WINNING SPINSTWO LEADING FIGURES ON THE

Big Apple jazz scene who will be tour-ing in Europe with an all-female jazzseptet next month, vocalist Cécile McLorinSalvant and pianist Renee Rosnes, havenew highly personal albums. Salvant con-tributes five originals to the 12-song pro-gram of her sophomore outing, while thecenterpiece of Rosnes' all originals CD is aseven-part suite on the evolution of thenatural world.

For One to Love, Cécile McLorinSalvant (Mack Avenue), differs markedlyfrom Salvant's 2013 debut CD,WomanChild, which consisted mostly ofvintage blues and pop standards from thefirst decades of the 20th Century. Salvantincludes a couple of early jazz/blues songshere, but the bulk of the material is eitherher own or "show tunes" from Broadwayand classic film musicals. What remainsconstant is her nigh incredible voice, aninfinitely virtuosic instrument on a parwith the very best in the jazz tradition, from Bessie Smith and Ella Fitzgerald toSarah Vaughan and Betty Carter.Salvant commands not only a wide

octave range but also a palette of tonesfrom pure to rough, smooth to vibratoheavy, and an equally varied arsenal oftimbres and dramatic attitudes.Accompanied by a trio led by pianist AaronDiehl (also heard on WomanChild),Salvant again proves she has exceptionalrapport and give-and-take with her musi-cians.Presenting herself here as much in the

manner of a cabaret artiste as a jazzsinger, Salvant creates a dramatic personawith a repertoire weighted toward portray-ing a woman in love's doubts and insecuri-ties as much as her joys and triumphs. The first thing we hear is her breathless

sighing opening phrases on her own atmos-pheric "Fog" as if her voice rises out of onetoward a limpid tone in which hints ofVaughan's rich vibrato inform the meaningof cryptic lines, like "I'm alone, I'm free /Who knew that I'd miss the mess? / Themist must have evanesced." The song con-cerns how a new lover reminds her of anold one ("He's just like you"), full ofheartaches. "Growlin' Dan," an early bluesstyle song from Cab Calloway's sisterBlanche, displays Salvant's own raspygrowl in a parodic celebration of the domi-neering (possibly a pimp) man of the title."Stepsisters' Lament" from Rodgers and

Hammerstein's Cinderella kicks off a quar-tet of songs of doubt and slyly mocking

self-deprecation continued with her own"Look at Me," on the confusion of friend-ship and love; a Betty Carter deconstruc-tion of the chauvinistic Hal David-BurtBacharach "Wives and Lovers;" and her"Left Over," a duet with Diehl reminiscentof Holiday's most self-lacerating, vulnera-ble songs. The second half of the CD is more opti-

mistic and ebullient, Salvant and the triocreating tour-de-force, multi-tempo extrav-aganzas of "The Trolley Song" (debuted onfilm by Judy Garland) and "Something'sComing" from West Side Story. There's alsoa gentle, original waltz, a French torchsong, a raunchy Bessie Smith blues and areturn to haunting vulnerability in hercloser, "Underling," that ends with thealbum's title phrase.

The core of Written in the Rocks, ReneeRosnes (Smoke Sessions), The GalapagosSuite, is a musical meditation on andexpression of the evolution of the naturalworld and mankind, from a group of high-ly empathetic musicians whose ensemblework is reminiscent of the sophisticationand unity of the Modern Jazz Quartet. It isrewarding and challenging music, even ifyou know nothing of the evolutionaryevents and milestones Rosnes mines forinspiration. The explosion that formed ouruniverse is expressed in an increasinglyelaborate quintet piece culminating inSteve Wilson's overdubbed flute and sopra-no sax. One note develops into complexchords on "So Simple a Beginning," a lyri-cal waltz evoking evolution. "Written in the Rocks" is a haunting

ballad with a memorable melody, withvibist Steve Nelson, bassist PeterWashington, drummer Bill Stewart andRosnes in MJQ mode. A "spiky, atonalline" and group improvisation distinguishthe suite's finale, "Cambrian Explosion." Acontrafact of "How Deep Is the Ocean,""From Here to a Star," and a rompingbebop quintet "Goodbye Mumbai" roundout this superior album from one of jazz'svery best pianist-composers.

Cécile McLorin Salvant appears atJazz at Lincoln Center's Appel Room,Feb. 12-14. Renee Rosnes has a CDrelease gig for Written in the Rocks atSmoke, Feb. 5-7, with her quartetincluding vibist Steve Nelson, bassistPeter Washington and Lenny Whiteon drums. She also duets with bassistGeorge Mraz at Windham (NY) CivicCenter on Feb. 13.

