Who We Are

Imago Dei Middle School, established in 2005, serves boys and girls in the 5th through 8th grades from eligible families in Tucson. We are focused on

educating the whole child and breaking cycles of poverty.

Admission is based on qualification for the National School Lunch Program.

Imago Dei is committed to:

•Faith-based education nurturing respect for all faiths and traditions

•Graduate Support Program for all grades and alumni

•Strong partnerships with families and community

•Extended day, week and year with free meals

•Small classes (20 students or fewer)

•Tuition-free education

Our annual cost per child is approximately $15,000. We operate as a tuition-free school due to the economic limitations of students’ families; therefore, donor support is essential for the success of our mission.

It is both an honor and a privilege to serve as President of the Imago Dei Middle School Board of Directors. This, our 10th Anniversary, is an exciting time for all of us who care

about the school and its mission.

Our school makes a significant difference for our children and families, providing an education in a caring and supportive way to economically challenged members of our community.

We have wonderful founders, staff, teachers and a Board that believes strongly in what we do. We also have many dedicated supporters whose generosity allows us to provide a full scholarship for all our scholars. We look forward with confidence to the continued success and excellence of Imago Dei. - Kirt Gardner

This year Imago Dei Middle School celebrates ten years of providing a quality, private school education to children who are economically disadvantaged. Our families enter

into relationship with faculty and staff through Imago Dei to empower their children to realize their full potential. As a result, nearly all of our alumni (9 of 10) will graduate from high school and the vast majority (more than 85%) will pursue post-secondary education.

The impact of academic achievement cannot fully be measured by counting single acts of good work. Together we are opening minds and hearts, changing lives, strengthening families, deterring crime as an alternative means of support, preparing young people to build a well-educated workforce, and contributing positive leadership that will transform communities and impact our world for the good. Each child is the drop that creates ripples, and the butterfly that can be felt around the world.

I extend my sincere thanks and gratitude to all the people who have made Imago Dei possible. We thank our incredible faculty and staff, and our faithful volunteers, community partners, donors and Board of Directors for their investments in our children. May the next decade bring a permanent school home for Imago Dei, and the opportunity to invest even more.

Blessings, and thank you. - Anne Sawyer

I came to Imago Dei at the start of 7th grade. I spoke only a few words of English, so I was at a second-grade level in reading. My aunt and uncle, with whom I was living, looked into the bilingual program at TUSD, but there was a long waiting list. My cousin was already at Imago Dei, so rather than just sitting around waiting for a place to open up at Roskruge, we decided that should go to Imago Dei, too.

At first I felt lost and confused, surrounded by people speaking English, sure that everyone would think I was dumb. But several teachers spoke some Spanish, plus some kids who were bilingual translated for me. By the end of 7th grade I started to feel like I was fitting in and making progress.

I especially liked Mrs. Broome. I didn’t like her class at first, because English was really hard for me, but I liked her and the way she taught. She’d take the time to make sure you understood.

I got interested in architecture in high school because I saw an article about Dubai and read that 13% of the cranes in the world were there, putting up these tall, tall buildings. I wanted to be part of it.

While I’m waiting for financing for college to work out, I’m volunteering at the school and interning at Fors Architecture+Interiors, a Tucson design firm. Rev. Anne and Mr. Taylor helped set that up. It’s especially exciting because Fors’ current project is The Carriage House, right down the street from Imago Dei, where the spring fundraiser is going to be. I was just at a meeting where they were discussing materials for the renovation with the contractor. It’s really valuable experience for the work I want to do.

Imago Dei is an awesome school. I loved being here when I was a student, and I love being here now.

When we first came to Tucson, my older son, Danny, went to a charter school. He was there for

third and fourth grade. At that school the kids ran wild. He has always been a good student, very responsible and serious, but it was hard for him to learn there.

I heard about Imago Dei from a woman whose son played soccer with Danny, and she said that it was a very good school with many opportunities for the students. So we went to visit and we could see that the teachers take very good care of the kids.

Danny started in 5th grade, and Imago Dei became family to us. And we became family to them.

I worked in offices for nearly 30 years in Mexico, so to help at the school I volunteered to help with organizing paperwork.

Over the years, my English has improved, and a year and half ago, Rev. Anne offered me a job at the school. I could not believe it. I had been cleaning houses, transportation was difficult, and things were hard for us financially. I cannot tell you how great a thing the job at Imago Dei has been for me and for my boys.

One thing they do at school for the kids is always to ask them to think about what they like, what they’re good at, what they might want to do. They give them options. They’ve given me options, too. More. They’ve given me wings.

Other parents, they tell me they have a problem - for example, getting services for a child who goes to another school. I always say, “Have you talked to Peggy? Have you asked at the school for advice, for help? Well, you should. You belong to Imago Dei now!”

I came to Imago Dei from public school at the start of 5th grade, when I was 11. I graduated last spring. My three little sisters are still at

the school. We’re an Imago Dei family, I guess.I always liked it that the teachers were so

welcoming and willing to take that extra step to help us every day.

My favorite thing at the school were our Community Service projects. It was fun to get out into the city and do things as a group.

What surprised me most about high school is how easy it is after four years at Imago Dei. With those long days, you build stamina. The school prepares you mentally to pay attention and get the work done without being overwhelmed. I was able to test out of Pre-Algebra and my first finals just weren’t that hard.

The class I’m enjoying the most is French - it’s a new language for me and it’s sort of familiar because of Spanish, but with a twist. The differences and similarities are interesting.

I’m playing Freshman football at Salpointe and they’re starting up a rugby team, which I’m joining, too. I really like being part of a team, building friendships, and making a place for myself in school.

Next summer, I’m going to take geometry so I can go on to Algebra 2 next year. My plan is to keep playing sports, go to college, and become some type of engineer.

Ana recently wrote the following for Rev. Susan’s Religion class. The assignment was to reflect on the Beatitudes of Jesus:

In the darkest moment sometimes we turn dark choosing to worry about ourselves above others. It is the complete opposite of what we should be doing. One should help their neighbor poor or rich, wicked or kind. The dark can be a scary place when you’re on your own, but if you join together it won’t be as scary. If we work together we can get rid of poverty, war, pollution and hunger.

Together we can make the world such a beautiful one, once we get past color, race, culture, religion, etc. We can all be such great friends. I understand that not all can be friends but we must see and praise others for the good qualities and not focus on the bad ones.

We must all learn that land or objects are not important and it’s plain stupid to cause such great problems over them. We need to learn, understand, and stop ignoring that we are one, and every single

person you see outside on the streets begging for money, crying out for help, is your brother or sister, blood or no blood.

At the end, Ana added: P.S. Ms. Rev. Susan, at this point I started to feel bad and I wanted to just tell someone that I am so sorry for all the homeless people I could have helped. Now that it is winter I can’t imagine the struggles they go through to keep warm or even eat. I’m very sorry . . . .
