Experience & Qualifications
2. Experience & Qualifications
Experience & Qualifications
CDG’s experience in architectural design includes a variety of industries ranging from doctor’s offices and small offices to large call centers and corporate headquarters. CDG architects have experience in all phases of design including new construction, renovation, expansion, and historical preservation.
Master Planning and Programming In the planning and programming phases, we listen carefully to the present and future needs of the client. As previously mentioned, CDG architects also have the ability to understand the needs associated with different industries, and are able to quickly address these concerns with effective solutions.
Additions CDG architects have completed many additions projects for educational and corporate facilities. These projects have involved simple classroom additions, new food service facility additions, complete administrative suites, as well as theatrical and physical education department projects. CDG also has extensive experience in the addition of technology to existing facilities, both in terms of wireless and “hard-wire” technology installations.
New Construction CDG offers expertise in the development of a site for new construction, keeping ever mindful to design a project for future expansion. Throughout the years, we have developed working relationships with several civil, structural and MEP engineering firms to assist in the design of new construction projects. We understand the importance of communication while completing new construction projects in order to avoid confusion and error.

Renovation & Phasing CDG has extensive renovations and phasing experience with various building types. Many of these have been schools with time-sensitive schedules and complex phasing issues. As a result, CDG has a keen understanding of schedules and applies careful phasing and scheduling to every project, ensuring minimal disruption to each employee’s working environment. CDG’s renovation experience includes numerous projects for the following building types:
• Historical buildings, including Scanlan and 1001 McKinney buildings in Houston
• Educational facilities throughout the United States
• Corporate offices For each project, the scope of work included the following:
• Historic renovation/restoration
• Re-roofing
• New construction additions
• ADA upgrades
• Exterior building envelope repairs/upgrades
• HVAC system upgrades
• Window repair or replacement
• Life safety component upgrades
• Asbestos and lead-based paint management-in-place or abatement
Experience & Qualifications www.cdg-tx.com
Scheduling Project delays associated with construction projects translate directly into additional cost. Equally important, is the disruption caused to the occupants who must alter their daily routines because of each project. Accordingly, it’s important that project schedules are met. CDG has a proven track record in this area, achieving success by defining in clear and concise terms project parameters within the contract documents. This often requires defining construction activities while buildings or portions of buildings remain occupied. For each project undertaken, CDG will meet with the owner and staff to obtain an understanding of operational needs, considering such issues as periods of peak operation, when contractor disturbance cannot be tolerated. From these meetings, we will develop detailed phasing plans that will be refined to consider relocation times. The final approved detailed phasing plans are included at the front of the construction documents, defining in concise terms the parameters that will be imposed on the contractor during construction. Work schedules are created using Microsoft Scheduler or other scheduling programs. Some of these schedules can be client dictated. CDG uses a scheduling program to track the progress of each project to ensure that every deadline is met and every meeting is well-prepared-for. Electronic updates are sent to clients, contractors, and consultants as the need arises. Contract documents can also be placed online for the client’s review. Because CDG is sensitive to schedules, these programs have been set in place to ensure that our quality of service is maintained, even when faced with a deadline.
Experience & Qualifications www.cdg-tx.com
Communication
The CDG team recognizes that successful projects are a result of our flexibility and responsiveness. We pledge to maintain constant communication with each client’s designated representative throughout the entire design process. We take a proactive approach to communication; thus, we work closely with each consultant and sub-consultant to ensure that the project scope is clearly understood by all. Through meetings, conference calls, walk-throughs and programs previously mentioned, we are able to achieve this goal.
Cost Control
CDG staff treats client budgets’ as if they were their own. By meeting with the client and listening carefully to what is expected, CDG is able to deliver accurate cost estimates. Throughout each project, CDG offers cost-effective alternatives when appropriate, which is one explanation for our repeat business. It is also CDG’s tradition to schedule meetings at the 30%, 60% and 100% progress marks in order to confirm with the entire party that the project is still on budget.

Contractor: Bovis Lend Lease, G.C. Contact: Tom Lehrman 817.302.7757 Completion Date: August 2003 Brief Description: AmeriCredit, a third party automobile financing company, based in Fort Worth, hired Stinson Design Group, now CDG-Texas, to design new corporate facilities for them in Peterborough, Ontario; Jacksonville, Florida; and Chandler, Arizona. Each facility was designed to address the issues unique to its location. Because of Jacksonville’s coastal climate, the center required consideration of the coastal salt air and the corrosive nature of the area’s climate. To meet this need, the center’s design emphasized the use of non-metallic building materials or metals that were non-corrosive. Construction for the center in Ontario began as one of the area’s coldest winters ended. The freeze line at the construction site extended to 36 inches below ground. The CDG team used ground-thawing equipment to warm the lay foundations despite the weather and assisted in coordinating the arrival of construction materials from outside of Canada, where all foreign goods were delayed due to customs service. The CDG team was hard at work to address these issue and ensure that move-in dates would not be compromised.

The Jacksonville, Florida build-to-suit project encompassed 85,000 square feet on two floors with a naturally lit atrium at the building’s center. The center incorporates contemporary design elements with AmeriCredit’s corporate image creating a distinctive facility with highlights found at other AmeriCredit buildings. The center features training areas, conference rooms, a 200-seat cafeteria, a catering kitchen and break rooms to meet the needs of AmeriCredit’s employees. As the center was constructed, the project team worked hard behind the scenes, making sure AmeriCredit received the best possible center, working closely with the site’s developer and guiding the project’s contractor by establishing a continuous presence at the construction site. CDG, then Stinson Design Group, along with Carter & Burgess, now Jacobs Engineering, personally attended to the center’s details, coordinating vendors and facilitating a contract with a caterer to serve food in the center’s cafeteria and catering kitchen. For the Peterborough facility, CDG along with Carter & Burgess designed an 85,000 sq. ft. build-to-suit center. To open up the work area and allow for more flexibility, 60-70 percent of the building was designed using exposed structures.
The Peterborough center features an outdoor seating area, a 200-seat cafeteria, a catering kitchen, break rooms, public phone kiosks, and a walking trail surrounding the center’s surface parking lot. All of these amenities were incorporated into a unique interior design scheme which invited employees to work in a lively environment.
“We were extremely pleased with our
design of AmeriCredit and honored
that we were asked to design not one,
but three of their facilities.”

