eAsY TO APPROACH

UTOPIA has a suitably alluring schedule ahead: Christmas in the Maldives

followed by several months in Thailand and the Seychelles. The 72m, 1,500-ton

Dutch masterpiece of mechanical wizardry wields a subtle magic; to spare

the blushes of an undignified ‘leg up’ to Asia’s notoriously high quaysides,

UTOPIA’S powered ladder slides out of the bulwark and locks perfectly

into place against the dock.

After cruising through the Caribbean this winter, the 60m GERMANIA NOVA

heads to Northern Europe in summer ’14 – unusual for yachts of this size. This

elegant racing schooner is a replica of the 1908 GERMANIA constructed by

Germaniawerft. Built with lightweight materials for optimum performance,

the ship’s 1,300 – 2,383 square meters of sails can take her up to 15 knots.

For a frolic in the South Pacific this winter, the Dutch-built, 52m BELLE AIMÉE

is the epitome of family entertainment. Featuring bright and cheery interiors,

a jukebox, an inflatable trampoline, a sun deck movie screen, table football and

even a marine laboratory, there’s no time for boredom. The glorious new 13m

Hinckley Talaria jet tender raises her game further.

Upgraded to the very highest standard by very charter-orientated owners,

the 1960’s modern classic SHERAKHAN now has the world at her feet. Her

impending global tour will take in the many remote places our clients often

hanker after: Antarctica, the Solomon Islands and the Galapagos among

them. Thrill-seekers can sit in the crow’s nest 20m above the waterline for

a breathtaking 360-degree view.

sHeRAkHAN – 26 guesTs – Available to charter from $385,000 per week

Clients are starting to plan well ahead for Cecil Wright charters. Like the best yachts in the most glamorous locations, good deals don’t hang around for long – so we’ll help you catch them while you can.

The buoyant atmosphere at the Monaco Yacht Show this year was strongly

reminiscent of the pre-2008 exhibitions. Exciting sales at the industry’s largest

annual gathering included the 73m RED SqUARE and the 50m UMBRA. Cecil

Wright also generated a flurry of interest – we are now engaged with nine

enquiries on ISSANA alone. In addition, we've just been informed that the

68m Lurssen KISMET has been sold, which follows the sale of the 70m Benetti

REVERIE earlier in the week. Activity in the large yacht market is definitely

picking up pace.

eAsTeRN INTeResT

As the ‘tiger economies’ develop serious financial firepower, so too are they

displaying a penchant for the freedom of the open water. Following the success

of Feadship’s first order from China, it has begun construction on three identical

yachts for three Chinese friends. Also, Dalian Wanda of China has just acquired

a 91.82% stake in Sunseeker, further signifying a country keen to move into

the prestigious yachting space. Indeed, we are already investigating solutions

for our sales and charter clients regarding China’s inadequate mooring

infrastructure, fuelling & servicing networks and how best to navigate the

various taxes involved.

BARgAININg POWeR

The post-2008 decline in the building of mid-sized yachts (30m – 60m) will

shortly create a pinch in the market as the demand for 1 to 5 year old yachts

outstrips supply. This moment will ring a new chapter for the yacht brokerage

market. This will be an opportunity for some fantastic deals – and we’re ready

to assist you in making the most astute choices.

Impressive recent sales, new players in action and excellent deals on the horizon: The brokerage market is beginning to beam once more.

Chris Cecil-Wright: What’s your history in yachting? I met you several years ago, but presumably you had a history way before you started getting into big boats?

gerhard Berger: I’ve had a lot of good times sharing boats with partners in the past. It’s been a fascinating business – from buying, rebuilding, designing boats and then offering selective charters, through to selling them. We wanted TUGATSU to appeal both commercially and personally, but I’ve learnt over the years that it takes some effort and skill to increase a yacht’s value and make it a marketable asset. But my introduction to the whole business was with a boat called PIA…

CCW: I remember PIA extremely well. When I was just getting into yacht broking I used to wander the dock looking at boats I really liked and I used to knock on the door and say ‘how about you sell your boat?’ - I always feel that if you really like

something it’s much easier to sell it. That’s how we met, because I came and knocked on your door for PIA. Where did the idea of TUGATSU come from? Why a classic Feadship?

gB: TUGATSU was owned by a friend of mine so I’d already spent time on it before we decided to buy it. We then did a big rebuild to make it viable.

