Personal Name Signs in Taiwan Sign Language

This paper discusses personal name signs in Taiwan Sign Language (TSL), withthe goal of finding out how personal name signs are motivated. It has been shownthat the common sources of first names signs in TSL are physical characteristics,personality traits, and features of a persons life, etc., wheares the surname signs inTSL are usually based on following sources: (a) They may be based on an exactone-to-one corresponding translation of the Chinese surname; (b) they may comefrom a partial, approximate translation of the Chinese written form; (c) they may bebased on the shape of the full Chinese written form; (d) they may be based on theshape of partial Chinese written form, and (e) they may come from a mixture of theloan translation and the written form. The result of this research has provided aninsight into the study of spoken language and signed language on the issues oflanguage contact and language change.

Key words: Taiwan Sign Language, personal name signs, loan translation, Chinesecharacters
