For the advanced group they will read 2 books and compare the characters in the two texts.
For the advanced group they will compare the protagonist and the an antagonist (for some texts it will be a thing or an idea)
Week 2
The teacher will introduce a persuasive piece of writing.
The class will be asked to listen for words and phrases that create the authors point-of-view.
The students will be asked to write a letter to the editor based on their own point-of-view with regard to a courageous person.
The project will be done in three steps.
1. As a brainstorming activity, the students will take notes as they talk with a partner about their courageous person.
2. They will add details and revise.
3. Lastly the students will edit and finalize their writing.
Week 3
1. Introduce adjectives using apple activity
2. Use web cluster graphic organizer to discuss adjectives to describe apples in small groups.
3. Read a couple of poems out of “Heroes and Sheroes”
4. Guided reading groups will continue to meet Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday
5. Introduce adjectives that describe people. Students will use their name to create a name poem of adjectives that describe themselves. Name poem will be in their journals.
6. Introduce diamante poem.
7. Students will create a diamante poem to describe a person that they know who is courageous.
8. Students will showcase poems by doing a final, finished copy.
Week 41. Begin writing process on story about a time they were courageous (Use actual word in story)
i. Brainstorm. Three different times they were courageous, have them choose one to write about
2. Teacher demonstrates how to make on outline using an example.
3. Guided Readinga. -Students not involved are working on their outlinesb. -Teacher can begin conferencing with students on their outlines, checking progress
4. Writing day. Take outline and begin forming it into a rough draft
5. Finish and edit/correct rough drafts6. Guided reading
a. -Editing conference with teacherb. -Other students working on editing. When finished, they can work on illustration for
story.7. Work on final draft; copy onto new paper and finish illustrations. When complete, have them fill
out student rubric.
