Celebrating 10 Years!

Meet Lori MangumLooking Back & Ahead

A staff member wearing a Gilda’s Club shirt was recently approached by a woman in Home Depot who hugged her and said, “Oh Gilda’s Club! You saved my life!” It is a sentiment we’ve heard many times and always reaffirms the mission and value of our work – the impact we make. The stories are as diverse as those who share them, but there is one that stands out – not because the person with cancer is very young and the cancer very rare, but because she is herself so rare – an always smiling woman who radiates positive energy regardless of her health, pain, rare complications, or even prognosis. Lori Mangum is a 33 year old woman who was diagnosed last year with a rare type of sarcoma – one with a name so long it is hard

to remember and even harder to pronounce. Her father, Dennis, shares the story of the family’s cancer journey with courage and eloquence

and, like the woman in Home Depot, he credits Gilda’s Club with having helped the family endure many months of the night-mare rollercoaster that defines so many cancer journeys. The news for the Mangum family was just like a bad onion that kept appearing more rotten as each layer was revealed. What everyone thought was a cyst that would be simple and quick to remove turned out to be a very large series of cancerous growths deep beneath the surface that required much of Lori’s scalp to be removed. Grafts, complications and reconstruction steps left Lori appearing as a self-described alien, but they were all part of the path to healing.

Despite the horror if it all, Lori was always able to find humor and hope. She knew staying positive was critical to successful healing and living life fully while cancer was a part of it. She found Gilda’s Club and encouraged her parents to join her. Reluctant at first (and assuming there must be hidden costs they might not be able to afford), Dennis and Katy did join Lori, and they are all grateful for that decision. They gathered hope and humor from their peers in support groups and provided it as well. Lori also attended the young adult network-ing group and the family attended social and healthy lifestyle events, too. Their participation became a lifeline. “Gilda’s was the one place that no one stared at me. From the very first moment I walked in the Clubhouse, I felt seen for who I was apart from the cancer and that was refreshing in a way I can’t begin to describe.” Now, nearly a year since her diag-nosis, Lori is cancer-free and is just as beautiful on the outside as she

was before cancer entered her life. Possibly she is even more beautiful on the inside.

Her story has inspired many at Gilda’s Club and continues to inspire us all to follow her example – to never let cancer defeat your spirit or prevent you from living life fully even when cancer is a part of it.

It’s hard to believe we have begun our 10th year! It’s hard to believe we have served more than 7100 people living with 55 different types of cancer over those first nine years. We’ve done it with the help of more than 2500 volunteers and we’ve built a volunteer program second to none – with volunteers currently saving us nearly $1000 a day!

Our growth in those first nine years (highlighted below) tells a story – a story that is woven from the cancer journeys of all the families who have come through our red doors and participated in this support community, sustaining each other with hope and encouragement, helpful knowledge and advice and the certainty that no one faces cancer alone. Not at Gilda’s Club. Since 2008 . . .

We were named non-profit of the year in 2014, after having won the BBB Torch Award and the Center for Non-Profit Excellence Pyramid Award. Some of our volunteers have been named Philanthropist of the Year and Youth Philanthropist of the Year (both locally and nationally). We have had two Bell Award winners, three most admired women, and many other community and national honors.

And yet we are far too young to rest on our laurels or assume we have reached the peak of excellence toward which we continually strive. The truth is, we risk losing some impact as we struggle with our growth and face a parking crisis. There are routinely nights when we have a need for 60+ parking spaces and we have only 24 (after having lost the lot across the street to the Phoenix Hill development). We have secured parking in several locations a few blocks away and have, thanks to generous funding from the Fred B. & Opal S. Woosley Foundation, the Irvin F. & Alice S. Etscorn Charitable Foundation and Kosair Charities, purchased a van to shuttle participants – many of whom are medically fragile. We have yet to see how well this will work, but we know it will present a new challenge as we near our 10th anniversary, a challenge we will face with the help of our supporters.

In the meantime, we will celebrate a decade of service and the absolute certainty that, together, we have made an immeasurable impact on thousands of lives.

Our namesake said it best. Sparkle, Gilda Radner’s Yorkshire Terrier, embodied the spirit and compan-ionship that helped Gilda during her illness until her death from cancer in 1989.

Did you know that Gilda’s Club Louisville has volunteers of the canine variety? In an homage to Gilda, we have many four-legged ambassadors who – with the help of their humans – represent us in the community by spreading happiness and a dog-like sense of wonder to those affected by cancer.

Mercy, a Lutheran Church Chari-ties K-9 Comfort Dog, visits with patients and families at the James Graham Brown Cancer Center monthly. She also makes a trip to the Clubhouse one Tuesday night each month to visit with our members prior to dinner and support groups.

As her bio on her very own Face-book page says, “A dog is a friend who brings a calming influence,

allowing people to open up their hearts and receive help for what is affecting them.” Mercy, a golden retriever, also came to visit with Camp Gilda campers last summer. Her presence changes the mood instantly – with everyone lighting up and gathering around to pet her.

Dogs have an innate ability to communicate with people on a level that humans can’t. When dogs are brought into hospitals and medical centers, they have been shown to help lower blood pressure, help people relax and lessen anxiety. Leading medical centers across the country have their own pet therapy programs. More than a dozen registered therapy dogs are part of Mayo Clinic’s Caring Canines program.

Gilda’s Club also has a partnership with another non-profit, volunteer organization based in Louisville – WAGS Pet Therapy of Kentucky, Inc. WAGS stands for Wonderful Animals Giving Support.

Three WAGS dogs represent Gilda’s Club each month at the James Graham Brown Cancer Center. Lily, Molly, and Zuzu (along with their humans Martha Raymer, Diane Atherton, and Donna Smith) don their Gilda’s Club doggie bandanas and hit the waiting rooms and infusion areas to spread joy and love, simply by being who they are. Lily will also staff a Gilda’s information table at an upcoming community fair at the VA Health Center.

No matter from where they hail, we absolutely love our therapy dogs. A Golden Retriever, two Great Pyrenes, a Goldendoodle and a Cavalier Spaniel, Mercy and the WAGS trio prove that therapy dogs come in all shapes, sizes and breeds.

The most important characteristic of a therapy dog is its temperament. A therapy dog must be friendly, patient, confident, gentle and at ease in all situations. If you have a trained therapy dog who might like to volunteer, come join us!

Since before we opened in 2007, the founders and our board of directors have been dedicated to collaboration, relying on community partners for everything from hosting meals to strategic consultation to financial support. We are so fortunate to have corporations, civic groups, schools and clubs play such an intricate role in our mission.

One long-lasting partnership differentiates our youth program as one of the best (if not the best) in the country. Currently, our youth account for roughly 28% of those we serve, compared with a 9% average among our national affiliates.

This success is directly attributed to the extraordinary partnership with Kosair Charities.

Kosair Charities has provided more than $1.5 million in financial support over the years – helping cover the more than $400,000 annual cost of our 18 monthly youth support groups, lock-ins, camps, art and music workshops, retreats, family social events and other youth program offerings.

As clowns, cooks, magicians, board members and more, for nearly 10 years, Kosair Charities staff and board members have served as volunteers. Consistently, when we have a need and we ask, they respond with help.

Finally, we have sought and received wise counsel from some of their incredible and knowledgeable staff and board members – about fund raising, our community’s resources, and keeping pace with tremendous growth.

Their rich history in Louisville of helping children in need since 1923 is unsurpassed. The impact they have made, immeasurable.

We are truly grateful to be one of more than 100 organi- zations that receive their generous support. Our youth count on it. Our families count on it.