S P O T LEDEN BAREKET BAR NEXT DOOR / FEB. 2 and CORNELIA STREET CAFE / FEB. 23Although a relative newcomer to New York's scene, the Argentina-born Israeli bari-tone saxophonist Eden Bareket quickly gained notice and esteem as an in-demandsideman. Indeed, Bareket's collaborative projects show an eclectic streak, as his hornplaying ranges from the modern classic Eyal Vilner Big Band, to the adventurous AriHoenig Nonet, to even the Ethiopian jazz-inspired grooves of LIONS. As his star hascontinued to rise, Bareket has also woven these disparate musical strands together inhis own leader project, a trio featuring bassist Or Bareket and drummer Yonadav HaLevi. This notably minimalist and unfussy instrumentation is utilized to the group'sadvantage as the trio unveils a set of sparsely funky, often dark-hued grooves, allwhile stretching out their positions into very open territory. SH

JAY LEONHART AND TOMOKO OHNOJAZZ AT KITANO / FEBRUARY 3Jay Leonhart and Tomoko Ohno might be the most dynamic of any piano-bass duo. Abassist, composer, singer and lyricist, Leonhart infuses every performance with aunique, playful virtuosity and witty—at times, self-effacing—lyrics. Engaged in a con-stant and inimitable dialog with his bass, he invites listeners into each musical dis-cussion. Consummate facility has allowed Leonhart to perform with such icons as JudyGarland, Duke Ellington, Kenny Barron, Sting, Ray Eldridge and James Taylor.Tomoko's receptive comping enhances Leonhart's narrative with spatial sensitivity andexpressive harmony. A scholarly disciple of Harold Mabern and Rufus Reid, she hasperformed all over New York from Carnegie Hall to the Blue Note, and collaboratedwith Slide Hampton, James Spaulding and the Dizzy Gillespie Alumni Big Band. SJ

KEN FOWSER SMALLS JAZZ CLUB / FEBRUARY 4Ken Fowser is a big-toned tenor saxophonist who shows a great appreciation for thecontributions of past jazz masters while forging new harmonic directions. The post-bop stylist counts George Coleman, John Coltrane and Benny Golson among his manyinfluences and the young reedman has already developed a confident, mature sound, burnished by his studies with Harold Mabern and Eric Alexander. After recording fourreleases for Posi-tone, co-billed with vibraphonist Behn Gillece, a childhood friend,Fowser's new CD, Standing Tall, is his first as a sole leader. Showcasing a set of com-pelling originals from his prolific output, this session features terrific interplay withtrumpeter Josh Bruneau and pianist Rick Germanson. Both men join him at Smallsalong with bassist Tyler Mitchel and drummer Jason Tiemann. KD

SCOTT REEVESSILVANA / FEBRUARY 4Multi-instrumentalist/composer Scott Reeves embodies the trifecta of the modern jazzpractitioner by allowing his creativity to show in performing, composing and teaching.Whether it's playing with his quintet, leading his orchestra, teaching or composing,Reeves demonstrates that a multi-faceted approach has a far-reaching impact. Of noteis his use of alto flugelhorn, an instrument rarely heard in jazz, that he first put ontape as a leader with his debut album You Are What You Think in 1998. Reeves' ded-ication to jazz pedagogy has been seen in his appointments at Juilliard, WesternWashington University and his current position at The City College of New York. AtSilvana, Reeves is joined by tenor saxophonist Tim Armacost, guitarist Rob Reiche, bassist Rusty Holloway and drummer Eric Reeves. EW

MATT PARKER NATIONAL SAWDUST / FEBRUARY 11In 2013, saxophonist Matt Parker delighted critics and fans alike with his debutWorlds Put Together, highlighting a talent that could dig deep into the saxophone'sstoried past while still offering uniquely personal takes on the horn. While Parker'splaying can recall the gruff-yet-sensuous lines of Ben Webster, he is still very muchhis own artist, whose memorable melodicism and unerring sense of swing consistent-ly serve him well in performance and on record. This month, Parker celebrates therelease of his follow-up album, Present Time, with an event featuring bassist AlanHampton and drummer Reggie Quinerly. A sparer instrumentation than one oftensees with Parker's performance, the piano-less trio grants the horn player room tostretch out and show off his exemplary harmonic gifts and melodic imagination. L I G H TGREGORY PORTER TOWN HALL / FEBRUARY 13A contemporary channel, Gregory Porter imbues his unique sound with artistic insightfrom the generations of music that came before him. The singer, composer and lyricistembraces creative evolution and individualism, while pulling at the eclectic roots ofAmerican music. A developing master of his instrument, Porter possesses poetic move-ment through time and a connection to both modern harmonic influences and theblues; his lyrics offer an honest expression of the human condition. The depth of inten-tion in Porter's music has allowed him to travel the world and collaborate live and inthe studio with beloved artists from Laura Mvula to Stevie Wonder, and acclaimed pro-ducer Brian Bacchus. Joining him are bandmates Chip Crawford, Emanuel Harrold,Aaron James, Yosuke Sato and Tivon Pennicott. SJ