Contractor: DalMac
Completion Date: 2001
Brief Description: Telvista, which owns CompUSA, needed a state-of-the-art contact center they could sell to their clients. The outsourcing facility needed to be functional, flexible, and fun. Our architects created the prototype for teaming arrangements by designing a V-shaped pod for 16 agents and a supervisor that creates an organic flow. Six hundred miles of cable run under the 80,000 square feet of raised floor. On the surface is a cafeteria, showers, quiet areas and an extensive training and conference center. Bold, vibrant colors accent the 125,000 square foot facility, making way finding a cinch. A colorful cafeteria with a catered kitchen and a self-preparation area was designed. The design is bold and in keeping with the need to keep employees motivated through the use of an inviting work environment. The cafeteria serves 1,300 employees, and encompasses approximately 7,500 sq. ft. First place winner of Houston Chronicle’s ASID Design Award, 1999.

The 125,000 square-foot call center features a data center, five IDF support rooms, three laboratories, product support, two command centers, and work stations for call handling. The expansive raised floor area provides easy electrical and data connection manipulation. This concrete waffle floor has an integral carpet tile attached so that carpet and tile have a one-to-one connection for ease in maintenance. Two new generators provide complete electrical backup for the 24-hour facility. A 4,500 square-foot addition provides space for a new boiler, chiller, and electrical transformer. Light is provided in three lumen ranges depending on work need. Five suppression systems and security as well as HVAC are coordinated through a $350,000 control system. The audiovisual component includes LEDs for seven training rooms, rear-screen projection for two briefing areas, and a software product which monitors calls and controls access to the network via an inset screen in the monitor on each of the 1,100 call center stations.
The project was designed and completed within three months by the CDG team, which included the engineers of Carter & Burgess, now Jacobs Engineering. The intense schedule required close coordination with Texas Utilities, Southwestern Bell, and GTE, as well as the City of Plano.

The primary challenge was to create a U.S. style facility which would project Telegate’s branding concept in the U.S. and, more importantly, retain employees in a tight labor force. CDG designers produced construction documentation for the two projects in one month. Bright colors, curved walls, open break areas and free-standing furniture enhance the work environment and make the space interesting for employees. Completion Phase I—Feasibility Plan, January 2008 Date: Phase II, III—Final Design & Construction, September 2010 Project The British School of Houston occupies the former campus of Scope: Northwest Academy and Houston Christian High School in the western section of Oak Forest. With anticipated growth from 544 students to 850 students in the next two years, the 35-year- old facility requires MEP updates, wing expansions and new wings for Upper School and IB program students. A feasibility plan was completed in January 2008 to address these needs, using the facility’s existing footprint. CDG designers plan to relocate the main entrance to accommodate vehicular traffic flow and add additional parking and a new performing arts center. Construction is scheduled to begin May 2008 and be completed September 2010.

Scarborough High School Renovation, In Progress
Size: 114,518 square feet Project: As part of the “Rebuild HISD” program, CDG is currently designing the renovation of Houston’s Scarborough High School alongside AECOM, Jones Engineers, and Project Cost Resources. SHS was originally opened in 1968 to relieve the congestion of Waltrip High School and throughout it’s existence has transitioned from junior high to junior- senior high, to high school again . Forty years later, Scarborough is dealing with its own concerns, one of which is the lack of a visible front entrance to the school. In addition, the A/E team is proposing to relocate the clinic and attendance functions to a new wing, which would make it easier for parents to pick up sick students and drop off late arrivals who need to check-in with the attendance office. These relocations will also allow for restrooms to be added to the administrative suite, which was a request made by the school’s representatives. CDG plans to give the school a more prominent and welcoming front entrance by reworking exterior brick colors and adding a glass entrance to the administrative suite. A proposed new entry canopy will also a provide a long-missing covered connection between Wings 1 and 2 at the front of the building. MEP updates will be made as well to ensure that the entire facility operates with full-efficiency. By combining budget dollars from overlapping deficiencies and by integrating creative design concepts, the CDG team was able to include many of the desires expressed by the school and Education Adequacy within the allotted original budget.

CompUSA Data Center
CDG created the exterior sign for Agillion Headquarters with the intent to reinforce their brand using bubbles and circular shapes. This unique arched sign perfectly emphasizes Agillion’s image through creative design. Due to company growth, NewQuest Properties needed a new building to accommodate 98 employees. Because they frequently entertain clients in the office, they needed a professional, yet inviting atmosphere. CDG provided a full-kitchen and a Great Room with high ceilings, natural wood floors, and living-room seating around a stone fireplace.

To increase aesthetics and efficiency, six hundred miles of cable were hidden beneath 85,000 square feet of raised floor for CompUSA. AmeriCredit commissioned an 84,000 square foot call center to reflect their company’s spirit—enthusiastic and fun. CDG put a “twist” into the company’s standard plan using interesting colors, shapes, and finishes. Undulating metal grids and waves of vibrant color sweep through the corridor and make the ceiling “pop”.
