and to work under conditionsthat had not been experienced before.

We who have taken up the task of the first Sisters of St Joseph

must press on into each age as it unfoldsin a like spirit of daring,

strong in our commitment to love.

Drawing on the past, we will never take refuge in the past,

but together, in partnership with the Holy Spirit,we will confront the world of the future fearlessly

to bend that future to the dynamic purpose of the Creator.’

Introductory Rites Entrance Hymn: City of God Dan Schutte

1. Awake from your slumber! Arise from your sleep! A new day is dawning for all those who weep. The people in darkness have seen a great light. The Lord of our longing has conquered the night. REFRAIN: Let us build the city of God. May our tears be turned into dancing! For the Lord, our light and our love, Has turned the night into day! 2. We are sons of the morning: we are daughters of day. The one who has loved us has brightened our way. The Lord of all kindness has called us to be A light to his people to set their hearts free. 3. God is light: in him there is no darkness. Let us walk in his light, his children, one and all. O comfort my people; make gentle your words. Proclaim to my city the day of her birth. 4. O City of Gladness, now lift up your voice! Proclaim the good tidings that all may rejoice!

Blessing of Water:

SPRINKLING RITE: Water from Goulburn carried by Sister Kerrie Cusack and from the Mary MacKillop Well at North Sydney, carried by Sister Anne Derwin, will be poured into a common bowl, blessed and sprinkled on the Congregation as a reminder of our Baptismal commitment.

Sisters Marion Gambin (SA), Jill Dance (Tas), Josephine Dubiel (Vic), Catherine Shelton (NZ)

In the closer connections in more recent years with the Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart we have found a similar closeness of spirit and approach to mission. Today, inspired by our charism to be one with the poor, our mission is expressed through lives characterised by simplicity, poverty, humility, compassion, hospitality and joy. We remain open to present and emerging needs in the Church and society through our witness to the presence of God in our time, and proclaiming the message and values of the Gospel in the everyday circumstances of our lives. In the spirit of Julian Tenison Woods and St Mary of the Cross MacKillop, ministries we undertake are ones which further the Reign of God, serve the poor, support the rights of the oppressed and marginalised and are consistent with emerging needs in the local Church. In keeping with our tradition, we have a particular concern for people in rural communities.

Mass Setting: Mass of St Francis - Paul Taylor. Used with permission

The Goulburn Congregation’s work has been carried out, for the most part, in smaller isolated towns and has provided these areas with a flexible group of religious women ideally suited for rural outback towns, being as they were, prepared to live and work in groups of two or three, in remote areas often with-out a resident priest, and thus with limited opportunities for Mass and the sacraments. In 1917, the Diocese of Wagga Wagga was established out of the south west portion of the Diocese of Goulburn. The Sisters’ houses in Tumbarumba, Narrandera, Holbrook, Coolamon and Leeton would be in the new diocese, and under the arrangements for Diocesan Institutes, would then form a new Institute. This prospect was not welcomed by the Sisters, and the Bishops of the time, Barry of Goulburn and Dwyer of Wagga Wagga, stating they did not wish to see the ‘further fragmentation of the Order’ supported the application of the Congregation for Papal Approbation, so that the houses of the Congregation in any diocese would remain under the governance of the Mother House in Goulburn. The application to Rome for Papal Approbation was initiated in 1932, and in April 1935, the Congregation received its Decree of Praise approving the Constitutions of the Institute for a period of seven years. After interruptions during war time, and other delays, the Constitutions received definitive approval by the Sacred Congregation for Religious on 6th October, 1963. Currently, Sisters of the Congregation live in 21 Houses situated in the Archdiocese of Canberra and Goulburn, the Archdiocese of Sydney and the Diocese of Wagga Wagga. The women who have been counted as members of the Sisters of St Joseph of Goulburn number 313. Currently the Congregation has 52 members, with an average age of 77. When, in the 1960s, following the directive of the Second Vatican Council, discussions began about forming a Federation among the five Josephite Congregations that were formed in the 1880s from Queen Charlotte’s Vale/Perthville, a remarkably similar spirit among the Congregations was found. The Australian New Zealand Federation of the Sisters of St Joseph was formed in 1967.

HISTORY:

The Sisters of St Joseph of Goulburn, an Australian Religious Institute of Pontifical Right, trace their origins to the Congregation of Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart founded in Penola, South Australia in 1866 by Father Julian Tenison Woods and Saint Mary of the Cross MacKillop.

In 1872, at the invitation of Bishop Matthew Quinn of the Bathurst Diocese, four Sisters of St Joseph left Adelaide to found a community at Queen Charlotte’s Vale (The Vale, later Perthville). In 1875/76 the communities of Sisters of St Joseph in Bathurst Diocese were formed by the Bishop into a Diocesan Institute.

Being aware from 1872 on, of the work of the Sisters of St Joseph in Bathurst Diocese, Bishop William Lanigan of the Goulburn Diocese set about organising the establishment of his own Josephite Congregation. In 1880 he sent five young women recruited from Ireland to be trained by the Sisters of St Joseph in Perthville, and in 1882, brought the Sisters to Goulburn to establish a Diocesan Institute in his diocese. Like Sisters of St Joseph elsewhere, the mission of these first Sisters was to bring God’s saving love to the poor in the isolated rural areas of the vast Goulburn Diocese. They did this primarily through the establishment of schools and the support of the faith of families living in these areas.

Soon after the foundation of the Congregation, the Sisters began establishing branch houses. The opening of new Convents over short periods of time shows the years of rapid growth:

I invite you, Sisters, to accept now these Constitutions as your way of consecrated life. May the Constitutions inspire, encourage and strengthen you in your Josephite life as you continue to share in the Mission of Jesus, and live generously with the spirit of Saint Mary of the Cross MacKillop and Father Julian Tenison Woods. Sister Anne Derwin invites all Goulburn Sisters to stand and pray together:

Loving God, we pray in thanksgiving for the gift of this moment. You have heard our deep desire for unity. May this step we take today be for all a sign of reconciliation and hope. May it deepen our commitment to you, as we continue to respond, with all Sisters of St Joseph to the needs of your poor, and work for justice and peace in our world, true to the example of our co-founders, St Mary of the Cross MacKillop and Father Julian Tenison Woods.

SISTER ANNE DERWIN:

Sisters, receive the Constitutions of the Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart. You have generously lived your religious life according to the way of life described in A Future and a Hope, the Constitutions of the Australian–New Zealand Federation of the Sisters of St Joseph. That same spirit, mission and charism are described in the Constitutions of the Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart. May these Constitutions come alive in you as ‘women who work in simple ordinary ways to bring to those who are poor the message of their human dignity.’ (Constitutions n. 4)

Sister Kerrie Cusack accepts the Book of Constitutions, on behalf of the Sisters.

GOULBURN SISTERS:

We accept these Constitutions as our way of vowed life as Sisters of St Joseph and pray that with God’s help we will continue to live faithfully in the spirit of our co-founders, Saint Mary of the Cross MacKillop and Father Julian Tenison Woods.

FEAST OF SAINT JOSEPH

19th March 2013

‘We were founded with vision and courageprecisely to undertake a new experimentto live as religious had not lived before,

and to work under conditionsthat had not been experienced before.

The first Sisters of St Joseph sensed the spirit of a new world

in a way that has left its mark on the history of Australia and New Zealand.