JORIS TEEPESISTA'S PLACE / FEBRUARY 27Joris Teepe emigrated from his native Holland to immerse himself in the New Yorkjazz scene in 1992. Soon the left-handed bassist found himself in great demand as asideman, due to his warm tone and swinging beat. Teepe also gained critical acclaimfor his immense skills as a composer and arranger, writing diverse, engaging chartsfor ensembles ranging from trios to big bands, as heard on his dozen CDs as a leader.Initially focused on bop, though Teepe embraced all the jazz traditions, the bassist'snine-year stint with the late drummer Rashied Ali opened his ears to avant garde jazz.Teepe's performance is a tribute to Ali, aided by pianist Greg Murphy, trumpeter JoshEvans, saxophonist Lawrence Clark and special guest Billy Hart on drums. GRETCHEN PARLATO JAZZ GALLERY / FEBRUARY 19-20To hear Gretchen Parlato is to receive a rare gift. Singer, composer, lyricist and quietcommander of space and time, her musical expression is at once serenely grounded andinfinitely weightless. Her artistic identity fuses rhythmic sophistication and harmoniccuriosity with an iconic subtly in phrasing. A purity of sound and an uncommon depthof musicianship have allowed her to collaborate with artistic innovators Lionel Loueke,Herbie Hancock, Kendrick Scott, Taylor Eigsti, Becca Stevens, Mark Guiliana, GeraldClayton, and Wayne Shorter, who continues to affirm, "There's no one out there likeGretchen." Parlato joins perennial improviser, vocalist Miles Griffith, as they reprisetheir exploration of John Ellis' The Ice Siren, an evening-length jazz opera commissionof The Jazz Gallery's Large Ensemble Composers Series. SJ

DIEGO URCOLA with PAQUITO D'RIVERA QUINTETTRIBECA PERFORMING ARTS CENTER / MARCH 3In tribute to Paquito D'Rivera, the nimble, inventive trumpeter Diego Urcola joins theCuban saxophonist/clarinetist for an evening of jazz from all over South America andthe Caribbean, courtesy of Jack Kleinsinger's Highlights in Jazz Series. Hailing fromBuenos Aires, Urcola carved his place in music after studies at Berklee; then uponarrival in NYC in 1991 with the United Nations Orchestra, Jimmy Heath, SlideHampton, bassist Avishai Cohen, Steve Turre, and, especially, D'Rivera. He has beenlauded as a principal soloist for Guillermo Klein's ensembles, attained a Master'sdegree from Queen's College, while establishing himself as a leader with recordings forthe Sunnyside and Cam Jazz labels. Expect fiery, explosive modern jazz with Urcolaand D'Rivera, joined by pianist Alex Brown, bassist Zach Brown and drummer EricDoob. MGN

ERIC HARLAND JAZZ STANDARD / FEBRUARY 25-28In the contemporary jazz scene, many players display numerous proficiencies in dif-ferent sub-genres, groups and instrumentation. No drummer does this quite as well asEric Harland, whose lithe and graceful style bridges the lean borders between jazz, soul and R&B. Many jazz luminaries have taken note of Harland's talents withWynton Marsalis, Terence Blanchard, Joe Henderson and many others utilizing hisskills. Harland has released two albums as a leader including 2010's Voyager: Live byNight and 2014's Vipassana, with Nextbop.com stating that Vipassana "is a very sat-isfying album, with plenty of rhythmic complexity." For his shows at Jazz Standard,Harland performs with a different group each night showcasing a diverse style withinthe jazz idiom or different instrumentation found in the jazz vernacular. EW

VERY FEW TRIOS STAY TOGE-ther for several decades. Trio 3, the

Barry Harris trio and Trio da Paz havedone it—and are still going strong. However, by sticking together during allthe challenges touring and recording pres-ent, something amazing happens. Theenergy on stage changes. The sound, oncea freewheeling form of experimentation, coalesces and becomes altogether moreintimate, more precise, more natural.

A well-layered blend of bossa nova, samba, samba jazz, afoxe, baiao and mara-catu are all easily detectable in the soundsof Trio da Paz. Samba jazz, Duduka DaFonseca says, is "Brazilian instrumentalmusic: a mix of Brazilian rhythms withjazz improvisation." "We mix thingstogether," Romero Lubambo says."Sometimes we play samba in 3/4, which isdifferent, since normally, samba is playedin 2/4 or 4/4."

