Henry County Represented as Stellar Finalist

When the Office of Community and Rural Affairs (OCRA) announced its Stellar Communities Program finalists, that list of four included “Safe and Welcome.” This region, comprised of Knightstown, New Castle, and Henry County, had emphasis on enhancing the community’s safe and welcome environment.

With comprehensive plans for the City, County and Knightstown, the Stellar committee attempted to land major grant funding. Cathy Hamilton led the community-wide effort, which included proposed projects ranging from sidewalks and signage, to the Henry County Expo Center and Knightstown Library upgrade.

Although Henry County didn’t receive the Stellar designation, OCRA did provide funding and tools for strategic plans moving forward.

Plans for New Shell Building Emerging

The shell building, completed in 2013, had one purpose: to attract business expansion inquiries for New Castle and Henry County. Boar's Head purchased the building in 2019 and is investing $23M and will create 50 new jobs for a new food processing facility.

The EDC is pursuing plans for the construction of another shell building, with approximately 15 sites under consideration. FPBH Engineers are assisting with a site selection process and are providing an objective ranking of the sites. They will be taking into account the quality, utility, and location.

  • The future of machine trades arrived in the Machine Trades class at the New Castle Career Center in the form of a new Haas Mini Mill. The mill uses computer numerical control (CNC) technology to create precise parts. The technology is already in use by several employers in the area. “For this generation of machinists, this is what their future is going to be,” said Greg Dickerson of New Castle Career Center’s Machine Trades program. “CNC technology is widely used by local manufacturers.”

Signing day is usually associated with an athlete signing a letter of intent to continue their athletic career at a four-year university. The Machine Trades Program at New Castle Career Center recognizes that there are other opportunities awaiting students after graduation and want to celebrate with a different kind of signing day. Students at this signing day are entering the workforce and signing up with an employer who is eager to have them implement what they’ve learned at the Career Center.

Find Your Fit: Machine Trades Program Hosts Career Signing Day

EDC transformation team set for action Members of the Spiceland Town Council have joined a team of transformers – not the robotic figures on the big screen but a group heroic in its own right, one that helps transform troubled properties into new business opportunities.

After hearing a presentation from Penny York, the New Castle-Henry County Economic Development Corp’s director of special projects, council members enthusiastically authorized their president, Darrin Jacobs, to sign documents making Spiceland a community partner in a new effort to seek Environmental Protection Agency brownfield assessment grant funding. That funding helps assess properties where contamination may have occurred, a first step in mak-ing them marketable again.
