Mike Brey, a 17-year veter-an of the collegiate coachingranks, has been the catalystbehind the resurgence of theNotre Dame basketball pro-gram. Hired on July 14,2000, he has guided theIrish to an 85-44 record for a.659 winning percentageand postseason appearancesin each of his four seasons

— three NCAAs (2001-03) and one NIT (2004).Brey is the only coach in the program’s history tolead his teams consecutive 20-win campaigns andNCAA berths in each of his first three seasons. In2002-03, Notre Dame registered a 24-10 record enroute to the school’s first appearance in the NCAAtournament Sweet 16 since 1987 after advancing tothe second round in both 2001 and ’02. Under Brey, Notre Dame has become oneof the BIG EAST’s most consistent teams as theIrish have compiled a 40-24 (.625) in regular-seasoncontests, and along with Syracuse, is the only con-ference team to post a winning record each of thelast four years. In his first season at Notre Dame,Brey led the Irish to BIG EAST West Division titleafter registering an 11-5 conference mark, the mostwins since becoming a conference member sincethe 1995-96 season.