Like many forms of Brazilian music, thetrio's compositions span a wide range ofstyles and influences. Trio da Paz featuresRomero Lubambo on guitar, Nilson Mattaon bass and Duduka Da Fonseca, drums. The trio is about to celebrate its 30thanniversary with the release of theiralbum 30.

It was way back in 1985 that Matta,Lubambo and Da Fonseca (who describeshimself as a "jazz drummer who was bornin Brazil") started playing together in DaFonseca's West Village apartment. Callingthemselves the Basement Trio, Matta saysthat the collaboration started out as a wayto "get a little gig in the Village in somesmall place." What accounts for the trio'slongevity is friendship, Matta says, whichexplains why it seems so natural whenthey play. "It's like a marriage," DaFonseca adds.

30 was recorded in two parts, first in2011, then in 2015. It features original

compositions from the band membersalong with "Samba Triste," the first record-ed song of renowned Brazilian composerBaden Powell.

One advantage of being togetherthrough the years is that the group doesn'tneed to rehearse as much. "We have beenrehearsing for 30 years," Matta empha-sizes. Still, each band member has his ownbusy schedule, so the trio plans perform-ances far ahead of time, anywhere from sixmonths to a year.

However, like the other long-lived trios, that "always on-key" sense of comfort alsoallows for moments of spontaneous creativ-ity. "A lot of things happened in the record-ing that we never predicted," Matta says."Every time we play the same song, wesound different. We create something else,we add something new."

For instance, the trio can play very fast, with "a lot of energy," but when they playbossa nova, it's usually very slow. "Peoplerespond to the way we play bossa nova. Itis a very soft, slow way, as if there was anemptiness," Lubambo says. "Each song isgoing to be a different color."

Lubambo, who performs with singerssuch as Dianne Reeves, Luciana Souza andEliane Elias, plays in a way that's bestdescribed as "whispering" with his guitar. And he understands how crucial that whis-pering is, especially for bossa nova—a soft-er version of samba created inside apart-ments at places like Copacabana beach bythose who could afford to, and had timeand space to focus on their instruments.

The intricate layering of lyrics, melodies, rhythm and syncopation is whatmakes Brazilian music so appealing to itsaudience. "When people listen to 'Girl fromIpanema,'" Matta explains, "they don'tknow exactly what they feel because it is acombination of rhythm, a nice melody andharmony. Three things which sound likeone."

Since the guitar is the only chordalinstrument in Trio da Paz, Lubambo's roleis crucial. "I play the melodies and the har-monies and the rhythms," he says. "I haveto be really really awake every second."

To master all the nuances that allowthe music to come together, Lubambo hasto think about the music and what themusic and the lyrics want to say. He says,"I try to know the lyrics of every songbecause the ideas and the lyrics are con-nected."

Connection prevails for Trio da Paz."We are like a telepathic team," DaFonseca explains. "Like the ThreeMusketeers; like a soccer team. We have ademocratic relationship."

Trio da Paz with Joyce and DoriCaymmi are at Birdland Feb. 23-27for a rare showcase of Braziliangreats.

HERE'S A MULTIPLE-CHOICEtest: Seventy-three-year-old Joe

Chambers is A: one of the legendary side-man drummers in the 60s, with recordingswith Freddie Hubbard, Joe Henderson,Donald Byrd, Wayne Shorter, JoeHenderson, Chick Corea, Miles Davis andCharles Mingus. B: One of the originalmembers of Max Roach's renowned percus-sion ensemble M'BOOM. And C: One of themost comprehensive and compelling multi-instrumentalists in jazz. All three choices are correct. However,

as the Pennsylvania-born, North Carolina-based Chambers said by phone, thoseanswers are also incomplete."I'm a percussionist," Chambers proud-

ly declares. "A percussionist is someonewho has the skill to move around theentire family of percussion instruments, which consists of anything shaken, struckor scraped. That includes drums, the mal-let instruments—vibraphone, xylophone, marimba—the tympani and the variousidiophonic [instruments] that Latin musi-cians play, like the maracas. Percussionhas the widest variety of sounds of any sec-tion of the orchestra."Throughout his five-decade career,