CCW: Did you know a lot about Feadship?

gB: I was beginning to realize that there are a couple of shipyards building boats of a higher quality. I judged a boat mainly on design, size, space and interior but when I started to use TUGATSU I began to understand the difference a Dutch shipyard makes – it’s in every door handle, every vibration, its in every noise, every smell. It’s different engineering, better quality and of course more costs – but then it’s more likely to keep or even increase its value in the end.

Chris Cecil-Wright talks to gerhard Berger, Formula One racing champion and owner of TugATsu – a 45m Feadship currently for sale through Cecil Wright. They discuss his passion for yachting and his particular respect for dutch engineering.

10

SCAN THE qR CODE FOR THE FULL INTERVIEW

Page 13: Cecil Wright News

CCW: The two family businesses (that make up Feadship) cross pollinate their ideas and are constantly improving all the time.

gB: TUGATSU is over 20 years old now, but when I compare it to younger boats that are not out of Feadship I can see it matches or is even better than them.

CCW: You’ve actually created a blueprint for boats to be developed by putting tenders on the top deck and opening the middle deck…

gB: Actually that was my partner’s idea. We didn’t want to see the tender engine when drinking a glass of wine and it made TUGATSU more comfortable.

CCW: What would you include in your next boat?

gB: If I were to buy another boat I would definitely start with Feadship. To get the best quality and resale value – and to get something special - you have to go to the masters, and the masters are Feadship.

CCW: How do you feel about my new approach to the business?

gB: Now that I am selling TUGATSU, I’ve become extremely careful whom I talk to about it. We bought at the top of the market – it’s going to hurt when we sell, no doubt about it. At least boats out of Feadship are more resilient than the others because of their quality. There are plenty of brokers and everybody wants exclusivity in selling, but I was happy to see you want to specialize among the shipyards. Others are trying to sell everything and understand everything – and they don’t because it’s not possible. I think you have a very good approach.

CCW: Thank you Gerhard. The yachting decision is personal and emotional – what I try to do is help people make an emotional decision in an informed way. Allow me to worry about the market, the details and the stats – you make the emotional decision. Many might know that TUGATSU is for sale, but fewer people have the in depth knowledge of the boat that we do at Cecil Wright.

MADAME GU

TANGO

TANGO TANGOMADAME GU

Page 15: Cecil Wright News

duTCH BeAuTIes

After commanding a million man-hours of production, MADAME

GU is acclaimed as the largest yacht ever built in the Netherlands

and 10 metres longer than any boat previously built by Feadship.

At 99m long and 13m wide she cruises at an impressive 25 knots

– the most complex technological achievement that the shipyard

has ever undertaken. In parallel, the elegant, 77m TANGO has

grown accustomed to accolades since her launch from the Royal

Van Lent facility in 2011; she won both the ShowBoat Design

Award and Motor Yacht of the Year at the prestigious World

Superyacht Awards in 2012. As one might expect, MADAME

GU is a serious contender for the latter award this year.

uNIQue APPeAL

From the moment Chris brokered both deals with the Feadship

shipyards, the pursuit of owner personalisation began – an

exacting, beyond bespoke approach, that clients have come to

expect from Cecil Wright. The aesthetic of MADAME GU’s décor

is so particular to the owner’s varied taste that it’s indefinable

as a single style. Her designer Andrew Winch considers ‘St

Petersburg’ and ‘French Empire’ as epithets for her grandeur;

ornate details that extend to a decorative teak motif on the

hatch doors to the helicopter hangar. The winning formula

for TANGO incorporated a design scheme by Eidsgaard –

the distinctive two-tone, architectural appearance secured

a unanimous verdict from the ShowBoat Design Award judges,

who concurred that ‘TANGO has taken the styling of superyachts

a step forward’.

THe FINeR deTAILs

TANGO’s deck areas were designed with specific purposes in

mind: The dedicated spa deck, for example, features a gym,

massage salon and contra-flow pool, while the owner’s deck

ensures absolute privacy. Her engineering prowess is illustrated

in the retractable zero-speed Rolls Royce stabilisers that prevent

queasiness, even while at anchor. For well-being and relaxation

onboard MADAME GU, Winch’s studio conceived of a multitude

of cocooning, sink-in saloons as well as a cinema, spa, gym,

pool, sauna and hair salon. Another exceptional quality is the

state-of-the-art nightclub; a profusion of lasers, strobes and a

kaleidoscopic dance floor that set the scene for a party with

rolling mist, a DJ booth and an array of seating pods.

