Cedar Key School sev-enth-grader Blake Wynans delivered a standout perfor-mance on the VMath virtu-al math program on May 2, when he was the top VMath student at CKS and in Levy County. Wynans at one point also ranked No. 62 out of 161,135 students nationwide, and his class-mate, Michael Collins, was right behind him in second place district-wide. VMath is an online math program that students employ on their Chromebooks.

Stone presents the heritage of the Florida cattle industryBy Deborah GoadBeacon Correspondent

“Five Centuries of Tradition” was the program presented by the Florida Human-ities Council and the Cedar Key Historical Society on Thursday, April 19. Folklor-ist and Gainesville resident Bob Stone presented the historical overview in the Cedar Key Community Center.

Stone played a recording of working cowboys and expressed the virtues and benefits of cattle dogs during a presenta-tion in Cedar Key on the heritage of the Florida cattle industry.

Cattle dogs are most useful for holding up the cows, or “ringing the cattle,” Stone explained, “The way it works is, cattle are herd animals, they seek safety in a herd, in a bunch. So even though they are way bigger than these dogs, they see these dogs as predators, so they tighten up.

“In the old days, it’s not done so much

these days, but in the old days, dogs could hold up a big bunch of cows for hours without any men. The men could go off and gather up more cattle. They still do that to an extent.”

He spoke about the modern-day cow-boy including cowboy churches, cattle sales, cowboy crafts, ranch gates, cattle brands and boots. Also, oral traditions, ro-deo announcers and rodeo clowns; cattle auctioneering and auctions.

Rodeos and rodeo heroes were acknowledged, including rodeo queens and her court. Ranch rodeo games were highlighted, team events with one female on each team competing. All the events in ranch rodeo competitions simulate ranch work.

Stone said “The biggest threat in cattle ranching these days, besides having to deal with a bunch of regulations, is loss of ranch land. It’s getting harder and harder

Sheriff Schultz: ‘Thank you’Dear Gilchrist County Friends and Family,I would like to take a moment to show my apprecia-

tion to all those that had a hand in any way, after the loss of Sgt. Noel Ramirez and Deputy Taylor Lindsey. There are no words to convey the sentiments in my heart. “Thank you” seems so inadequate to express the appre-ciation for all the suppgrt and concern shown to GCSO over the past couple of weeks.

The unimaginable has happened and the loss is tre-mendous. It will not break us, but it will forever change us. A part of our family and this community, is missing. In order for us to be able to accept this tragedy, we must remember these two law enforcement officers, and know they were doing what they loved, what they were “called” to do. For being part of the brother-sisterhood of law enforcement is not a job, it is a calling. On any given day they, or any other officer, would give their all to protect you and me.

There are so many people that rallied around GCSO in our time of grief and made sure every need was met and far beyond what we could have asked. The outpour-ing of food, drinks, flowers, cards, wreaths, flags and everything imaginable was provided each and every day. We were able to provide meals, not only our men and women, but the countless law enforcement officers covering Gilchrist County for us to give our employees time to grieve. There is no way to thank each and every person, business and agency, but please know, your love and most of all prayers were felt and we would not have

gotten through this horrific tragedy without them.

To the Ramirez and Lindsey fam-ilies, our thoughts and prayers will be with you in the months and years ahead. We can never show our appre-ciation for the ultimate sacrifice you and your loved ones made for us. We will never forget them or you, and it is our solemn promise to carry on in their

stead and to make them proud. To all the many law enforcement agencies that came,

that covered for us on the roads, taking calls, serving papers, covering dispatch, we are forever grateful and forever indebted to you. For those agencies that attended the funeral service from all over the United States and Canada, I want you to know that looking out over the sea of uniforms and marked units, gave us the strength to get through the service. Just know, you are now a part of our GCSO family.

Gilchrist County has shown the love of a small town the likes some have never witnessed. There wasn’t a day that went by that we weren’t told by visiting law enforcement agencies, that they had never seen anything like the love and generosity shown to us. Those people took away from Gilchrist County a feeling of genuine love, warmth and comfort that our town provided, not only to us, but to the visitors as well. I am so proud to be a part of this county and that others got a glimpse of the

place we are so blessed to live.A few personal thoughts l’d like to share, we are

strong, we are resilient and we will pick up Sgt. Ramirez and Deputy Lindsey’s torch and run with it. These men will not have given their all in vain, we will be better for their sacrifice, I will make sure of it! The testimony of a man is not in the way he dies, but in the way he lived his life and Sgt. Noel Ramirez and Deputy Taylor Lindsey lived a life of service to their fellow man, they selflessly put on that uniform each day and showed up for a job they loved, to protect you and me. Each day of our life, we write our own obituary by the way in which we live it.

“Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for hrs friends.”

I have no doubt, these guys would have done this any day of the week, if necessary, for any one of us.

The book of Ecclesiastes says; “To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under heaven, A time to weep, and a trme to laugh, A time to mourn, and a time to dance.” It also says, God shall judge the righteous and the wicked “for there is a time there for every purpose.”

Our men, Sgt. Ramirez and Dep. Lindsey, served their purpose with dignity and honor and we will take it from here. In time, we will not mourn, but rather, smile with the rnemories they left us with,

God bless Gilchrist County and the families of the fallen heroes.

to even lease it. Of course, there are many people engaged in fighting that and stop-

ping that. But that’s the biggest threat to cattle ranching.”

The Cedar Key School second- and third-graders traveled to Homosassa Springs State Park May 4 to get an up-close look at what they have been studying for the past few months. For the second-graders, the trip was an opportunity to see how an environment affects the creatures who live in it. And for the third-graders, the trip was a chance to observe migratory manatees, birds, and even a hippopotamus named Lucifer as those animals moved about in a specific environment. This trip was made possible through a grant from Duke Energy.

My mother was truly my saving grace, because she would take me to church with her. I would see my mother smiling in the choir, and I wanted to know this God that made her so happy. If I had not had that faith in my life, I don't know where I would be right now.

The Cedar Key School fourth- and fifth-graders spent May 3 on Seahorse Key where the University of Florida operates the Nature Coast Biological Station and Seahorse Key Marine Lab.

The first activity planned by the UF staff and CKS teachers was to simulate climate change and glacial melting. Students placed a miniature home on the model, trying to figure out where the safest place would be. Most of the homes were flooded or washed away by the warming climate and those that could be saved were moved to a safe zone.

The next event was trawling (using a net) to collect sea creatures, then carrying those creatures back to the lab to get a closer look at them.

At another learning station, students observed a redfish dissection and found out that the otolith – the ear bone – could be used to determine a fish’s age.

The students also learned the terms used to describe the coastline and the habitats they saw.

Gulf sturgeon have begun their annual migration back into the Suwannee River, according to Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) officials. Re-searchers from the U.S. Geological Survey have reported that the fish began returning to the north Florida river in January because of the warm winter.

During 2017, there were three reported sturgeon strikes, resulting in minor injuries to those involved. This year, a sturgeon encounter with a boat has been reported. There were no injuries.

Even one person getting hurt is one too many, said Maj. Andy Krause, FWC regional commander. We want people to be aware the sturgeon are back in the Suwannee and that a risk of injury to boaters does exist.

FWC officers will be on water patrol during the sum-mer months in a continued effort to educate boaters about these jumping fish.

The best course of action is to go slow, wear your life jacket and keep people off the bow of the boat, Krause said. The Suwannee is a beautiful river and we certainly don't want to scare anyone away from enjoying it. We just want those recreating there to be aware these fish are present and can jump at any time.

Going slow is recommended to reduce the risk of im-pact and allow for more reaction time if a jumping stur-geon is encountered. And boaters are always encouraged to wear their life jackets at all times while on the water.

Researchers have determined that the sturgeon jump to communicate with other fish and to gulp air to fill their swim bladders.

Biologists estimate the annual population of sturgeon in the Suwannee River to be approximately 10,000 fish, averaging about 5 feet in length and weighing 40 pounds. However, a few can exceed 170 pounds.

While it is possible for sturgeon to jump anywhere in the river, the fish in the Suwannee are more commonly observed jumping where they gather in holding areas. Major holding areas in the Suwannee occur above Jack’s Sandbar; below Manatee Springs; between Fanning Springs and Usher Landing; below Old Town Trestle; be-low the confluence of the Santa Fe and Suwannee rivers; near Rock Bluff; and below Anderson Springs.

State and federal laws protect sturgeon, and they may not be harvested. To report sturgeon collisions, call 888-404-FWCC (3922). For more information about the Gulf sturgeon, go to MyFWC.com