Chambers has displayed his bountifulmusical gifts on his recordings as aleader—from his 1974 LP, The Almoravid,Double Exposure, his recording with thegreat organist Larry Young, to his 1998Blue Note CD, Mirrors, which featured hisingenious cover of Janet Jackson's "ComeBack to Me." Horace To The Max—his soul-ful and swinging tribute to Horace Silverand Max Roach, and Joe Chambers MovingPictures Orchestra, a 2012 live date fromJazz at Lincoln Center, which featuresChambers conducting a large ensemble, rounds out his eclectic oeuvre. On those recordings, Chambers exhibits

the full-flower of his expansive musicality, especially as a pianist and a marimba/vibraphone virtuoso. And the same is trueon his new CD, Landscapes, which findsChambers in a spirited, overdubbed, per-cussion discussion with himself on drums, congas, bongos, marimba, vibraphone, syn-thesizer and piano, with Rick Germansonalso on piano and bassist Ira Coleman, whoform the latest version of Chambers'Outlaw Band, named after a Horace Silvercomposition. drums and percussion when Chambersplays vibes. The CD's ten tracks range from the

swing-at-the-speed-of-bop tempo of SonnyRollins' "Airegin," and the gospel-tinged"Underground System," composed by KarlRatzer and the tender bass-drum-pianoreading of the evergreen standard, "NeverLet Me Go." "The Outlaw" and "Ecaroh,"the former, rhythmically rendered in azesty Cubop tempo, and the latter, an Afro-impressionistic composition of compellingmelodic colors, are from the pen of HoraceSilver: a musician high in Chambers' pan-theon of jazz idols."He's one of the greatest composer/

arranger/organizers in the post-bop era ofthe 50s and 60s," Chambers fondly recalls."The first time I heard 'The Outlaw' was ona jukebox. It's a heck of a composition. And, if you slow it down, it sounds like acomposition from the Romantic period ofclassical music, like a Liszt etude or aconcerto."The opening selection on the CD is a 6/8

bembe-powered, 4/4 swung take onThelonious Monk's "Epistrophy," based onan M'BOOM arrangement. The title trackis a nearly ten-minute, moving and medi-tative solo piano composition penned byChambers that displays the kind of floridand fluid pianism Chambers has exhibitedon previous recordings. "I play what theycall 'arrangers piano.' All good musiciansplay piano. I and maybe Jack DeJohnettehave a little more skill and technique andtheoretical knowledge," Chambers says.Another track, "Pas De Trois," written bypianist John Hicks, is a buoyant waltz. On Landscapes, Chambers' percussive

mastery effortlessly translates into thevivid and infinitely varied rhythms ofLatin America, as evidenced by the festive,Brazilian syncopations of "Samba de

ANOTHER REASON TO CELEBRATEBy Elzy Kolb

Modern LoveVocalist/composer/arranger Valentina

Marino experienced her first musicalcrush when her father played a collabora-tion of Ella Fitzgerald and LouisArmstrong for her. "It was love at first lis-ten," she recalls. Hoping to make her owncontributions to the form, she attendedmusic school in Rome, but economic pres-sures put her jazz studies on hold.An invitation to sit in at the Cotton

Club during a 2008 visit to the Big Applerevived the dream. "It was so emotional forme; my parents were there; I couldn'tbelieve I sang with the orchestra."Afterward, saxophonist John David Simontold her, "Yeah, baby, you're in New York.Everything happens here!" Marino was determined to finish her

jazz studies and convinced that Manhattanwas the place to do it. She auditioned andwas accepted at The New School, whereshe studied with Reggie Workman, AmyLondon and Janet Lawson, among others."Janet taught me to never sing a line thatI don't feel or believe, be authentic, be vul-nerable. That's the most important thinganyone could teach me." She graduated in 2013, saying, "I ful-

filled my dream!" However, a new dreamkicked in, of course, to explore philosophyand love through song.Marino's taste in tunes is nothing if not

eclectic. On her upcoming debut recording,PhiLOVEsophy (JazzHead), she covers

songs by Kenny Rankin, Bob Dorough,David Bowie, Jimmy Rowles and AntonioCarlos Jobim, along with some originals, singing in English, Italian and Portuguese. "I'm interested in the story each song

conveys; they're all about love in differentsituations," Marino explains. "Thinkingabout the philosophy of love is a way toexplore and find answers related to thehuman condition."The Dorough tune, "Stealthy Fingers,"

appealed to her because, "It's about happylove—falling in love out of the blue whenyou least expect it." The Rowles composi-tion "The Peacocks," with lyrics by NormaWinstone, piqued Marino's interestthrough "an atmosphere of mystery andsuspense, of human beings' detachmentand projection."During a conversation on the day before

the announcement of Bowie's death,Marino declared him "one of my icons fromgrowing up." She performs his hit "SpaceOddity," which for her demonstrates thehighest expression of love. "He's about todie, and he sends his love to his wife.Everything is so still and quiet and he'sthinking and meditating and watchingwhat's happening on planet Earth. There'sa detachment from the material world, he'senjoying his last moments, so the song isabout love and philosophy at the sametime."With her CD scheduled for release later

this year, Marino is exploring a new pas-sion: experimenting with a vocal looper."That's my latest fun thing. I love the ideaof creating a band with just my own voice. It's amazing what the voice can create andhow it can reproduce the sound of aninstrument."Check out Marino at Zinc Bar Feb. 10,

when she focuses on material fromPhiLOVEsophy at a prerelease gig.

