Superior Mat FinishManeuverability and dealing with tight corners is a commonchallenge for all asphalt compactors. Maneuvering on the mat tofinish a pass or follow a radius can often result in tearing thesurface. The Cat® CD54 with split drum design, permits tightturns and significantly reduces tearing so the operator is free toconcentrate on pattern accuracy and keeping up with the paver.

Exclusive Pod DesignThe exclusive axle-type pod design utilises tapered rollerbearings that support each drum half and eliminates anypotential for contact between the two halves. Dual seals providetwo layers of protection that prevent contamination and ensurelong-term performance. Oil bath lubrication delivers continuousrecirculation of oil inside the sealed housing, leading to longerservice intervals and lower operating costs.

Dual Amplitude/Dual FrequencyDual amplitude settings work efficiently in a wider range ofapplications. A switch at the operator station changes amplitudeand frequency is adapted. This simple setup eliminates theguess-work associated with vibratory selection.

Automated Vibratory ControlAn auto-vibe function allows the operator to determine when thevibratory system should engage upon starting out or whenchanging direction. Water Spray SystemThe Cat spray system provides redundancy in the system,ensuring reliable performance that keeps the machine on themat.

Hours of OperationThe single, 750 liter water tank provides hours of operationbetween refills. Spray can be set on continuous for maximumwetting action or intermittent for maximum duration betweenfill-ups. The sloping design provides excellent machinevisibility to the drum while the single fill point can beaccessed from the left side of the machine.

Excellent FiltrationKeeping the spray nozzles free of foreign particles is essentialto asphalt compaction. The Cat system provides triplefiltration that minimizes clogs. The filters are highlyaccessible and can be quickly removed for cleaning withoutthe use of special tools, limiting machine downtime.

Long-Life PumpsDual water pumps provide the necessary flow to the spraynozzles. During operation the pump usage alternates with thedirection of travel so that only one pump operates at a time.Alternating pump usage extends the operational life, whilelowering replacement costs.

Tight Turning Without TearingAn inside turning radius of 2.8 meters significantly increases themaneuverability of this high production asphalt compactor. Aneffective split drum propel system lets you use the tight turningradius without damaging the hot mat.

Wide Drum OffsetThe 1.3 meter drum offset provides more coverage for higherproduction on thin mats while minimizing heat loss prior tocompaction. Ease of operation is provided through fingertipcontrol at the propel lever for one handed operation. An audioalarm alerts the operator when the drums are aligned, allowingthe operator to concentrate on mat conditions.

Heavy-duty DesignThe thick steel fabrication used in production provides a strong,solid frame that resists flexing and holds up to the toughoperating conditions of asphalt compaction. The heavy-dutyconstruction optimizes vibratory efficiency by directing vibrationinto the mat, not through the machine frame as wasted energy.The frame features a unique center beam design that provideseasy access to engine and other main components. The robustfront and rear hitch articulation include maintenance free taperedroller bearings that are sealed and greased for life, leading toreduced service requirements and lower life-time operatingcosts.

Four Steering ModesThe CD54 features four steering modes: front, rear,coordinated front and rear and crab operation. Coordinatedsteering produces a 2.8 meter inside turning radius formaximum jobsite maneuverability.

Sensitive To The Touch SteeringThe benefit of electronic steering is combined with the feel ofhydraulic steering. When the drum encounters resistance,friction to the steering wheel increases, providing an intuitivefeel that is extremely beneficial when operating adjacent tovertical barriers and curbs or when the drum articulationreaches the end of travel during tight turns.1 Front Steering 2 Rear Steering 3 Coordinated Steering 4 Crab Operation (when in the maximum drum offset position

Balanced Torque and Proportional Speed ControlThe split drum drive system features an electronically actuatedtraction control that prevents unequal rotation of the drum halvesand assures balanced torque when going straight. To avoidtearing the mat in tight turns, the drum halves need to rotate atdifferent speeds. The split drum drive system utilizesmaintenance-free tapered roller bearings, for excellent reliability.The system also features speed sensing propel motors that allowadditional flow to the outside drum drive, ensuring proportionalspeed between the drum halves. The proportional speed iscontrolled by the steering angle and the ECM controller toensure balanced torque when turning.

Smooth OperationResponsive controls generate operator confidence and improveproductivity. Transmission

Drum Spray System

Entire drum spray system is corrosion-proof and includes a large water tankwith a single fill port and drain valve.

Self-adjusting spring-loaded scraperslocated on the front of each split drumand two scrapers fitted behind the splitdrums prevent material build-up and keepthe drums clean. The heavy-duty springsand molded polyurethane design maintainconsistent pressure across the entire drumwidth in order to maximize scraper wear.

Spray can be set on continuous formaximum wetting action or intermittentfor maximum duration between fill-ups.The “Auto” selection pulls water fromone pump traveling forward and from theother pump while traveling backward.The water spray system automaticallyshuts off when the machine is in neutral.

Instrumentation

The instrument panel is located in frontof the operator and contains thespeedometer, vibe tachometer, vibrationmode selector, water spray systemcontrols, light switches, hour meter,alternator indicator light, fuel gauge,warning lights and horn. An audiblealarm sounds and warning lightilluminates if abnormal conditions occurin engine oil pressure, engine coolanttemperature or charge pressure.Operational lights are also positioned onthe instrument panel. They illuminate ifthe vibratory system, drum spray system,neutral or parking brake are engaged.
