IntroductionI am Md. Mosharraf Hossain, a participant of the TEA Program. I am from

Bangladesh, here for six weeks to receive the training on professional development and skills. Here I am in the George Mason University, attending several seminars and conferences to get ideas and information and teaching-learning strategies and about the culture and the system of education of the

schools in the U.S.A. As a part of this training, here I am getting training about how to get and keep Portfolio for personal Reflection, Professional Development and Change. This is why; I am writing and keeping here my

portfolio for my professional development, to be applied in my school in my own country.

Who Am I As A TeacherTeaching is a noble profession and teachers are the torch-bearers of education of a country. No profession in the world is as good as teaching. In my student life, when I came to know this fact, I had a commitment to my country that one day I would be a teacher and serve for the country as a nation builder. This is why; I became a teacher to spread the light of education in the society.

The role of a teacher: I think the teacher is a guardian of the society. He works as an agency of the civilization. Usually we know, the person who teaches the students in an educational institution, is called a teacher. So a teacher has to play many roles in a school and as well as in the society. In a school, a teacher has to play the roles of an administrator, facilitator, a guardian of the students a friend of them and sometimes a friend of them. But outside the school, the teacher has to play the role of a reliable friend of the people of the society, a guide and a messenger of them.

The teacher should have the freedom of his own choice in the respective work-area. Keeping pace with the other parts of the educational-field of the world, a teacher must have the rights of receiving training from any training-sources to gear up his professional proficiency and to develop his skills of teaching on the basis of his subject. He should have the rights to change him into a good teacher. A teacher should have the freedom of making his own lesson plan according to the necessity of his fruitful teaching to the students. A teacher should have the rights to implement his own methods and techniques in the classroom to support his perfect and acceptable teaching to the students. But a teacher is not out of the curriculum and the syllabus of his subjects.

A teacher has to do  so many critical activities in his work-area. No doubt, a teacher has to face challenges institutionally and socially. Yet teaching is a noble profession. Though teaching is a hard work, I enjoy it very much and this is why I am a teacher.

Personal/Fieldwork ReflectionsHow To Improve My Classroom Activities In My Native School

Classroom  is a part and parcel of an educational institution. It is the place where students learn many things. So a classroom should be well decorated in order that students can feel comfortable and pleasure to receive lessons from their teachers. It is also important for the teachers to feel ease in the classroom to teach the students properly for the maximum benefit of their student. This is why, as a teacher of English language of a secondary school, I want to improve my classroom more beautifully than before  when I will be back to my school after the completion of my training course arranged by IREX- TEA Program under the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the United States.

Under this program, I visited a school here called Williamsburg Middle School and observed their classroom situations and activities. There are so many differences between their classrooms and ours in my country, Bangladesh. Their classrooms are decorated with all modern facilities including  computers, projectors and all kinds of electronic equipments, text-books, reference books of all subjects including science and technology. It is say that every classroom has a mini library which has a collection of many important and interesting books.

Another thing is that their classes are smaller than those of ours. In my country, our classroom has 70 to 80 students even more than one hundred students, but they have very few students in their classes. Their classroom is 100% student-centered classroom but  my classrooms are not enriched with those kinds of modern  materials as they got here and they are partly student-centered. In their schools in America, the teachers and the students are very communicative. The teachers are not administrative and hard persons, instead they are very friendly and helpful towards the students. The students have freedom to express their opinions and to share their views and informations with their teachers. Teachers assess their values with importance and give their feedback with gentle corrections if necessary. So both the teachers and the students here have positive attitude for teaching-learning activities. Inside and outside the classrooms they maintain discipline very strongly. But though I try to do it in my school, I can't be successful for some reasons.

In America, the teachers try to practice all the methods of teaching very carefully. They maintain the teaching techniques seriously. They make their students do group-work, pair-work, individual-work, silent and personal reading very nicely. Their vocabulary presentation is also attractive. Their test-system is fine. I also do these but I can not implement all these methods and techniques in my work-area for environmental problems and for the lack of teaching-equipments and classroom-materials.

The teachers here in America have some specific goals for their classroom activities. They take the responsibilities of the students education honestly. They set the students to do moral and social activities. They are also aware of their students physical and mental health. In their well-furnished schools they have all arrangements of sports and taking physical exercise in the well-decorated playground and gymnasiam. In my school, I will try to follow all these practices.

Template for Action Research Proposal                        -------------------------------------                                                          Introduction

I teach in a high school in Bangladesh. The name of my school is Barmi Bazar High School. Ours is a big school of about 1000 students. So it has some very large classrooms and some large classes has more than 100 students. So there are some problems sometimes in my school and classes for classroom management and make the classes student-centered by creating a real classroom situstion. There are 6 to 10 grades students in my school. All students are not equal according to their merit, that is, the students are of different level in the same class.

Our school is situated in a rural area. It is about 15 kilometers from our upazila ( Police Station ) and about 45 kilometers from the city, Gazipur. So about all of the students of our school come from villages. Most of the students fathers are the only earning members of their families. Most of them are farmers. There are also some shopkeepers, fishermen, boatmen and also some day laborers. Many parents are poor and they can not provide their children with the necessary things likes books, clothes etc. and even they can not bear their educational expenses. But now-a-days, the Government has launched a program to help the poor students with financial facilities to save them from dropping out.

On the other hand, the parents of the village-students are not well- educated. Very few of them are educated, some of them are a little educated and some of them are not educated at all or they are illiterate. People of various community live in the villages. So the students of different community come to school. Most of the studentsare Muslims. About 15 to 20 percent of them are Hindus.

As most of the students' guardians are not educated, they are not aware of their children's education and they are not able to take care of their education and health. This is why the rate of education of the village is not good and it has an influenceon our school. If we compare the quality or the standard of education of our school with some other schools in the towns, our position will be very low. Besides, our school has not got modern facilities of technology and other useful teaching-aids. For that very reason, I have started the activities of some action research on "How Can The Quality of Education of My School Be Increased". My Action Research Questions are as follows:-

                           Action Research Questions                           -------------------------

Reflection on Fieldwork (Visiting Williamsburg Middle School)

Classroom  is a part and parcel of an educational institution. It is the place where students learn many things. So a classroom should be well decorated in order that students can feel comfortable and pleasure

to receive lessons from their teachers.

Conclusion: By the help of my trainer-teachers here I have written my portfolio according to their suggestion. I will keep it for my future development. I will try to apply the messages of this portfolio in my own school in my country.