Schneider and Sheila Jordan. "Studyingwith Sheila and Mark Murphy was adream come true," she says. "The world ofjazz is so exciting now, there's so muchgoing on with so many great young artists.Everyone is so nice and encouraging andnothing is unaccepted if it's good, if goodpeople are doing it with dedication. If youlove it and do it to the best of your ability, people warm to it and find it exciting."The singer has been busy preparing for

her appearance at Jazz at Kitano on Feb.11, where listeners can expect to hearlyrics Wardell has written to solos by suchgreat instrumentalists as J.J. Johnson,Bill Evans and Pat Metheny. "I've beenarranging standards, ballads and some uptempo vocalese with different feels andgrooves, tunes steeped in the bebop tradi-tion with a distinctively contemporaryfeel," she reveals. She's also making plans for a long-

anticipated extended stay in the U.S.,starting in June. A firm believer in life-long learning, Wardell plans to immerseherself in music as a listener, student, per-former and, possibly, in the recording stu-dio. "There's so much going on in NewYork, I'm going to be spoiled for choice! Iwant to share the music in a different envi-ronment; I want to learn and grow. No oneis ever too old to have a challenge. If Ithought for one minute I knew everything,

Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, Village Vanguard

I'd crumble."Studying with instrumentalists is on

Wardell's list, as is spending time withother singers, including Dominique Eade."She's an extremely astute musician who isreally on it! I'm going to check everythingout and see what I can learn. Jazz is a uni-versal language we all speak in some wayor form. We can have a conversationbecause we all know that language."

Golden YearsNot too many jazz bands make it to the

half-century mark, but this month theVanguard Jazz Orchestra joins thatexalted few. Founded in 1966, the originalaggregation was known as the ThadJones/Mel Lewis Orchestra, put together bybig band veterans Jones (trumpeter withCount Basie) and Lewis (Stan Kenton'sdrummer). Studio musicians looking for adifferent kind of creative outlet filled theranks in the early days; the first bookingwas three Monday nights at the VillageVanguard in February 1966.In the decades since then, Jon Faddis,

Joe Lovano, Lew Soloff, Hank Jones, JoeHenderson, Snooky Young, Billy Harper,Rufus Reid, Eddie Bert, Joe Farrell, PepperAdams, Jimmy Knepper and others havefound a home in the 16-piece ensemble.Today, the band comprises the likes ofdirector/trombonist John Mosca, artisticdirector/saxophonist Dick Oatts and com-poser-in-residence/pianist Jim McNeely. With more than 300 charts in its book by

composers including Bob Brookmeyer,McNeely, Slide Hampton, Bob Mintzer andKenny Werner, listeners are likely to hearmaterial ranging from the swinging to theavant garde. The band changed its name to the Mel

Lewis Orchestra in 1978, after Jones movedto Europe, and became the Vanguard JazzOrchestra after Lewis passed away in 1990.The VJO often tours internationally andnew recordings are practically guaranteedGrammy nominations.Help the band celebrate its anniversary

Feb. 1-8, at its home base, the VillageVanguard. The venue, which also celebratesan anniversary this month, far outstrips theVJO for longevity: the venerable Vanguardopened 81 years ago on Feb. 22, 1935.

HOT FLASHESMusician-Venue Owner's CornerA devotion to creative versatility marks

the career of trombonist, pianist and com-poser Brian Drye. A stylistic omnivore,Drye has won highly deserved accoladesfor his chamber music work with The FourBags, for his straight ahead collaborationwith his saxophonist father Howard, aswell as for his genre-defying contributionto the quartet Bizingas (indeed, their 2015album, Eggs Up High, is essential listen-ing). In addition to his many musicalendeavors, Drye also serves as the founderand director of Ibeam Brooklyn, a multi-function education, rehearsal and perform-ance space in Gowanus that has served asa magnet to the borough's diverse talentsfor more than a decade.Despite the space's stellar reputation

today, Drye recalls Ibeam Brooklyn's ori-gins as a bit humbler in scope, as he origi-nally sought it out as a teaching location."I thought it would be great to teach in a

single space instead of running around forlessons," he recalls. "That need led me togetting the space. At first, I thought I'd beusing it for my teaching and maybe forrehearsals. When I got in there and real-ized what the space could do, I startedthinking more broadly. At the time, theKnitting Factory was closing; Tonic was

Brian Drye

closing and, in general, places we weredepending on to play were closing down. So[cornetist and frequent collaborator] KirkKnuffke and I talked about presenting aconcert in this space. With that, I startedto see the potential for something greaterand I decided to invest in gear like a con-cert grand piano. This meant more debtand more bills and there was a period oftime where I wasn't sure how I'd make therent. So I had to find a way to make 100%sure I'd meet the bills each month. Butafter trial and error, I landed at the systemwe have now."While artist-run venues are not uncom-

mon, Ibeam Brooklyn, nevertheless standsout for a unique business model: artistsapply for a membership that enables themto use the facility for rehearsals and per-formances, paying modest fees for spaceusage. Drye notes that while few otherspaces utilize this model, he has enjoyedsuccess with it. "We have anywhere from20 to 30 members at a time. The model isreally cool, especially now because we're atthe point that I can be choosey about whowe have as members and I can pick artistswho produce great music."

