A Grand Chancellor’s Vision. . .
“In me Behold Pythagoras. . . “with those words declared by either Rick Pascal or Howard Baker (it was over 20 years ago, so I can’t remember who played the part), I began my career as a member of the Knights of Pythias in Benjamin N. Cardozo Lodge. And if you were fortunate enough to go through the various ranks with either Rick or Howard and others like Danny Feigen in the North, or Rich Friedman and the late Frank Wells in the South, the meaning of the Knights of Pythias was really brought home to you.
To me, Friendship, Charity, and Benevolence became more than just words engraved on some medals or pieces of paper. Working on the Cystic Fibrosis Campaign or raising money for Deborah Hospital; running the Hand of Friendship Day and the Annual Circus, all of these worthwhile causes began with those words; “In me Behold Pythagoras. . .”
The lessons imparted in each of the three ranks of Pythian Knighthood were those which were and are designed to build a bond of brotherhood that would stand the test of time. But what is also a critical component in our Brotherhood is the necessary “critical mass” that is needed to sustain our membership. That is to say, without enough members to carry our message forward we will be unlikely to practice the acts of friendship, charity and benevolence in the numbers that are the hallmark of our order. Oh, many among us will still have friends. And some of us will surely work at charitable endeavors and some among

us may even engage in acts of kindness and benevolence. But without a continuing growth in our membership, we will surely witness the end of the Pythian Order and what made the Knight of Pythias such a significant asset to American society.
But on a brighter note, I am happy to record that Benjamin N. Cardozo Lodge, with the help of brothers from around the State took in 10 new Knights and 2 Esquires , and two other initiates are still pending. Plans are being undertaken to bring these men and others into the order in the most expeditious manner. With the assistance of Brothers like Sir Steve Pardes and Matt Silverman the Grand Lodge is supporting an effort to create a viable Rank Team that will provide a meaningful ritual experience for both initiates and Brothers in the Domain of New Jersey. And on a more modest note, Battleground Lodge also brought in several new brothers during this cycle. Additionally, with the active encouragement of Grand Vice Chancellor Allen Haller, Jersey Shore, Battleground Centennial, and Fortitude will hold a second Membership Breakfast which will leverage what was learned from the last such event with the expectation of greater success this year.
Finally, an effort will be made to create a viable partnership with Deborah Hospital, intended to support the aims of both organizations in terms of fundraising and membership. The logic of increasing our membership which would provide more volunteers to raise funds for Deborah is inescapable. Deborah can provide the venue while we provide the manpower.
This then is my initial Action Plan, and I urge all my brothers in the Domain of New Jersey to support
it. There are countless ways to get behind this plan when it is fully implemented, but the benefits will all be yours. If you have any additional ideas please bring them to the attention of your Chancellor Commanders. No one has a monopoly on ideas. And sometimes, good ideas germinate in the most unlikely of places.
Yours in F, C & B
Sir Barry Winston, Grand Chancellor
IN MEMORIAM
On November 22, 2016, PGC Sir William Hausler passed away. He was ninety-three years old and
had been a member of Battleground Lodge since Cranford Linden Lodge disbanded. He was a Past
Grand Chancellor and Knight of the Golden Spur and was a Pythian for many years. He is survived
by his wife, Sebley, and his children Dale and Richard, their spouses and five grandchildren. He
will be missed and remembered by many of us.

Here’s a little puzzle that should be easy for Pythians. All of the answers are either related to
Pythianism or can be seen when you look around your Castle Hall. So get out your pencils (or pens if
you’re feeling confident) and see how long it takes you to get them all. Answers are on last page . . .
No peeking !!!
