the better your chances of putting it out.

Fires have one thing in common. They grow and spread in three stages:

Stage I:Ignition

Stage II: Critical

Stage III:Blaze

At this stage, the f ire is relatively small . But unless controlled swift ly, i t wil l spread and grow,

increasingly rapidly. This is the only stage at which a fire extinguisher can be safely used.

At this stage, fire begins to move rapidly over large areas, and large volumes of ext inguishing agent are

necessary to fight the growing fire. At this point, only sophisticated sprinkler systems can be used.

At this stage, the fire is out of control and could require thousands of litres (kgs) of ext inguishing agent.

At the Blaze Stage, only a ful ly equipped fire brigade stands any chance of putting the f ire out.

E ven the smallest, most harmless looking fire will turn lethal if left unchecked. And the longeryou take to detect a fire, the faster it will grow, until it is far beyond the point of control.

Proof? Take a look at figures 1 to 3 below. These are frames from a Ceasefire trial conducted in a

controlled environment. The initial flame keeps growing until it becomes a blaze that engulfs the entire

room in just six minutes less time than it takes to make a cup of coffee or send an email! This speed

with which fire grows and spreads is the first noticeable and deadly characteristic of fire. We call it the

Speed Power Equation.

There are six different types of fires, each with their own rate of spread and growth. So a petrol fire,

for instance, could take just four seconds to reach the blaze stage, while a wood fire could take up to

six or eight minutes to reach the same intensity.

To know fire, we must first know that there is not just one type of fire, but many. Six, to be precise.The type or class of fire depends on the fuel that is burning. And there are particular types of extinguishers

built for specific classes of fires. Using the wrong extinguisher on the wrong class of fire can literally prove

lethal. For example, using a water extinguisher on an electrical fire will result in an electric shock.

Effective against all classes of fire

Using the wrong extinguisher on the wrong class of fire

can be dangerous. Often, there isn't enough time to pick

the right extinguisher to use on a fire. In such cases, the

consequences can prove fatal.

The ABC Powder range of extinguishers can be used

against Class A, B and C fires. They can also be used to

extinguish electrically started fires.

A combination of mono ammonium phosphate (MAP)

and ammonium sulphate, ABC Dry Powder has a very low

melting point. Hence, its particles fuse together and cut off