The membership model has also engen-dered the extraordinarily diverse array ofconcerts that Ibeam Brooklyn producesand is responsible for its reputation as agenre-blind and broadminded venue.Indeed, in this respect, Drye's role differsmarkedly from a more traditional artisticdirector; while he has say over the artistswho join as members, he cedes any controlover the shows that they produce. The overseeing of Ibeam Brooklyn and

its membership program has enabled Dryeto re-evaluate how he presents himself inhis own musical projects, having observeda wide range of presentation strategies andoutreach approaches. Now, as Drye's soloprojects continue to demand more of histime, he also looks to the future of IbeamBrooklyn, and thinks on how to develop itfurther. "I think I've taken Ibeam as far asI can," he explains. "As we keep moving itforward, I'd like to bring on someone elsewho could take it even further and findadditional opportunities for it."Drye performs at Ibeam Brooklyn in

duo with pianist Rob Curto on Feb. 6. Tolearn more about his music, visitwww.briandrye.com. To see a schedule of events at Ibeam Brooklyn, visitwww.ibreambrooklyn.com.

newest release, Traces, at Jazz Standard. Her fourth overall effort, Traces is Meza'sSunnyside Records debut. A native ofChile, Meza's artistry combines the musicallandscapes of South America and New YorkCity.

Meza's earliest influences includeHendrix—"my first guitar idol," as Mezacalls him—and moved toward the world ofjazz with George Benson and Pat Metheny.During her early training in Chile, Mezadeveloped the ability to play and singimprovised guitar and vocal lines in unison,a centerpiece technique displayed onTraces. "My biggest realization musicallywas to join these two instruments thatwere giving me so much expression inde-pendently," she says.

The album marks a stretching-out tex-turally for Meza. "In general, I play withjust a quartet. But these songs were callingfor more details and layers and timbres."One sophisticated touch is the inclusion of

the cello, whose lower range aptly compli-ments Meza's. Other sounds in the mixinclude layered vocals, mellotron, pumporgan and celeste. "I thought I would justgo for it and make my sonic dream cometrue."

RUDY ROYSTON HYATT NEW BRUNSWICK / FEBRUARY 25Growing up in Ft. Worth, drummer Rudy Royston says he was always surrounded bybongos, rhythm sticks, xylophones and other percussive instruments, brought homeby his father who worked for a children's percussion instrument company, kindlingin Royston a career as an outstanding drummer. Schooled in Colorado and NewJersey, Royston quickly integrated into the New York music scene, performing orrecording with Les McCann, Bill Frisell, Stanley Cowell, Javon Jackson, The MingusBig Band, Tia Fuller and Dave Douglas, among countless others. A Royston rhythmsession can go from an all-out eclipse of the speed limit to a quick downshift, provid-ing quiet colors the next. Royston's recording, 303 (Greenleaf) lives up to his "be whatyou feel" approach, mixing bop, R&B and hip-hop, swinging hard throughout.

CLAUDIO RODITIWILLIAM PATERSON UNIVERSITY / FEBRUARY 21The "blue flame" used to describe the sound of trumpeter Claudio Roditi is the sim-mer that moved this Brazilian to the United States in 1970, first to study at Berklee, then to work with Herbie Mann, Paquito D'Rivera, Joe Henderson, Tito Puente andfour recordings with McCoy Tyner. When Dizzy Gillespie's legendary United NationOrchestra roamed the earth, Roditi was there, giving flight to many a night inTunisia. Maracatu," and on the Afro-Cuban, rumba-guaguanco cadences of "Havana." "It's the highlight of the CD," Chambers

says. "It exemplifies what I wanted to do onthis CD: I laid down the bassline, the per-cussion—congas, clave, marimba, vibes—Ilaid everything down and put drums ontop. Those tracks are studies in syncretismand acculturation in the cultures of theCaribbean and South America where theyfused with African and European rhythmsand song forms."Well after the change of the 21st

Century, Chambers continues to "give thedrummer some" respect that he feels is longoverdue."When I was in high school, around

1958, a teacher told me, 'I don't thinkyou're doing anything … Drums ain't noth-ing,'" Chambers painfully recalls. "She wasimplementing cultural imperialism on me.And it's an attitude that prevails in the cul-ture that we live in, which places drums inthe back. Drums are less significant thanthe violin or the piano from a Eurocentricperspective. That mindset prevails in thebusiness that I'm in."