A collective of creative and technological thinkers have carefully

considered every inch of each yacht – a dialogue made possible

by the close personal connection between Chris Cecil-Wright,

Henk De Vries and Dick Van Lent. It’s a relationship that has

enabled the broking and construction of three of the largest

and most significant Feadships of the last three years. With

their considerable impact and inexhaustible list of attributes,

MADAME GU and TANGO are particularly fine examples of

Dutch shipbuilding mastery.

Two triumphs of Feadship craft and skill, TANgO and MAdAMe gu symbolise the astonishing technological development of the superyacht industry. Chris Cecil-Wright brokered both deals and supervised the meticulous construction of these much-admired masterpieces.

In the rarefied world of yachting there is no compromise on quality, and Chris’s

clients rely on his eye for detail; he is just as discerning away from work, ‘Slightly

retro, yet grown up; stylish but does what it needs to do,’ raves Chris about

Rapha roadwear, the UK-based luxury company: ‘It’s just a nice inspiration.’

CLIMB TO VICTORY

‘The Monaco landscape has some fantastic climbs, like the 1,000m Col de la

Madone’ says Chris, ‘I climbed it in the spring with Chris Froome of Team Sky Pro

Cycling – in fact, his last ride before he won the Tour de France.’ Rapha became

the official sponsor of Team Sky earlier this year and saw Froome finish first in

their kit.

CYCLe CHIC

Founded ten years ago by Simon Mottram, Rapha was born out of a frustration

to find fashionable cycle gear to complement a high performance bike -

previously, the two had seemed mutually exclusive. Rapha’s collection uses only

the finest materials for optimum results: think yak leather for shoes, silk scarves

and naturally breathable merino wool jerseys.

Rapha’s specialist gear is crafted for a sport that offers the perfect balance

of pleasure and pain, challenge and reward. It’s a niche company continually

striving for excellence - and in so doing, Rapha shares common ground with

Cecil Wright.

Having developed a passion for road cycling during the 20 years he was based in Monaco, Chris Cecil-Wright recently discovered the superlative design and quality of Rapha cycling apparel. He’s not looking back.

CHILeAN PATAgONIA

November to March (southern summer) is an

ideal time to explore this captivating region.

Puerto Montt is the departure point for the

Chilean fjords, the stunning Pumalín nature

reserve and the renowned archipelago of

Tierra del Fuego – all of which exist under

the watchful gaze of the distant Andes.

Though this is a fascinating, adventurous

cruising area, the appearance of superyachts

here is sporadic. It is fortunate then that,

luxury explorer, THE ATMOPSHERE –

available for charter through Cecil Wright –

is based at Puerto Montt all year round.

A luxurious explorer that accommodates

up to 28 guests, THE ATMOSPHERE is

renowned for its expeditions and fishing

adventures. Replete with two Bell 407

helicopters, daily excursions include

whale watching, rafting, snorkelling, trekking,

jetboating, air-borne sightseeing, kayaking,

heli-skiing and, naturally, fly-fishing.

The crew are passionate about Patagonia

and are able to expound on the cultural and

geological history of the Southern Andes.

Back onboard, interiors are distinctly Chilean

in style – think native teak, soft alpaca rugs

and animal hides. In addition to the luxuries

of a sauna, treatment room and three

whirlpools, award-winning chef Guillermo

Rodriguez, master of modern Chilean

cuisine, is at the galley’s helm. Itineraries

are entirely bespoke, but here are some

thoughts from the captain on how best to

acclimatise to THE ATMOSPHERE…

The southernmost tip of south America is a geographical grand finale; nature’s own symphony of mountains, glaciers, islands and icebergs.

Confirming the market’s sustained improvement are the 298

yachts over 60m currently on the water (123 of which were

delivered in the last two years) and the healthy book of 100

large yachts on order. The two Feadship-branded shipyards,

Royal De Vries and Royal Van Lent, each have 6 yachts under

construction with availability for new deliveries towards 2017.

BeAMY YACHTs geT THe gO-AHeAd

The Dutch Government’s long-awaited decision to widen

the lock through which finished yachts pass has enabled

Van Lent to begin construction on their largest yacht ever

– a 101m. The completion of both the lock and the yacht

are due to coincide.

WAVes OF OPTIMIsM

Over my 20-year career I’ve been privileged to be involved in

several new builds at Feadship and other Northern European

brands. At Cecil Wright, our analytical software may give us

broad market knowledge, but it’s our personal relationships

with the top shipyards that give us competitive edge. The

stalemate between seller and buyer has now been broken

and new builds are on the increase: Cecil Wright is in an ideal

position to help you capitalise on this future growth.

The global fleet of large yachts over 60m is on course to have doubled in less than five years. The future looks bright.
