 points over 89 games. He ranks fourth in career three-pointers made (153) and fi fth in percentage (39.4%). His playing time and scoring have increased each of his four years as a Division II player.

COLE OLSTAD NOTESSophomore Cole Olstad has had perhaps the best all-around start to the season on the team, averaging 14.3 points, a team-high 5.5 rebounds and 2.2 assists. He had to miss one game due to an illness, but has scored at least eight points in every game.

He’s had 5-plus rebounds eight times including a career-high 10 rebounds in a win over Alaska-Fairbanks. He scored a career-high 21 points in the season opener against Clarke, and topped that mark on Dec. 15 at SMSU with a new career-high 23 points.

His outside shooting has been solid, making two or more three’s seven times, and hitting at least one three in every game. He’s connecting at a 40.0% (20-50) clip from three-point range.

His shot has been consistent, as well, shooting between 10 and 14 fi eld goal attempts in all but one game, and at-tempting between four and seven three-pointers in all but one game.

BIG MAN ROTATIONConcordia’s front line is perhaps as deep as it’s ever been and the coaching staff have been utilizing the depth, versa-tility in the overall skill set and varying degrees of experi-ence to maximize early season match-ups while the post rotation works itself out.

The Golden Bears have started freshmen Mike Yahnke and Shea Mandli in each of the last fi ve games, while Nick Mabbutt has also started fi ve times and Taylor Steinbauer once.

Mabbutt leads the group statistically with 8.3 points and 3.7 rebounds in 19.3 minutes per game off the bench, while swatting a team-high 12 blocks. Mandli has averaged more playing time (23.0 minutes) and rebounds (5.2) while aver-aging 3.6 points.

CORDELL SMITH: FROM GRIDIRON TO HARDWOODJunior Cordell Smith made an immediate transition from football season to basketball season as a dynamic two sport athlete. He hasn’t missed a game and is averaging a career-high 15.4 minutes per game off the bench, with 3.7 points, 2.7 rebounds with seven assists and six steals.

Smith has clocked between 11 and 21 minutes in all but two games, scored in all but three games and had a three-game stretch with 5-plus rebounds per game. He’s scored eight or more points three times with a season-high nine points at Sioux Falls.

As a football player, Smith was a starting wide receiver for Concordia and led the team in receptions (43) and was sec-ond in receiving yards (627) and touchdowns (5). He was among the top-10 NSIC receiving leaders in receptions and yards for the fi rst nine games of the season and had a pair of 8-catch, 100-yard games that each came with a touch-down.

BACKCOURT BACKUPSWith Terez VanPelt and Cole Olstad rarely leaving the fl oor, its left the coaching staff with four backup guards to compete for important but limited backup minutes early on.

Freshman Demetrius Martin has emerged as a key pres-ence, factoring regularly into the rotation. Martin averages 14.2 minutes per game. In his career debut in Concordia’s third game of the season, Martin had six rebounds and four steals to help the Golden Bears to their fi rst victory against Alaska-Fairbanks.

Last weekend, Martin scored a career-high seven points on 3-5 shooting with two assists and two rebounds at Augus-tana. During the weekend, which also featured a road game at Wayne State, Martin had his top weekend as a college player by averaging 5.5 points, 2.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 2.0 steals while playing 20.5 minutes and shooting 5-8 from the fl oor.

Also factoring into the equation are junior Clay Olstad, senior Zach Towle and sophomore DJ Lewis. Olstad pro-vides a nice all-around skill set with ability to knock down perimeter shots, Towle is a three-point specialist and Lewis is more of a true point guard.

Lewis has earned the most consistent role of the thre play-ers as of late but as VanPelt’s backup, has only clocked double-digit minutes twice this season while playing in nine games.

80 IS THE MAGIC NUMBER FOR BOE’S TEAMSThe Golden Bears only topped 80 points in a game once this season, but also have only allowed 80-plus points twice.

Last season, when Concordia scored at least 80 points they were 10-2 while they posted an 11-4 record when they al-lowed under 80 points.

But they went just 2-12 when scoring under 80 and 1-10 when the opposition reached 80 or higher.

Since Kelly Boe has been head coach, Concordia is 40-11 when scoring at least 80 points, 15-1 when scoring 90-plus and 8-0 when scoring 100-plus.

When allowing 80 or more points under Kelly Boe, Concor-dia is 7-42. They are 3-11 when allowing 90-plus and are 1-1 when allowing over 100 points.

In games where both teams score 80-plus points, they are 7-11 all-time under Boe.

TURNOVER FREE IS THE WAY TO BE!The Concordia basketball team has been excellent at tak-ing care of the ball, averaging just 12.2 turnovers per game which ranks fi fth in the 16-team Northern Sun and 28th in the NCAA.

It’s been a consistent effort as well, as the squad has com-mitted 13 and under in nine of 11 games this season.

Assistant Coach2006- Concordia Univ. Head Coach

Kelly Boe has been head coach of the Golden Bears since the 2006-07 season and is now in his ninth year in the men’s basketball program entering the 2012-13 season. He has compiled a 93-84 overall record as head coach while producing a 66-61 mark in Northern Sun play.

The eighth head coach in the history of the men’s basketball program, Boe is the program’s all-time leader in winning percentage and his 93 wins rank third in school history.

Boe has led the Golden Bears to the upper tier of the Northern Sun by leading the team to host fi rst round NSIC Tournament games in three of his six years as head coach while only missing out on the 8-team

tournament once.

In his fi rst season as head coach, Boe led the Golden Bears to their best season in school history in 2006-07 and the best season at the Division II level with a 21-8 overall record. Concordia also had its best fi nish in the NSIC with a 13-5 overall mark and a tie for third in the fi nal conference standings.

The Golden Bears posted their second 13-win NSIC campaign in the 2010-11 season while picking up a number of key road victories along the way against perennial league powers Winona State, St. Cloud State and Minnesota State among others.

Prior to being named head coach of Golden Bear basketball in the summer of 2006, Boe spent the previous two years as the top assistant coach at Concordia. In those two years, Boe assisted in guiding the Golden Bears to back-to-back winning seasons and a com-bined 34-23 record.

Boe’s background includes three successful NCAA Division II assistant coaching runs with St. Cloud State University (1997-99), Minnesota State University, Mankato (2001-03) and Concordia University (2004-06).

In between his fi rst two NCAA DII stints, Boe had a two-year stop at Madison Area Techni-cal College, where he was an assistant for one season before taking over as head coach and guiding the squad to a Wisconsin Technical College League title in the 2000-01 sea-son.

He started his career at St. John’s University as an assistant coach where he was able to learn under Jim Smith, who is the all-time winningest collegiate basketball coach in the state of Minnesota.

Boe has a master’s degree in sports management from St. Cloud State and a Bachelor of Science in Education/Sports Management from St. John’s University, graduating from SJU in 1996.