On my first trip to Boston, when I was just out of high school, I encountered the SouthBoston accent when I asked a stranger where I might find the bus station, and he said, "PackSquare." After asking some other strangers where Pack Square might be, and getting puz-zled responses, I discovered that he was referring to Park Square. So, I guess if Tony Bennetthad been born a Southie, he would have left his hat in San Francisco.

Pianist Don Edmonds told guitarist Bill Wurtzel about a bassist he worked with whosaid he was born in 1983. Don replied, "I was washed up before you were born."

ARISK-TAKING ARTIST, RUSSLossing is a composer of more than

400 works, has released 12 CDs as a leaderand appears on over 30 others. He was amember of the Paul Motian Quintet andhas played worldwide with a long andimpressive list of modern jazz improvisers.

Q. Favorite place in the world to play, public or private?

A. The Village Vanguard. I played aweek there with Paul Motian. A great vibeand so much history there.

Q. One gig or recording of yours youcan't shake?

A. Probably the gig with Motian at theVanguard if I had to choose. His sound andpresence were very powerful every night, every set.

Q. One gig or recording of a contempo-rary?

A. In the jazz realm, I saw Paul Bleyplay duo with Charlie Haden back in thelate 80s or early 90s at the old Iridium.

That one sticks in my mind. I sat two feetfrom the piano: it was like a private lessonfrom him. His sound production and direct-ness of ideas are overwhelmingly strong. Also, when I first moved to NYC in themid-80s, I spent many late late nights atBradley's listening to Hank Jones, TommyFlanagan and many others. After 2 a.m.they really started stretching.

Q. Do you think playing, appreciatingjazz requires intelligence?

A. Playing, yes. Appreciating, not real-ly, but the more you know about music themore you get out of it.

Q. How have your recorded music lis-tening habits changed?

A. A few years ago I acquired, throughthe help of a friend, a vintage audiophilestereo system. It has had a surprisinglyprofound impact for me. Music that I havelistened to for decades has become freshand new again.

Q. What do you struggle with in yourcreative life?

A. I have many projects that do not fitneatly into current categories. Finding out-lets for them is difficult.

Q. A life in music—more perspiration orinspiration?

A. I believe everyone is born with cer-tain talents and gifts. However, there is nosubstitute for doing the hard work. I havepracticed the piano over 50,000 hours, (notincluding endless hours of composing) andI'm still working it every day.

Q. Your favorite or most importantrecording of yours to you?

A. Impossible to choose, but I am fond ofmy latest album of solo piano improvisa-tions, Eclipse, released just now on my ownlabel, Aqua Piazza Records. Probably mymost intimate statement so far. Some folksmay not consider it to be jazz, but as anartist, you can't worry about that!

Russ Lossing is at The Stone inresidency Feb. 23-28.

BRAZILIAN SINGER BEBEL GIL-berto isn't your typical bossa nova

performer. While her heart belongs toBrazil and its musical traditions, her soundcreates a world that blends both North andSouth. Attending one of her shows will vic-ariously transport you to Ipanema Beach, where so many bossa nova tunes were com-posed. And while the rhapsodic melodiesthat permeate Rio will envelop you, you willalso relish hearing a deep bass and feel likeletting loose as if you were attending a popconcert. In person, she is as warm and welcoming

as the rapturous music that has come todefine her. It's this sense of generosity, arare approachable quality, that allows herto easily fill clubs just about every night. Itisn't difficult to see what makes the NewYork-born singer so popular. At one of herrecent Blue Note performances, she poppeda bottle of champagne and toasted hercousin who was sitting next to the stage. Itfelt like she was reveling in an intimateconversation with her audience. "I would prefer that we are sharing this

moment now and I am singing for you butyou could have something to say I wouldlike to hear because it might be a goodthing," the singer says. "I never think thatI know the truth and that I have all theresponses."Beyond the music, Gilberto is, in

essence, an entertainer. Her acting back-ground comes through in the way she cap-tures her audience's attention as sheembodies the feminine form through thegentle grace of her gestures. When shesings her songs' lyrics, in lovely Portugueseor conveyed more astutely with English,Gilberto will make you dream aboutromance, love stories and Brazil."My goal will be always to try and touch

people's hearts," Gilberto says. "When weplay on stage I like to be in a magical mood,so I can always get goose bumps whilesinging—that's the best feeling in theworld!"Though Gilberto was born in New York,
